In this study, the induced antibody level of rainbow trout immunized by Yersinia ruckeri bacterin was determined using two serological techniques, namely, indirect fluorescent antibody (IFAT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The induced humoral antibody levels were studied after intraperitonal injection of Yersinia ruckeri bacterin inoculates containing Freund's incomplete adjuvant or PBS in rainbow trout during the experimental period of 20 weeks. The control and experimental groups each contained 20 fish. The group which was immunized by the PBS containing bacterin inoculate received a booster injection. Some 14 ethanol extracts from 13 plant species collected from various regions of Turkey were assayed for in vitro antibacterial activity against two Gram positive and 5 Gram negative bacteria, using the disc-diffusion and dilution methods. The diameter of the inhibition zone in the disc-diffusion method shows that 12 extracts from the 14 plants studied have antibacterial activity in different levels. The broadest spectrum of activity was exhibited by Malva sylvestris against five bacteria, whereas the Verbascum spp. extract only showed activity against one. In Vitro Antibacterial Activities Of Tilmicosin And Cefquinome Alone Or In Combination Against Certain Poultry Pathogens, Seyyal Ak, Oya Keleş, Tülay Bakirel

The antimicrobial activities of cefquinome and tilmicosin were determined in vitro against P. multocida and O. rhinotracheale of poultry origin by serial broth macrodilution. Both antibiotics exhibited good in vitro antibacterial activity against the strains tested. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for cefquinome was 1.562 µg/ml and for tilmicosin was 0.78 µg/ml for both microorganisms. To investigate the effects of a combination of cefquinome and tilmicosin, the fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) index was determined by checkerboard assay. The antimicrobial combination was additive against P. multocida (FIC=1) and indifferent against O. rhinotracheale (FIC=2).

The objectives of this study were to (i) compare the effects of two staining techniques and one fixative solution on the morphological features of ram spermatozoa and (ii) evaluate the morphological features of dead/live spermatozoa by using Eosin-Nigrosin staining. The morphological features of raw spermatozoa were evaluated (by Phase Contrast microscopy) after staining with Eosin-Nigrosin mixture or Nigrosin (alone), or after fixation with Hancock's buffered formol saline solution. 42 raw pooled semen samples from 6 Kıvırcık rams were used. In this report, the isolation of a Salmonella typhimurium strain as pure culture from abcess foci on the liver, spleen, kidney, stomach and intestines, and lungs of an 8-month-old, male, Thoroughbred foal, which had died in a racehorse breeding farm, is presented. Heavy respiratory infection and prolonged antibiotic therapy were considered to be stress factors that played a significant role in this case.

The possible use of a genus-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the identification of Salmonella colonies was tested on 14 reference strains and 38 clinical Salmonella strains isolated from chickens by the standard method of the National Poultry Improvement Plan and Auxiliary Provisions (NPIP), USDA, U.S.A. All the PCRs using primer pairs InvA1 and InvA2 (5) gave 281 bp amplification product specific for the Salmonella genus and produced results identical (100%) to those obtained with biochemical and serological methods. The influence of various levels of supplemental phytase on P and Ca availability was investigated using morphometric indices and the bone strength of tibiotarsi in broilers. Forty tibiotarsi were used from the Ross 308 male broilers fed corn-soybean meal based diets. The effects of three different starter preparations (Staphylococcus carnosus, Staphylococcus carnosus + Lactobocillus pentosus and Staphylococcus xylosus + Lactobacillus sakei) on the end product of pastırma were investigated. In the production of pastırma samples, dry curing was performed using NaCl, KNO_3, glucose and saccarose, and starter culture was added together with curing compounds to the meat. The starter culture used affected the counts of total aeophilic mesophilic Micrococcus/Staphylococcus and lactic acid bacteria. The morphology of the spinal cord in 15 chickens, 15 ducks and 15 pigeons obtained from the Ankara region were examined. The spinal cord consisted of 15 cervical, 7 thoracic, 14 lumbosacral and 5 coccygeal segments (a total of 41 segments) in the chickens; 15 cervical, 8 thoracic, 16 lumbosacral and 5 coccygeal segments (a total of 44 segments) in the ducks and 13 cervical, 6 thoracic, 13 lumbosacral and 5 coccygeal segments (a total of 37 segments) in the pigeons. This study was carried out to investigate the fattening performance, and slaughter and carcass characteristics of Chios x Akkaraman F_1 and B_1 crossbred lambs. The data for the fattening study were obtained from 8 F_1 and 10 B_1 crossbred lambs. Five male lambs from each genotype were slaughtered to determine the slaughter and carcass characteristics. Lambs were fed with alfalfa hay and concentrates ad libitum in the fattening period. The objectives of the research program were to obtain a better understanding of BCG as a tuberculosis vaccine in possums, and assess its potential as a tool for controlling tuberculosis in wild possum populations. A series of vaccination and challenge experiments were conducted, as well as studies on alternative experimental infection procedures. The program included two field studies, one on the epidemiology of tuberculosis in a population of possums regenerating after localised possum eradication, and the other examined the efficacy of BCG vaccine in a wild population in which tuberculosis was endemic.

In 1994 bovine tuberculosis (Mycobacterium bovis) was discovered in a single free ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in northeastern Michigan (Deer Management Unit 452 @MU 452)). By the end of the 2000 hunting season, 325+ deer within the DMU 452 had been detected with M. bovis and it was generally believed that the disease had radiated from a single focus of infection. However, the presence of three TB positive deer discovered in 1999 well outside of DMU 452 suggested that M. bovis may be endemic at extremely low levels in Michigan white-tailed deer.

The comparative cervical skin test for antemortem diagnosis of tuberculosis was done 169 times on 116 different white-tailed deer of known Mycobacterium bovis infection status. The sensitivity and specificity were 97 and 81%, respectively. The magnitude of change in skin thickness at test sites was not significantly influenced by dosage of inoculum, dissemination of the disease process, or repeated skin testing. However, the magnitude of change in skin thickness was significantly greater in deer infected for less than 109 days than in deer infected for more than 109 days. Successful parasitism of host cells by intracellular pathogens involves adherence, entry, survival, intracellular replication, and cell-to-cell spread. Our laboratory has been examining the role of early events, adherence and entry, in the pathogenesis of the facultative intracellular pathogen Legionella pneumophila. Currently, the mechanisms used by L. pneumophila to gain access to the intracellular environment are not well understood. We have recently isolated three loci, designated enh1, enh2, and enh3, that are involved in the ability of L. pneumophila to enter host cells. In this study, the development of European Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L., 1758) eggs was investigated at different temperatures. The experiments were carried out at 15ºC and 17ºC. The average diameters of the eggs were determined tobe approximately 1.162±0.004 mm. The embryonic development of the eggs was observed every hour and then photographed. The hatching rates were found to be 84.8-89.4% at 15ºC and 82.3-86.3% at 17ºC, respectively. Hatching of the larvae took 87 hours at 15ºC and 69 hours at 17ºC.

A total of 200 wild pigeons, 82 young and 118 adults, captured from 12 localities in Ankara District, were examined for blood parasites. Haemoproteus columbae was found in 57% (114/200) of the pigeons examined, and no other blood parasites were detected.

In this research, some physical characteristics and uses of the coarse fibers obtained from hair goats raised in some provinces of Turkey were examined. For the general provinces, the diameter of fiber and natural length of fiber were 92.1±0.56 µ and 11.6±1.37 cm resepctively. According to the findings, the coarse fibres of hair goats can be used in products such as tents, stiffening cloth, card weaving, floor weaving (çul ve cicim), saddle-bags, bags, sacks, animal feeding bags and socks.

The pharmacokinetics of conventional and long-acting oxytetracycline (OTC) formulation were evaluated in sheep at a single dosage of 20 mg-kg^{-1} body weight (bw). Conventional formulation was injected by intravenous (IV) route and long-acting formulation of oxytetracycline was administered by intramuscular (IM) route. Then blood samples were taken at 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84 and 96 hours. Oxytetracycline analysis was performed by HPLC in plasma. The plasma drug concentration-time profile was characteristic of a two-compartment open model. Estimates of (co)variance components and breeding values for pre-weaning (100-day) and post-weaning (300-day) weights were obtained for a commercial herd of Welsh Black cattle recorded from 1976 to 1996. Estimates were obtained from six animal models ranging from a model with only an additive direct effect to a model that also included an additive maternal effect, a maternal permanent environmental effect and a covariance between additive direct and additive maternal effects. In this study, the effects of an anaesthetic quinaldine sulphate (QS) and a muscle relaxant, diazepam (D), on sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) juveniles (8-9 g) were investigated. When used together with D, the anaesthetic effect of QS was significantly increased. The fish entered light anaesthesia at 15 ppm QS, as compared to 5 ppm QS + 1 ppm diazepam (D). Similarly, a deep anaesthesia level was reached at only 7.5 ppm QS + 1 ppm D as compared to 20 ppm of QS. The use of QS alone at high concentrations (7.5-25 ppm) increased mortality from 10% to 100%. Serological Survey Of The Infection Of Parainfluenzavirus Type 3 In Cattle In Malatya, Aykut Özdarendeli̇, Mehmet Kandi̇l

Cattle serum samples were examined for antibodies to parainfluenza type 3 (PI-3) virus using the hemaglutination-inhibition (HI) test. These sera were taken in autumn 1994 and spring 1995 from clinically healthy cattle in Malatya. Antibodies to PI-3 virus were detected in 897 out of 1000 cattle sera 89.7%. Reciprocal antibody titres to PI-3 virus in cattle ranged from 1:16 to 1:1024. It was determined that the proportion of seropositive sera in the cattle in the spring was higher than in the autumn.

In this retrospective study, some epidemiologic aspects and histopathologic characteristics of 236 canine mammary tumours diagnosed at the Pathology Department, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ankara, from 1973 to 1998 were evaluated. Forty-eight of 236 dogs with tumours (23.08%) were poodle, 40 (19.23%) were caniche, 30 (14.43%) were terrier, 27 (12.98%) were German shepherd, 15 (7.21%) were pinscher, 48 (23.08%) were 13 different breeds and the breeds of 28 (11.86%) were not known. A Study On The Growth Properties And Livability Of Tushin Lambs, Mevlüt Karaoğlu, Muhli̇s Maci̇t, Hakki Emsen

The birth weight and weaning weight of all the lambs were 4.35 kg, and 16.79 kg respectively. The weight at the beginning and end of the grazing period, and the total and daily weight gain of females on the pasture in were found to be 15.62 kg, 24.51 kg, 6.03 kg and 66.37g respectively. The values of survival rate in different periods were determined to be 95.2 percent until the 30th, 60th and 90th days. Tushin lambs showed as good a performance as Akkaraman and Morkaraman lambs reared in different environmental conditions.

In this study, mitral valves, left ventricle volume and myocardial contractibility indices in English racing (n:30) and show-jumping horses (n:30) were investigated using M-mode echocardiography. The percentages of fractional shortening (% EF), ejection fraction (% EF), and the mean velocity of circumferential shortening (Vcf) were determined on each of three transducer positions. This study was carried out to determine the effects of heat and sodiummetabisulfite treated soybeans in broiler rations on live weight, feed consumption, feed efficiency, and the weights of the liver, pancreas, kidney, spleen and heart and the severity of lesions in these organs. A total of 160 one- day - old Hysex Brown broiler chicks were used in the experiment. There were eight groups each containing 20 chicks. The experiment lasted seven weeks.
