Various BSA (bovine serum albumin) levels and media effects on development of 2-cell stage mouse embryos in in vitro culture were investigated in this 2 stage study. In the first stage, 1400 2-celled mouse embryos were cultured in 2 various BSA-bearing culture media for 96 h and directly observed microscopically. In the second stage, 1024 2-celled mouse embryos cultured for the same period and cell numbers (nuclei of cells) were determined by staining techniques. Gambusia affinis, Baird & Girard, 1853, originally comes from North America and has been distributed all over the world for the biological control of mosquitoes. This study aimed to determine some biological properties, such as structure, age, growth and reproduction of the populations of G. affinis in Turkey. For this purpose, between November 1998 and October 1999, 2026 mosquitofish were caught in the wetlands of Fethiye-Akgöl, Dalaman and Ortaca in Muğla province in the western Mediterranean region of Turkey and the data found were compared. The purpose of the present study was to determine the distribution of cells containing glucagon (A), insulin (B), and somatostatin (D) in the goose pancreas. Small pieces of tissue from 5 adult geese (Anser anser) pancreases were dissected under deep ether anaesthesia. Sections were stained with Crossmon's connective tissue stain for general observations and Gomori's method for pancreatic islet cells. Sections were further processed for standard immunohistochemical techniques using the avidin-biotin-complex method for the distribution of A, B and D cells. Twenty-five young budgerigars that died with the complaints of abdominal distension and crop swelling were examined pathologically. One hundred and twelve, 8-19-day-old chicks died at the same aviary with the same clinical symptoms over 16 months; the morbidity and mortality rate was 100%. Ascites, hydropericardium, crop and oesophagus ulcers, cardiomegaly, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly and focal hepatic necroses were the predominant necroscopic findings. The histopathological examination revealed characteristic intranuclear inclusion bodies in the liver, kidney, spleen, lung, oesophagus, crop, brain, pancreas, heart, gut, thymus and bone marrow. The aim of this study is to analyse the polymorphism of various microsatellites, which have been previously defined as polymorphism for sheep, and to evaluate the use of the Kıvırcık sheep population, which is indigenous to Turkey in relationship testing. A 1-year-old male German Shepherd dog was brought in because its hard palate had been damaged by the left mandibular canine tooth. On inspection of the oral structure, lingual deviation to the interproximal area between the upper canine and lateral incisor of the left mandibular canine tooth and mild palatal trauma were seen. Feeding Biology Of Silurus Glanis (L., 1758) Living In Hirfanlı Dam Lake, Ni̇hal Doğan Bora, Ali̇ Gül

Stomach contents and feeding features of Silurus glanis living in Hirfanlı Dam Lake were investigated. Recognizable organisms were found in the stomachs of 91 Silurus glanis out of 162 caught between September 1996 and August 1997. The stomach contents of Silurus glanis and their levels were as follows: Gammarus (21.87%), Odonata (19.79%), Sander lucioperca (19.79%), Tinca tinca (18.76%), Silurus glanis (1.04%) and Gastropoda (1.04%). In addition, it was noted that 1.04% of the organisms found in the stomachs of Silurus glanis were Homoptera and 2.08% were the parasite Platyhelminthes.

A Karyological Analysis Of Garra Rufa (Heckel, 1843) (Pisces, Cyprinidae) From The Eastern Mediterranean River Basin In Turkey, Serap Ergene Gözükara, Tolga Çavaş

A cytogenetic investigation on 12 Garra rufa (Heckel, 1843) specimens, from Müftü stream, was carried out by a slight modification of the conventional air-dried technique, using gill epithelial cells. The diploid chromosome number of this species was 2n = 44, comprising 22 metacentric and 20 submetacentric chromosomes and 2 acrocentric chromosome carrying satellites (NF = 85). A haploid idiogram, based on the chromosome measurements, was prepared. A detailed standard karyotype of G. rufa was established for the first time in this study.

The study material was composed of nine dogs 2.5-9-month-old which were brought to the Clinic of the Surgery Department, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ankara between 1992 and 2001 with proximal tibial fractures diagnosed with clinical and radiographic examinations. The incidence of proximal tibial fractures was much lower than that of other tibial fractures in this period. Gyrodactylus arcuatus Bychowsky, 1933 was identified on the three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus L., 1758 in the present study, which was carried out between January and May 2000. A total of 151 fish specimens were examined. The infestation prevalence and mean intensity levels were 80.2% and 35.44 ± 8.87 parasites per fish, respectively. The infestation prevalence and mean intensity levels were highest in February and May, respectively. No statistically significant preference for either sex of fish was determined. The status of populations of anchovies in Turkish terrestrial waters was preliminarily investigated using morphometric characters with the truss network system. Samples were taken from the main fishing areas of each sea, comprising the central (Sinop) and eastern (Trabzon) Black Sea, the Aegean Sea (İzmir) and the eastern Mediterranean (İskenderun). Plotting discriminant functions 1 and 2, explaining 93% of between-group variability, revealed a high degree of dissimilarity among the anchovy samples, indicating that the anchovies in each sea represent different aggregations. This study examined the pathological changes in tissues and organs with acute intoxications with amitraz and its veterinary medicinal formulation. In total 312 healthy white English mice (Mus musculus), 156 female and 156 male, were used for this purpose. An investigation was carried out to determine whether transmission of passive immunity from the mother to the fry occurred in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata. Female guppies were immunized by an intraperitoneal injection of formalin-killed Aeromonas hydrophila bacterin. Agglutinating antibody titers and the precipitating antibody in the body fluid of female guppies and their fry were investigated. The protection against the A. hydrophila pathogen by maternal immunity was also tested. The effects of ethanol and 4-methyl pyrazole were investigated in the treatment of 30 dogs toxicated with antifreeze (AF). The AF toxication produced significant increases in blood urea, creatinin and potassium and a decrease in blood calcium levels. Calcium-oxalate monohydrate, which is pathognomic for AF toxication, was consistently seen in urine sediment. Ethanol was rarely effective on the multisystemic effects that occurred in dogs or ADH inhibition. CNS findings were also observed after ethanol administration. Some growth properties of 407 specimens of the mirror carp population introduced into Gelingüllü Dam Lake between 1998 and 2000 were studied in order to determine changes in growth over time. The data obtained were compared with those of other populations of the same species in other regions of Turkey. The age of the mirror carp in Gelingüllü Dam Lake ranged between I and V. The molecular weight and kinetic properties of pyruvate kinase purified from human normal and tumor breast tissues were studied and the activity levels of pyruvate kinase from normal and tumor breast tissues were compared. The presence of 2 forms of pyruvate kinase in human breast tissue was demonstrated by DEAE Sephadex A-50 chromatography. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Leishmania infantum and Dirofilaria immitis infection in dogs housed outdoors in Aydın province and Selçuk in western Turkey. Anti-Leishmania antibodies were evaluated in sera samples by IFA and ELISA techniques. The presence of D. immitis microfilariae was determined in blood samples by use of the modified Knott’s test. Using the IFA and ELISA on 158 dogs surveyed, 5 (3.2%) were positive for anti-Leishmania antibodies while 22 (13.9%) were found infected with D. immitis. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, Yersinia enterocolitica and Salmonella enteritidis in 123 liquid whole quail eggs. The method suggested by USDA-FSIS was used for the isolation and identification of L. monocytogenes. S. enteritidis was identified and sero-grouped by co-agglutination test and slide agglutination test. Y. enterocolitica was isolated in Trypticase-Soy Broth, with bile-oxalate-sorbose medium for enrichment. Both enrichment cultures were plated on Yersinia Selective Agar Base containing cefsulodin, irgasan and novobiocin (CIN Agar). No Yersinia was detected among the natural flora of the quail eggs. The nutrient composition, and feed value of cactus were evaluated through total collection and nylon bag techniques. In the first trial conducted with 3 Chios rams, digestion coefficients of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, ether extracts, crude fiber and nitrogen-free extracts of cactus leaves (cladodes) and cactus silage were found to be 57.57, 79.20, 72.69, 79.13, 27.95 and 84.14%; 57.32, 69.40, 33.21, 90.10, 13.08 and 78.45%, respectively. Microbial gas production (MGP), fermentation kinetics and DM loss of crop silages made from 7 different plant families (barley/pea, clover, grass, kale, lotus, lucerne, sainfoin) and 10 different refusals were determined. The pressure transducer technique (PTT) was used to measure the microbial gas production of fresh and ground silages and refusal samples at regular intervals throughout the 120 h incubation. The MGP of fresh and ground silages were similar (r^2 = 0.90). The significant increase in the concentration ratio in Turkey’s fluid milk market has heightened concern about the exercise of market power. During 1980-98, the 4-firm concentration ratio and Herfindahl index increased by 11% and 33%, respectively. In this study, we estimated the degree of imperfection in the fluid milk market at retail level using the New Empirical Industrial Organization approach during the period 1980-98. For this purpose, the demand equation and first-order-profit maximization condition, which allow the degree of market power to be determined, were estimated. This study was conducted between March 2001 and February 2002 to investigate the size composition, growth characteristics and stock size of the pikeperch, Sander lucioperca (L. 1758), population of Lake Eğirdir. In the population, the rate of individuals more than 2 years of age and 20 cm was very low. The average length and weight of the commercial catch were also low. The length-weight relationship and von Bertalanffy growth equation were W = 0.006 L^{3.148} and L_t = 95.4*(1-e^{-0.0841(t+1.5638)}), respectively, and the average condition factor was 0.992. The first event in the infection process of Ostertagia ostertagi in cattle is the process of exsheathment. Before trichostrongylid nematodes can transition from a free-living infective stage larva (L3) on pasture to a parasitic existence within the ruminant host, it must first undergo exsheathment. Exsheathment is the process whereby the L2 cuticle retained from the previous molt is cast from the L3. Validation of diagnostic assay performance is hampered where no gold standard exists. Bayesian estimates of the sensitivity and specificity were applied to studies of two persistent bovine infections: bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV), and bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV). BVDV pathogenesis is well described. Losses of $20 million in 1992 alone led the Danish government to mandate eradication. Two enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) tests were developed; one antibody-based to detect exposure, one antigen-based to detect persistent infection.
