In this study, the electrocardiographic parameters necessary to determine cardiac enlargements and to establish and distinguish such complaints from each other in the early stage in dogs with circulatory problems were assessed. The material of the study consisted of 33 dogs 1.5-15 years of age with cardiac enlargements determined from 140 dogs suspected of having cardiac disease based on clinical, radiographic and electrocardiographic analyses. Histological Investigation Of The Effects, On The Kidneys Of Chickens, Of Feeding With A Diet Containing Hot Red Pepper, Nesri̇n Özfi̇li̇z, Hati̇ce Erdost, Artay Yağci

This study was carried out on isobrown chicks fed from one day old on a diet containing 1% hot red pepper. Lenfoid infiltration and hyperemic areas in the parenchym, and hypertrophy in most of the glomeruli were observed. A thickening and adhesion of parietal and visceral sheets was observed in the glomeruli of some of the experimental groups. The average glomerulus diameter of the experimental groups was much more than that of the control groups, and these differences were thought to be statistically significant.

The objective of the present study was to mature and fertilize primary sheep oocytes in vitro and to develop them to the blastocyst stage. Ovaries from slaughtered Kıvırcık ewes were used. The ovaries were transported to the laboratory in a vacuum flask in which 30-35 °C PBS (phosphate buffered saline) was included. The cumulus-oocyte complexes were collected by rupturing and washing the follicle wall with oocyte washing medium. Evaluation Of Echocardiographic Findings Via Doppler Technique In Rabbits, Melahat Toker, Vedat Sağmanligi̇l

In this study, echocardiograpic examination was performed on 20 healthy New Zealand rabbits. All rabbits were examined by the color Doppler technique using a 5-7.5 Mhz transducer. Images were obtained from parasternal long axis, parasternal short axis, apical four-chamber and modified four-chamber sections. The anatomy and function of hearts were examined in each rabbit individually. The values obtained were not significantly different from those obtained in dogs and cats. In addition, the changes seen in the right ventricle parameters were consistent with the changes in the left ventricle parameters.

Considering the relation between the endocrine and immune systems, the effects of zeranol, a synthetic oestrogen compound, on the growth rate and nonspecific immune system in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Walbaum) were investigated. For this reason, fish were fed a diet containing 0, 2.5, 5, 10 and 20 ppm zeranol for 21 days. This study was conducted to determine the fattening performance of Sönmez type lambs weaned on average at 60±5 days old. Sixty lambs were put into four different pens, as single males (15), single females (15), twin males (15) and twin females (15), and the fattening period was 56 days in length. The daily weight gains were 282.14 g, 242.49 g, 207.31 g and 179.99 g for single males, single females, twin males and twin females, respectively. This study was carried out an 21 male, 7-month-old, white New Zealand rabbits. The anterior cruciate ligaments in the stifle joints were excised in both knees under general anesthesia. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of fascia lata autografts in the prevention of adhesion development during tendon rupture healing in dogs. A total of 12 dogs were divided equally into 4 groups. After performing experimental tenotomy and tenorraphy of the left achilles tendon, it was covered with an autogenic fascia lata graft in place of the tendon sheath. This is the first report about natural Dermatophilus congolensis infection in Turkey. This study was carried out in order to determine the species diversity, abundance, and distribution and seasonal frequency occurrence times of the eggs and larvae of Teleost fish in Izmir Bay during 1989-1990. A total of 32140 eggs and 6582 larvae were collected from plankton samples and 69 species belonging to 27 families were identified. The most abundant families included Sparidae 23.79%, Clupeidae 24.63%, Mullidae 12.22%, Serranidae 8.72% and Mugilidae 8.04% of total eggs, and Gobiidae 67.38%, Sparidae 9.43% and Blennidae 9.31% of total larvae. In this paper, four diagnostic techniques were compared in terms of their ability to detect BVD virus in buffy coats frozen for more than one year. The samples were selected according to their initial test results. Forty-five BVDV positive and 15 BVDV negative buffy coats were used. The techniques used were the virus isolation-immunoperoxidase test (IPX), immunoperoxidase monolayer assay (IPMA), indirect immunoperoxidase monolayer assay (IIPMA) and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The Effect Of Long-Term Supplemental Dietary Cadmium On Lipid Peroxidation And The Antioxidant System In The Liver And Kidneys Of Rabbits, Ebru Beytut, Mesut Aksakal

We investigated the effects of chronic exposure to dietary cadmium (Cd) on the levels of lipid peroxidation (LPO) and reduced glutathione (GSH) associated with activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and the catalase (CAT) enzyme in the liver and kidneys of rabbits. Twenty 10-month-old clinically healthy New Zealand white rabbits (10/group) of 3545 ± 250 g average body weight were used. The control group was allowed to take food and tap water ad libitum, while the experimental group was given tap water containing 200 ppm CdCl_2/L for 28 weeks. Lipid peroxidation contents increased significantly in the liver (p < 0.001) and kidneys (p < 0.005) of Cd-treated rabbits. Glutathione levels decreased significantly in both the liver (p < 0.001) and the kidneys (p < 0.005) of the experimental group. Cadmium treatment caused a significant decrease in the activities of GSH-Px and CAT in the liver (p < 0.001, p < 0.01) and kidneys (p < 0.005, p < 0.1) of the rabbits. These results indicated that a Cd-induced increase in LPO was associated with reductions in GSH-Px and CAT enzyme activities, and in GSH levels in the liver and kidneys of rabbits.

During recent decades, the study of fatty acids (FAs) belonging to the n-3 family in seafood has intensified due to their beneficial effect on cardiovascular disease. This study was undertaken to determine the FA composition of muscle lipids of three different farm raised trouts (Salvelinus alpinus, Salmo trutta fario and Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed the same diet and raised under the same conditions. Palmitic acid (16:0) in total saturated fatty acid (SFA) and oleic acid (18:1 n-9) in monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) were the most abundant FAs and significant differences (P < 0.05) were observed between fish species. The differences in total SFA among the trouts were significant (P < 0.01), and O. mykiss had the highest (31.92%) SFA content while S. trutta fario showed the lowest in their edible muscle tissue. However, there was a significantly (P < 0.01) opposite observation for MUFA among the trouts, in which S. trutta fario had the highest content (41.90%) of MUFA in their muscle tissue while O. mykiss had the lowest (30.81%). The differences for the polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content among the species were not significant (P > 0.05). O. mykiss had the highest n-3 PUFA (22.41%) while …

In this study, the capture efficiencies and catch rates of three different traps were compared for the blue crab Callinectes sapidus in Beymelek Lagoon, Antalya, Turkey. All gear was used simultaneously and in the same habitats. The mean catch per unit effort (CPUE) was determined to be significantly higher for hoop nets than for traps. Gear effectiveness was examined by comparing CPUE (CPUE as number of crab per trap per haul, and g per trap haul), mean weight of individual crabs, catch composition and width frequency distributions of the blue crab for each gear.

Fish were exposed to three different sublethal doses in order to determine the effects of Cypermethrin on some biochemical parameters (Ca-Calcium, P-Phosphorus, Na-Sodium and TP-Total Protein) of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). After 15 days exposure, Ca and P decreased, while TP and Na took various values depending on the doses of synthetic pyrethroid.

Thymic nurse cells are isolated thymic epithelial/thymocyte complexes described in vitro. Their in vivo existence is controversial. We examined rat thymi in order to distinguish thymic nurse cells in vivo using the zinc iodide-osmium tetroxide (ZIO) fixation/staining technique. There were mainly two types of strongly ZIO reactive cells in the thymic cortex: macrophages and small clusters of thymic epithelial cells. The latter group was composed of thymic epithelial cells and intact thymocytes forming complexes. Thus we suggest that these structures are in situ equivalents of thymic nurse cells.

In this study, the detection of canine parvovirus (CPV) in a fecal sample from a dog with enteritis was performed for the first time using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in Turkey. The final PCR product was analyzed using the restriction fragment length polymorphysm (RFLP) technique. RFLP analysis using Apa LI and Eco RV restriction endonucleases revealed homology in the nucleotide sequence in at least the VP2 coding region of the virus DNAs detected in the fecal specimen and prepared from attenuated vaccine virus as a positive control.

Histopathology Of The Epidermal Papilloma In Cage Cultured Mirror Carp (Cyprinus Carpio) In Eğirdir Lake, Öznur Di̇ler, M. Rüştü Özen

In this study, the histopathology of enzootic epidermal papillomas in cage cultured mirror carp from the Liman region of Eğirdir Lake was investigated. Macroscopically, the lesions were creamy-white, had a villus-like structure and were localised in the operculum, lateral line and fins. Histopathological studies showed that lesions were the result of hyperplasia of fibrous connective tissue and epidermal tissues. The cells of both tissues were faintly stained by HxE and PAS. Under light microscopy, cytoplasmic vacuolation in epidermal cells in the lesions was prominent. Mucous cells were relatively common and larger than normal. Chemotherapy effectively cured all lesions.

The effects of 90 Hz and 5 mT EMF on blood Ca^{++}, P^{+++}, Na^{+}, K^{+} and Cl^{-} levels were investigated. For this purpose, 72 Swiss-Albino mice were used. On days 15, 30 and 45, blood was taken from both the experimental and control groups. A statistically significant decrease in the calcium level was only observed on day 30. On days 15 and 45, a statistically significant increase in the phosphorus level was determined. In this study, 120 British male mice, weighing 35-40 g, and 5 months old were used. Three groups, one control (Group I) and two experimental (Groups II and III), were formed. One experimental group (Group II) received 60 Hz and 5 mT, while the other (Group III) received 90 Hz frequency and 5 mT magnetic flux density efficacy electromagnetic field (EMF), between 900 and 1700. As regards fiber diameter quality and yields, Turkish Merinos have proven successful. They have better fertility and meat yields than native species bred in Turkey. It is of significance to know the similarity degree between Turkish Merinos and Deutsches Merinofleischschaf. This study was conducted to determine the presence and contamination levels of Listeria spp. in 100 samples of chicken meat, including 40 mince meat samples, 30 meatball samples and 30 burger samples which were retailed fresh in the markets of Ankara. USDA/FSIS suggested methods were used for the isolation and identification of Listeria spp., while the number of Listeria spp. was detected by the Most Probable Number (MPN) technique. In this study, the oviducts of 10 laying hens aged 8 months and 10 oviducts of pullets aged 2 months were comparatively examined. The oviducts of hens consisted of five regions: infundibulum, magnum, isthmus, uterus and vagina. Tissue samples were taken from the five oviduct regions. The samples were fixed in 10% neutral formalin and embedded in paraffin and then cut into 6 micron sections. This study was carried out with a total of 23 animals: two dogs and 21 cats. Appropriate mini-titanium plates and screws were selected with the aid of radiographs the day before the operation. All the animals were anesthesized with xylazine hydrochloride 2.3 mg/kg IM (Rompun, Bayer, Turkey) premedication followed by ketamine hydrochloride 10 mg/kg IM (Ketalar, Eczacıbaşı, Turkey) injection. This study was carried out to compare the growth, fattening performance and carcass characteristics of Morkaraman (M) and Kıvırcık (K) x (K x M) Bı lambs. Fifty-four M and 57 K x (K x M) Bı male and female lambs were used for growth traits and 18 M and 30 K x (K x M) Bı for fattening traits, and 6 male lambs for slaughter and carcass traits.
