The Effects Of Fatigue On Biomechanics Of Soccer Shooting, Hyunwook Lee
Master’s Theses and Projects
Soccer is reputedly the most popular sport in the world with over 40 million registered players. Because soccer is a sport that is played mainly with the use of lower extremity, it is important to know about the fatigue in lower extremity and how muscle fatigue affects to the performance such as kicking, shooting, and passing. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of fatigue on the kinematic changes in the lower extremity in soccer shooting. Six competitive collegiate male soccer players (n = 6) participated in this study (height: 1.76 ± 0.06 m; weight: 71.38 ± …
The Effects Of Fatigue On Biomechanics Of Heading Performance In Soccer, Seunguk Han
The Effects Of Fatigue On Biomechanics Of Heading Performance In Soccer, Seunguk Han
Master’s Theses and Projects
Soccer is one of the high intermittent sports, in which the athletes perform various activities of different intensities over a prolonged period. One of the most important and potentially dangerous skills in soccer is heading because it can potentially cause concussion if it is not executed correctly. Even though coaches and practitioners recognize that heading the ball is one of the factors to cause concussion, there are few studies that have examined the kinematics of head and neck motion while performing heading skill. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of short period fatigue on the …
Best Practices For Screening, Identification, And Referral Of Female Collegiate Athletes With Disordered Eating, Brenda Caudill
Best Practices For Screening, Identification, And Referral Of Female Collegiate Athletes With Disordered Eating, Brenda Caudill
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, including depression. Female collegiate athletes are at greater risk compared to the non-athlete population. Athletic personnel should be prepared to screen, identify, and refer female athletes for eating disorders. However, most staff are not familiar with common signs and symptoms of disordered eating, which could delay recognition of unhealthy behavior and ultimately long-term health risks. Appropriate screening protocols can assist with early identification. The purpose of this DNP project was improve the knowledge of the athletic staff regarding eating disorder recognition, awareness of university policy for identification and referral …

The ability of vertebrates to generate rhythm within their spinal neural networks is essential for walking, running, and other rhythmic behaviors. The central pattern generator (CPG) network responsible for these behaviors is well-characterized with experimental and theoretical studies, and it can be formulated as a nonlinear dynam- ical system. The underlying mechanism responsible for locomotor behavior can be expressed as the process of leaky integration with resetting states generating appropriate phases for changing body velocity. The low-dimensional input to the CPG model generates the bilateral pattern of swing and stance modulation for each limb and is consistent with the desired …

Respiratory Muscle Training Positively Affects Vasomotor Response In Young Healthy Women, Angela Valentina Bisconti, Michela Devoto, Massimo Venturelli, Randall Bryner, Mark Olfert, Paul D. Chantler, F. Esposito
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Vasomotor response is related to the capacity of the vessel to maintain vascular tone within a narrow range. Two main control mechanisms are involved: the autonomic control of the sympathetic neural drive (global control) and the endothelial smooth cells capacity to respond to mechanical stress by releasing vasoactive factors (peripheral control). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of respiratory muscle training (RMT) on vasomotor response, assessed by flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and heart rate variability, in young healthy females. The hypothesis was that RMT could enhance the balance between sympa- thetic and parasympathetic neural drive and reduce …

Applied Health Sciences Student Works
Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs) are common in contact sports. There is an association between mTBIs and altered motor function. BioSway technology measures individuals’ balance using the Balance Error Scoring System (BESS). Prior to incorporating BESS testing in concussion protocol, other variables that influence the BESS test require review. The objective of this study is to determine if game fatigue in hockey players also influences the BESS score. 23 male (21.08 ± 1.09) National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athletes were tested using the BioSway™ (Biodex, USA). The BESS test measures the Sway Index (SI) - a calculation of deviation from …

Kinesiology (Formerly Exercise and Sport Science)
Movement variability has been considered important to execute golf swing yet is comparatively unexplored regarding the golf putt. Movement variability could potentially be important considering the small margins of error between successful and a missed putt. The aim of this study was to assess whether variability of body segment rotations influence putting performance (ball kinematic measures). Eight golfers (handicap range 0-10) performed a 3.2 metre level putt wearing retro-reflective markers which were tracked using a three-dimensional motion analysis system sampling at 120 Hz. Ball roll kinematics were recorded using Quintic Ball Roll launch monitor. Movement (segment) variability was calculated based …

The Association Between The Coach-Athlete Relationship And Burnout Among High School Coaches, Scott Westfall, Eric M. Martin, Daniel Gould
Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Burnout is a term that continues to raise considerable concern among high school coaches and administrators (Raedeke, 1997) and has shown to have negative effects on coaches and athletes alike (Price & Weiss, 2000; Vealey, Armstrong, & Comar, 1998). While burnout has shown to have significant adverse effects, few studies have examined how the coach-athlete relationship may affect a coach s level of perceived burnout. This study sought to understand if the coach-athlete relationship predicted coach burnout. High school coaches (69 males, 62 females) completed the Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (CART-Q; Jowett & Ntoumanis, 2004), the Coaching Burnout Questionnaire, a modified …

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications
Many species exhibit prosocial behavior , in which one individual’s actions benefit another individual, often without an immediate benefit to itself. The neuropeptide oxytocin is an important hormonal mechanism influencing prosociality in mammals, but it is unclear whether the avian homologue mesotocin plays a similar functional role in birds. Here, we experimentally tested prosociality in pinyon jays (Gymnorhinus cyanocephalus), a highly social corvid species that spontaneously shares food with others. First, we measured prosocial preferences in a prosocial choice task with two different pay-off distributions: Prosocial trials delivered food to both the subject and either an empty cage …
