The effect of various light sources and illumination intensities on the destruction of vitamin C was determined during the storage of pasteurized milk. For this purpose, raw cow's milk was pasteurized at 72 ^oC for 15 s, and then stored in 2 different refrigerators (4 ± 1^oC) illuminated by fluorescent and tungsten light (normal light) sources with intensities of 1100, 2400 and 5800 lux. Tinca tinca were exposed to lethal and sublethal treatments with mercury, cadmium and lead for acute and chronic periods to study alterations in immunological parameters. Acute lethal exposure (Lc_{50}/48 h ; 96-h Lc_{50} of Hg 1.0, Cd 6.5, Pb 300 ppm) caused a significant increase in Lct in the Hg treatment and a significant decrease in the Pb treatment, and a significant decrease in total WBC count in the Hg and Cd treatments. Growth And Feed Utilization In Juvenile Black Sea Turbot (Psetta Maeotica) Under Different Photoperiod Regimes, Ali̇ Türker, Murat Yi̇ği̇t, Sebahatti̇n Ergün

The effects of 4 different experimental photoperiod regimes, LDN (natural photoperiod), LD24:0 (24 h light:0 h dark), LD12:12 (12 h light:12 h dark) and LD0:24 (0 h light:24 h dark), on feed intake and growth parameters of juvenile turbot (21 ± 2.3 g) in the Black Sea were determined. Growth was highest in the group exposed to the continuous photoperiod (LD24:0), followed by the LD12:12, LDN and LD0:24 groups in descending order. Pseudolichus Solutocurtus Dubinin, 1956 (Acarina, Pterolichoidea) And Harpyrhynchus Sp. (Acarina, Harpyrhynchidae Dubinin, 1957) Species Recorded For The First Time On Wild Partridges In Turkey, Nursel Aksin, Zerri̇n Erdoğmuş

This study was performed to determine the presence of mite species on wild partridges in Elazığ district. For this purpose, a total of 68 partridges were caught in the 1996-2000 hunting seasons and inspected for the presence of mite species. At the end of the examinations 8 partridges were found to be infested by mites. Two different mite species were found on the infested partridges. These species were identified as Pseudolichus solutocurtus (Dubinin, 1956) and Harpyrhynchus sp. (Harpyrhynchidae Dubinin, 1957). In conclusion, 2 species of mites not reported before in the mite fauna of Turkey were found.

The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of antibodies to ALV-J in broilers and broiler breeders. For this, 5 broiler units and 1 broiler breeding unit in the Marmara region were visited. Seventy 4-6 -week-old chicks from the broiler units, consisting of 14 chicks from each broiler unit, were selected. Seventeen chickens from the broiler breeding unit were also selected. The chicks from the broiler units were necropsied and all internal organs were checked for the presence of tumors. The objectives of this study were to determine the chemical composition, digestibility, in situ N kinetics, and by-pass protein contents of 4 different common vetch varieties grown under irrigation. Four different common vetch varieties (Emir 20/1, Nilüfer 17/1, 28/1, and Uludağ 31/4) with different characteristics were selected. There was a massive outbreak of watery diarrhoea in kids aged 5 to 15 days in a goat herd in Gönen district of Isparta province in Turkey in May 2003. The presence of Cryptosporidium parvum was investigated in the faeces of 130 diarrhoeic kids and 3 dead kids in this herd. All of the faecal samples were also examined for rotavirus and coronavirus. C. parvum were detected in all of the faecal specimens. Coronavirus and rotavirus were not detected in any of the animals.

The aims of this study were the isolation of Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale from poultry and serotyping of the isolates and field sera by agar gel precipitation (AGP) test. For the isolation 257 chickens and 214 turkeys were used and for the AGP test 333 chickens and 250 turkeys were used. O. rhinotracheale was isolated from the sinus discharge of 3 broiler breeders at 37, 42 and 46 weeks of age. The faecal carriage rate of Listeria monocytogenes in stray dogs in Bursa province, Turkey, was determined from 82 faecal samples by bacteriological methods. L. monocytogenes was isolated from only one (1.22%) of the samples examined. The isolate was serotyped as 1/2b. It was concluded that stray dogs could be a reservoir of the organism as well as a source of human listeriosis in Turkey. This is the first report on the isolation of L. monocytogenes from a dog in this country.

Vaccine-associated feline sarcoma (VAFS) with multiple recurrences was diagnosed in the specimens at the injection site of a Turkish Van cat that had been vaccinated four months previously. The original tumor consisted of two compartments each 2.5 cm and 3.5 cm in diameter. It recurred five times following surgery and local recurrences necessitated five more radical resections within two years. Euthanasia was performed when pleural effusion developed, but evidence of metastatic disease was not observed. The SARS-Coronavirus (SARS-CoV) is the etiological agent of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The SARS-CoV spike (S) glycoprotein mediates membrane fusion events during virus entry and virus-induced cell-to-cell fusion. Investigations, described herein, have focused on the genetic manipulation of the SARS-CoV S glycoprotein in order to delineate functional domains within the protein. This was accomplished by incorporating single point mutations, cluster-to-lysine and cluster-to-alanine mutations, as well as carboxyl terminal truncations into the protein and investigating these mutants in transient expression experiments. Fearfulness reaction was examined using tonic immobility (TI) response and differential leucocyte counts as physiological indicators of distress from sire and dam brown layer lines. The study was performed on 20 male and 131 female chickens from the sire line and 24 male and 116 female chickens from the dam line. The duration of TI, the time interval until the bird righted itself, and the number of inductions (15 s periods of restraint) necessary to attain TI were recorded. Bioaccumulation of some heavy metals (Cd, Fe, Zn and Cu) in fresh parts of 2 bivalvia species (Pinctada radiata Leach, 1814 and Brachidontes pharaonis Fischer, 1870) was examined in samples collected between May, 1999, and April, 2000, in Akkuyu Bay (İçel, Turkey). The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Salmonella serogroups in chicken meat. A total of 315 skins from the wing part of chicken carcasses were collected from 8 chicken carcass retailers. Salmonella isolation was performed as described in the Bacteriological Analytical Manual of the Food and Drug Administration, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. The Effects Of Cadmium On Levels Of Glucose In Serum And Glycogen Reserves In The Liver And Muscle Tissues Of Cyprinus Carpio (L., 1758), Bedi̇i̇ Ci̇ci̇k, Kenan Engi̇n

The common carp (Cyprinus carpio L., 1758) was exposed to sublethal concentrations of cadmium (0.05, 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mgl^{-1}) for 10 days. The levels of serum glucose and glycogen reserves in the liver and muscle tissues were measured both in fish exposed and not exposed to Cd. The levels of glycogen reserves in the liver and muscle tissues were significantly (P < 0.05) decreased in fish exposed to sublethal concentrations of Cd compared with the levels measured in the control groups. The decrease in glycogen levels in the liver and muscle tissues under the highest metal concentration (1.0 mgl^{-1}) were 24% and 29%, respectively. The blood serum glucose levels of fish exposed to Cd were significantly (P < 0.05) increased compared with the levels measured in the control groups. This increase was correlated with the increase in water Cd concentrations.

Effects Of Heavy Metal Accumulation On The 96-H Lc_50 Values In Tench Tinca Tinca L., 1758, Syed Lal Shah, Ahmet Altindağ

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The effects of already accumulated heavy metals (Hg, Cd, Pb) in the body of tench on the 96-h LC_50 values of the respective heavy metals were studied. The body concentration of mercury, cadmium and lead was 0.011, 0.32 and 1.59 mg/g respectively, and their 96-h LC_50 values were 1.0, 6.5 and 300.0, ppm, respectively. The general accumulation order of heavy metals and their respective 96-h LC_50 values were Hg< Cd< Pb. It was observed that the fish with lowest body concentration of heavy metal showed the lowest 96-h LC_50 value of the respective heavy metal and vice versa. This close relationship showed that the previous body accumulation of heavy metals has a direct effect on the 96-h LC_50 values of the respective heavy metals and the susceptibility of fish.

The endocrine cells of gastrointestinal tract of the Oreochromis niloticus were investigated using immunohistochemical techniques. 8 antisera were tested and 3 immunoreactivities were detected: Serotonin, glucagon and somatostatin immunoreactive cells. Substance P, insulin, gastrin, calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) and calbindin immunoreactive cells were not found.

Small (57.56 ± 0.03 g) and large (172.46 ± 1.14 g) Nile tilapia fingerlings (Oreochromis niloticus) were stocked in six 0.15 ha partitioned aquaculture system (PAS) units on May 1 1997 at a rate of 100 kg/0.15 ha (low density) and 200 kg/0.15 ha (high density) in triplicate to determine the growth rates and production characteristics and the changes in fatty acid profiles of the fish. Selectivity studies are very important for sustainable fisheries. Therefore, in this study, selectivity parameters for the carp in Seyhan Dam Lake were estimated using gill nets having a mesh size of 28, 32, 40 and 45 mm. Gill nets used in pikeperch fishing of mesh size of 28, 30 and 32 mm could cause growth in the overfishing of carp. Therefore, it is recommended that longline fishing should be commonly used instead of gill nets on pikeperch fishing. Consequently gill nets having minimum 50 mm mesh size can be used for carp fishing in Seyhan Dam Lake.

In this study effects of alcohol and passive smoking on certain hematological variables were studied in 137 female and 85 male adult Swiss albino mice. The animals of both sexes were divided into four groups serving as controls, and alcohol (ALC), passive cigarette (PCS) and ALC+PCS exposure traits. Exposures were made with 10%, 20% or 30% v/v alcohol in drinking water, and 4, 8 or 12-lit cigarettes per cage and day for the 1^{st}, 2^{nd} and 3^{rd} to 7^{th} weeks of the experiment, respectively. Efficacy of commonly used selective supplements for detection of E. coli O157:H7 from ground beef was evaluated for suppression of sorbitol positive flora while supporting recovery of sorbitol negative flora. Selectivity of bile free modified E. coli broth (b-mEC) was not improved by the single addition of bile salts no. 3 (1.12 mg/ml), novobiocin (20 µg/ml), cefixime (0.05 µg/ml)-tellurite (2.5 µg/ml), or their combinations. The sorbitol positive flora was more resistant to the selective agents than sorbitol negatives. Sorbitol MacConkey agar and E. coli O157:H7 agar had almost equal selectivity. This study aimed to evaluate clinical signs related with canine leishmaniosis (CanL) and to determine their relation with serological results in the differential diagnosis of this disease in dog populations. A total of 253 dogs from houses and a dog shelter in Kuşadası, an endemic region for leishmaniosis, were investigated for clinical signs related to CanL.
