A case of dicephalus, Arnold-Chiari malformation, spinal dysraphism and other associated defects was described in a newborn Holstein calf. The heads were medially and caudally joined with temporal bones and one common flattened occipital bone respectively. Cranial cavities became narrow dorsoventrally and included elongation of the compressed brains, and caudal displacement and hypoplasia of cerebelli. In the spinal column, variable degrees of dysraphism such as cervico-thoracal diplomyelia with hydromyelia and syringomyelia, lumbar spina bifida with spinal cord agenesis in the region were observed. The calf had also arthrogryposis of hind limbs and cleft palate of both heads.

The major objectives of an efficient dairy farm operation include a successful lactation period, high milk yield relative to the feed costs, reproductive competence, and finally the returning of the cow to the body condition score (BCS) that existed before lactation so she will be prepared for another lactation. The regional distribution of endocrine cells was studied in the gastrointestinal tract of the freshwater turtle, Mauremys caspica caspica, by immunohistochemistry using antisera against serotonin, somatostatin, gastrin, insulin, substance P, glucagon and calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP). The immunoreactive cells were located in the gastric glands of stomach regions and in the intestinal epithelium with variable frequencies. Most of the immunoreactive cells in the intestine were spherical or spindle-like in shape (open-type cells), while round cells (closed-type cells) were occasionally found in the stomach. This study aimed to determine the chemical composition and mineral contents of Awassi ewes’ milk during lactation. Morning milks of 150 Awassi ewes were taken once a week during 18 weeks of lactation. Mean values obtained from analyses of the ewes’ milk samples were 17.54% ± 1.35 for dry matter; 6.61% ± 1.33 for fat; 10.93% ± 0.44 for non-fat dry matter; 5.68% ± 0.48 for protein; 4.34% ± 0.27 for lactose and 99.05 ± 11.63 kcal/100 g for energy value; 0.149% ± 0.008 for titratable acidity; 6.72 ± 0.42 for pH; and 1.0334 ± 0.001 g/cm^3 for specific gravity. …

Some Reproductive Parameters And Biochemical Properties In Akkaraman And Awassi Rams, Mustafa Gündoğan, Mustafa Serteser

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The objective of the present study was to describe some reproductive parameters, hormonal levels and some biochemical properties of blood serum in rams under the Afyonkarahisar province conditions. Semen (via an artificial vagina) and blood were collected five times during the breeding season from a total of 10 mature and healthy fat-tailed rams (Akkaraman and Awassi) in Afyonkarahisar. Breed effects were significant for relative testes volume, sperm concentration, percentage of abnormal spermatozoa, triiodothyronine (T_{3}), albumin/globulin ratio, total lipid (P < 0.05) and cholesterol (P < 0.01). Some reproductive parameters and biochemical properties of Akkaraman and İvesi rams indicated that the values were recorded in the optimum range during the breeding season under Afyonkarahisar conditions. In addition, some reproductive parameters of rams show a correlation with some biochemical and enzymatic properties.

The aim of the study is to determine the effects of aflatoxin and sodium bentonite given alone and in combination on some of blood electrolyte levels in broiler chicks. For this aim, 72 male one-day-old Avian broiler chicks were used. The animals were separated into 6 groups, as one control (Group 1) and the others trial (Groups 2 to 6). The age, growth and condition factors were described for Capoeta capoeta angorae from the upper parts of the River Ceyhan from May 2000 to February 2001 and the differences in length in the same age group between streams and reservoirs populations were compared. A total of 629 C. c. angorae were examined and the ratio of males to females was estimated as 1.25:1.00. Eleven age groups were recorded from 0+ to 10+ years old and two- and three-year-old fish dominated the sample. The ultrastructure of the ovarian follicle and the levels of the ovarian 11-dehydrocorticosterone (11-DHC), estradiol-17\beta (E_{2}), 17\alpha-hydroxyprogesterone (17\alpha-OHP), and progesterone (P) were studied during cortical alveoli, vitellogenesis and oocyte maturation in Chalcalburnus tarichi. The microvilli began to form on the oocyte surface during cortical alveoli phase and during vitellogenesis, came into contact in the pore canals of the zona radiata with microvilli formed from granulosa cells. While the special thecal cells posses specific organelles, which are characteristic of steroid-producing cells, namely, mitochondria with tubular cristae, smooth endoplasmic reticulum and lipid droplets, the granulosa cells contain organelles typical for protein-secreting cells. …

Temperature and relative humidity (RH) as well as airflow and broiler physiology directly affect heat production in broiler houses. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a chemical carcinogen, Diethylnitrosamine (DENA), on these markers, sialic acid (SA), lipid-bound sialic acid (LBSA) and the liver enzymes aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and gamma-glutamyltransferase. Brown adipose tissue (BAT) has a thermogenic function in animals. Mitochondrial uncoupling protein (UCP) is responsible for the thermogenic function in BAT cells. Vitamin A affects proliferation and differentiation in cells. Retinoic acid, a derivative of vitamin A, stimulates the expression of the UCP gene, which is found in BAT cells. The common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) is known as one of the economically important species in the classis Cephalopoda. In this study, from October 2000 to April 2002, 674 cuttlefish were collected monthly from the surroundings of Homa lagoon (in the Aegean Sea). In order to determine reproductive behaviors and spawning season of S. officinalis species, the gonad stages of both sexes and the seasonal gonadosomatic index values were determined. It was observed that the spawning period of S. officinalis covers the whole year with two maximum peaks in March and June.

The present study was conducted to determine prevalence of Haemobartonella felis in Van cats. 121 Van cats (82 female, 39 male, aged 1-9 years) were the materials of the study. Clinical, radiographical, blood gas and blood biochemical evaluations were examined in the preoperative period. Microfilariae were determined in 6 cases with a modified Knott test. In this study heart sizes were compared with thoracic vertebrae in 120 clinically normal Turkish shepherd dogs (42 female) without thoracic radiographic abnormalities. It was aimed to determine the heart sizes of Turkish shepherd dogs according the vertebral heart size (VHS). Lateral radiographs were obtained. The early life history of common dentex (Dentex dentex L. 1758) was investigated under culture conditions. The percentage of fertilized buoyant eggs was generally high, between 80 and 85%. Egg diameters ranged from 0.938 to 1.089 mm. Larval development, growth, and some morphological changes were described from day 0 to day 32. Larvae were reared intensively in 6 m^3 tank under a constant photoperiod (24 h light), and fed initially on rotifers, followed by Artemia nauplii and Artemia metanauplii. The present study aimed to determine the relative catch efficiencies of two different fish traps in İskenderun Bay. Trap model A had an entrance supported by a hoop, whilst the entrance of model B was unsupported. Fieldwork was carried out in Pirinçlik-Madenli Bight (İskenderun Bay) between 15 July and 15 November 2001. Forty basket traps were set each day during the 124-day study period. Samples of sunflower meal, barley, wheat, oat, corn, wheat bran, grass hay, vetch hay, alfalfa hay and compound feeds were collected for evaluation. The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of thermophilic Campylobacter species in broiler chicken faecal samples and on their carcasses. The possible routes of carcass contamination were assessed from slaughterhouse to market. Furthermore, the study aimed to determine the antibiotic susceptibility of Campylobacter isolates from broilers. Thermophilic Campylobacter spp. was isolated from 393 (91.8%) of 428 samples examined. A total of 53 out of 57 rectal swab samples was positive for thermophilic Campylobacter spp. Thermophilic Campylobacter spp. were isolated from 93.6%, 92.9% and 91.3% of broiler carcass, faecal and caecal samples, respectively. In this study genetic and morphologic structure of the sea-bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, in Turkish coastal waters were studied. Total 120 individuals were sampled in equal numbers from the Black, Marmara, Aegean and North-eastern Mediterranean Seas. In genetic analyses, four-enzyme systems (G3PDH*, ME*, MDH*, PGI*) were assayed, representing 9 loci (G3PDH-1*, G3PDH-2*, MDH-1*, MDH-2*, MDH-3*, ME*, PGI-1*, PGI-2*, PGI-3*), 2 of which were polymorphic (G3PDH-2*, PGI-3*). Fisher's exact test revealed that there were no genetic differences between populations using 9 loci. Nei's genetic distance was 0.0001 between the Black Sea and Mediterranean samples. Evaluation Of The Photocopy Method For Counting Puntius Conchonius’S Eggs, Şehri̇ban Çek, Mahmut Ali̇ Gökçe

The photocopy technique was developed to count fish eggs. Fecundity of the rosy barb Puntius conchonius was determined by both actual counts and the photocopy method. Egg stripping and fertilisation were performed manually. After fertilisation, water-hardened eggs were photocopied. White circles were counted and recorded as viable eggs and dark dots counted as dead eggs. Egg numbers estimated by this technique were significantly correlated with those estimated by actual counting (r = 0.999; P < 0.05). The advantage of the photocopy method is that it is a relatively fast method without significant loss in accuracy and it is cheaper than the other currently used methods.

Sixty 1-day-old male Ross-PM3 broiler chickens were used in this study. The chickens were divided into 5 groups, including one control and 4 experimental. The aim of this study was to detect some anabolic (zeranol, trenbolone, diethylstilbestrol, clenbuterol) residues in meat and meat products marketed in Istanbul. In the study, a total of 60 samples (30 fresh meat and 30 meat products) were obtained from different markets and used as test materials. Occurrence Of The Swimbladder Parasite Anguillicola Crassus (Nematoda, Dracunculoidea) In European Eels (Anguilla Anguilla) In Ceyhan River, Turkey, Ercüment Genç, Aysel Şahan, Tülay Altun, İbrahi̇m Cengi̇zler, Erdal Nevşat

European eels (Anguilla anguilla), collected from the Ceyhan River (Adana, Turkey) in 2002, were examined in terms of the presence of swimbladder nematoda. The existence of infection with Anguillicola crassus, a pathogenic swimbladder parasite, was identified in 50 out of 64 specimens. The total number of parasites, prevalence (%), parasite abundance and mean intensity of parasite values of July and November samples were 93, 82.86%, 2-7, 3.31 ± 1.32 and 56, 72.41%, 1-5, 3.20 ± 1.30, respectively. There was no significant histopathological destruction in the internal organs of the infected eels.

In this study, 30 geriatric dogs of different breeds, ages, and sex (15 females, 15 males) with suspected heart diseases were evaluated. All dogs were examined clinically, radiographically, and ultrasonographically. Thoracic radiography revealed cardiomegaly in 5 cases, right atrial dilatation in 7 cases, right ventricular dilatation in 5 cases, left atrial dilatation in 1 case, and left ventricular dilatation in 2 cases. 2-D echocardiography permitted direct visualization of pericardial effusion in 4 cases, cardiac hypertrophy in 1 case, right atrial dilatation in 1 case, vegetative mass lesion in 1 case, and cardiomegaly in 2 cases. The aim of this study was the determination and comparative evaluation of the seroprevalence of Brucella canis infection in dog sera obtained from different dog shelters located in İstanbul and İzmir provinces by tube agglutination test (TAT), 2-mercapto-ethanol tube agglutination test (2ME-TAT) and ELISA. A total of 362 serum samples were obtained from 8 different dog shelters in İstanbul and İzmir provinces. The dogs were temporarily kept in these shelters. Three hundred eighty stray dogs (232 female and 148 male) from İstanbul and İzmir were tested with antigen detecting ELISA for Dirofilaria immitis infection. Blood samples were collected between November 2002 and April 2003. D. immitis infection was found in 4 dogs tested. Seroprevalence among these dogs in İstanbul was 1.52%. Seroprevalence was the highest (2.22%) in the 3-6-year-old age group, followed by 1.02% in the 1-3-year-old age group. However, there was no significant difference between these age groups (P > 0.05). No significant difference between male and female dog groups was observed in İstanbul (P > 0.05).
