It was aimed to describe some population charactersitics of Salmo trutta macrostigma from Fırnız Stream of the River Ceyhan. The age, growth, length-weight relationship and diet composition were investigated from May 2000 to February 2001. The ratio of male to female of 197 brown trout caught by electroshocker was 0.67:1.00 and their fork lengths varied from 8.0 to 48.5 cm and the majority of them were in the 11.0-17.0 cm length group. Total weights varied from 7.4 to 1441.0 g and age distribution ranged between 0 and 9. The length-weight relationships were estimated as W = 0.0149*FL^{3.009} (r = 0.994) …

This paper investigates the effects of gangrenous mastitis seen with cell necrosis and tissue damage on the activity of erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), level of plasma lipid peroxidation (MDA), and some biochemical parameters. To do that, 20 clinically gangrenous mastitis diagnosed and 20 healthy ewes, all from the same flock in a local ewes unit were used as material. In the present study cloning of the NP gene in a cloning vector is reported. For this purpose, Vero cells were infected with rinderpest RBOK vaccine strain. Total RNA was obtained from the infected cells and reverse-transcription (RT) was performed to get cDNAs of NP gene. Afterwards, the NP gene was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with the primers specific to the NP gene. The NP gene, 1575 bp in length, was cloned into pGEM-3Zf (-) cloning vector. PCR screening and enzyme digestion assays carried out to verify the presence of the NP gene.

Non-Linear Models For Growth Curves In Large White Turkeys, Turgay Şengül, Selahatti̇n Ki̇raz

The present work aimed to model the growth curves of male and female turkeys with respect to their live weight-age relationships and to determine a non-linear model explaining their growth curve better. For this purpose four different non-linear models were used to define growth curves of turkeys, namely Gompertz, Logistic, Morgan-Mercer-Flodin (MMF), and Richards. The coefficients of determination for these models were 0.9975, 0.9937, 0.9993, and 0.9966 for females and 0.9974, 0.9933, 0.9993, and 0.9969 for males, respectively. Considering model selection criteria, Gompertz, Logistic and Richards models seen to be suitable models for explaining Large White turkey growth.

The Acute Toxicity Of Ammonia On Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus L.) Larvae And Fingerlings, Aysel Çağlan Karasu Benli̇, Gülten Köksal

The aim of the present study was to determine median lethal concentrations (LC 50) of unionised ammonia (NH_{3}) for the larvae and fingerlings of Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L. 1758). The mean 48 h LC50 values were determined as 1.009 ± 0.02 mg/l for larvae and 7.40 ± 0.01 mg/l for the fingerlings. Larvae exposed to different concentrations of ammonia moved very rapidly, lost equilibrium in water and showed sideways swimming. Phenotypic Correlations Among Some Traits In Chinchilla Lanigera Produced In Turkey, Öznur Poyraz, Zehra Bozkurt, Esi̇n Ebru Onbaşilar

The aim of this study was to investigate the phenotypic correlations among some morphological and pelt traits in Chinchilla lanigera. Male chinchillas aged 9-12 months were used. The average body weight at pelting was 466.22 g, the body length was 23.66 cm, the head length was 8.76 cm, chest circumference was 17.65 cm and the pelt length was 32.39 cm. The phenotypic correlation coefficients between the body weight and the chest circumference, the ear length, the ear width and the tail length were 0.180, 0.294, 0.361 and 0.233, respectively (P < 0.01). The correlation coefficients between the body weight and pelt length and head length were found to be 0.160 and 0.150, respectively (P < 0.05). The correlation coefficients between the pelt length and body length, head length, ear length, fur hair lengths of back of neck, back and rump were found as 0.896, 0.615, 0.365, 0.212, 0.307 and 0.296, respectively (P < 0.01). In conclusion, performing selection using some morphological characteristics correlated highly with some pelt traits could contribute to improved fur quality for the production or breeding of chinchillas.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether vitamin E (VitE) and selenium (Se) or VitE plus Se have any the protective and/or augmented effects on cypermethrin (CYP)-induced oxidative stress in liver, brain, kidney and blood in rats. The feeding habits and diet composition of the stream dwelling resident brown trout Salmo trutta in the upper streams of River Ceyhan and River Euphrates were investigated by examining the stomach contents of 611 specimens collected from May 2000 to April 2001. Analysis of monthly variations of stomach fullness indicated that feeding intensity was higher between February and June than that for the spawning season that covered the period from November to January. Different bony structures as scales, vertebrae, otoliths, opercles and subopercles of 156 red mullet (Mullus barbatus ponticus Essipov, 1927) sampled from the Black Sea were removed for age determination. Otoliths were read once by two experienced readers. However, due to the difficulty of interpretation of annuli on the otolith edge, the broken-burnt method was applied to the 61 otoliths. Broken-burnt otoliths were also read once by the same two experienced readers. The present study describes clinical, virological, histopathological, immunohistochemical and electron microscopic findings of pox infection encountered in a quail flock. Lesions consisted of single or multiple nodules with a crust in variable size of gray to yellow or dark brown discoloration on the comb, eyelids, and the other poorly feathered areas of the body. Histopathological changes consisted of hyperplastic epithelium overlying, with ballooning degeneration of keratinocytes, many of which had eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies (Bollinger bodies), and heterophilic infiltrations admixed with mononuclear cells extending into dermis. In this study, a total of 30 Escherichia coli isolates obtained from milk samples of dairy cows suffering from subclinical mastitis in Konya, Turkey were typed according to plasmids and protein patterns. Agarose gel electrophoresis and sodium doedecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) methods were used to identify plasmids and whole-cell protein profiles. Of these two methods, SDS-PAGE typing proved to be more discriminate for typing the isolates.

Two burial chambers dating back to 1000 BC have been brought to light in the Van-Yoncatepe necropolis in Eastern Anatolia. In these two chambers (M5 and M6), plenty of skeletal remains belonging to dogs buried together with humans were discovered. The finds were a dog skeleton lying in-situ in burial chamber M5 and a number of bones scattered in three layers in burial chamber M6. This study was carried out in order to determine the effects of honeybee genotype and season on the acceptance rates of the larvae and royal jelly production. The cell builder colonies were prepared from the Caucasian (A. m. caucasica), Carniolan (A. m. carnica) and Mugla (A. m. anatoliaca) bees. Prediction Of Dry Matter Intake And Dry Matter Digestibilities Of Some Forages Using The Gas Production Technique In Sheep, Adem Kamalak, Önder Canbolat, Yavuz Gürbüz, Osman Ozay

Wheat straw, barley straw, alfalfa hay, alfalfa silage and maize silage were offered ad libitum to three male sheep, and daily dry matter intake (DMI) and apparent dry matter digestibility (DMD) were measured. Samples of forages were incubated with rumen fluid to determine gas production. Gas productions were measured at 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96, and gas production constants (a, b, c,) were described using the equation y = a + b (1 - e-^{ct}). Gas production at all incubation times and gas production constants (c, b and a+b) were significantly (P < 0.001) correlated to DMD or DMI. Although the gas production constant c explained 74% of the variation of DMD, the gas production constant b explained 92% of the variation of DMD. The gas production constants c and (a+b) in combination explained 96% of the variation of DMD. The gas production constants b and c alone explained 70% and 78% of the variation of DMI respectively. The gas production constants in combination explained 84-90% of the variation of DMI. It was concluded that the accuracy of predicting DMD or DMI can be increased when gas production constants are used in combination, and the in vitro gas production technique has good potentiality to predict DMD and DMI.

Toxoplasmosis is a common problem, accounting for significant morbidity in developing countries. Conventional treatments are associated with frequent relapses and with additional problems including undesirable side effects. Better-tolerated and more effective drugs are clearly needed. The aim of this study is to evaluate the in vitro efficacy of azithromycin and roxithromycin against Toxoplasma gondii using acridine orange in the fluorescence microscopic assay. It was found that azithromycin and roxithromycin had significant microbicidal activity (P < 0.05). In conclusion, this observation should be assessed carefully in future clinical trials involving a large number of cases with toxoplasmosis.

In this study, normal fundoscopic variations and genetic retinal diseases of Turkish sheepdogs (Akbash and Kangal) have been assessed. According to comparative results obtained from 35 Akbash and 35 Kangal dogs, it was determined that blue tapetal regions were present at a rate of 65% in the Akbash breed and yellow-green tapetal regions were present at a rate of 60% in the Kangal breed. No fundoscopic or clinical sign suggesting albunism, subalbunism or progressive retinal atrophy was observed in either group. A case of dicephalus, Arnold-Chiari malformation, spinal dysraphism and other associated defects was described in a newborn Holstein calf. The heads were medially and caudally joined with temporal bones and one common flattened occipital bone respectively. Cranial cavities became narrow dorsoventrally and included elongation of the compressed brains, and caudal displacement and hypoplasia of cerebelli. In the spinal column, variable degrees of dysraphism such as cervico-thoracal diplomyelia with hydromyelia and syringomyelia, lumbar spina bifida with spinal cord agenesis in the region were observed. The calf had also arthrogryposis of hind limbs and cleft palate of both heads.

The objective of the present study was to describe some reproductive parameters, hormonal levels and some biochemical properties of blood serum in rams under the Afyonkarahisar province conditions. Semen (via an artificial vagina) and blood were collected five times during the breeding season from a total of 10 mature and healthy fat-tailed rams (Akkaraman and Awassi) in Afyonkarahisar. Breed effects were significant for relative testes volume, sperm concentration, percentage of abnormal spermatozoa, triiodothyronine (T_{3}), albumin/globulin ratio, total lipid (P < 0.05) and cholesterol (P < 0.01). Some reproductive parameters and biochemical properties of Akkaraman and İvesi rams indicated that the values were recorded in the optimum range during the breeding season under Afyonkarahisar conditions. In addition, some reproductive parameters of rams show a correlation with some biochemical and enzymatic properties.

The aim of the study is to determine the effects of aflatoxin and sodium bentonite given alone and in combination on some of blood electrolyte levels in broiler chicks. For this aim, 72 male one-day-old Avian broiler chicks were used. The animals were separated into 6 groups, as one control (Group 1) and the others trial (Groups 2 to 6). The common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) is known as one of the economically important species in the classis Cephalopoda. In this study, from October 2000 to April 2002, 674 cuttlefish were collected monthly from the surroundings of Homa lagoon (in the Aegean Sea). In order to determine reproductive behaviors and spawning season of S. officinalis species, the gonad stages of both sexes and the seasonal gonadosomatic index values were determined. It was observed that the spawning period of S. officinalis covers the whole year with two maximum peaks in March and June.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of thermophilic Campylobacter species in broiler chicken faecal samples and on their carcasses. The possible routes of carcass contamination were assessed from slaughterhouse to market. Furthermore, the study aimed to determine the antibiotic susceptibility of Campylobacter isolates from broilers. Thermophilic Campylobacter spp. was isolated from 393 (91.8%) of 428 samples examined. European eels (Anguilla anguilla), collected from the Ceyhan River (Adana, Turkey) in 2002, were examined in terms of the presence of swimbladder nematoda. The existence of infection with Anguillicola crassus, a pathogenic swimbladder parasite, was identified in 50 out of 64 specimens. The total number of parasites, prevalence (%), parasite abundance and mean intensity of parasite values of July and November samples were 93, 82.86%, 2-7, 3.31 ± 1.32 and 56, 72.41%, 1-5, 3.20 ± 1.30, respectively. There was no significant histopathological destruction in the internal organs of the infected eels.

The age, growth and condition factors were described for Capoeta capoeta angorae from the upper parts of the River Ceyhan from May 2000 to February 2001 and the differences in length in the same age group between streams and reservoirs populations were compared. A total of 629 C. c. angorae were examined and the ratio of males to females was estimated as 1.25:1.00. The aim of this study was to detect some anabolic (zeranol, trenbolone, diethylstilbestrol, clenbuterol) residues in meat and meat products marketed in Istanbul. In the study, a total of 60 samples (30 fresh meat and 30 meat products) were obtained from different markets and used as test materials. The present study was conducted to determine prevalence of Haemobartonella felis in Van cats. 121 Van cats (82 female, 39 male, aged 1-9 years) were the materials of the study. To determine biochemical and haematological parameters, 2 ml blood with and without anticoagulant were taken according to technique from vena cephalica antebrachii.
