Running Shoes For People With Haglund's Deformity, Matthew Klein Jan 2023

Running Shoes For People With Haglund's Deformity, Matthew Klein

Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy

Heel counters are one of the many footwear components that are commented on here at Doctors of Running. Heel counters are (usually) a rigid piece of material embedded in or molded around the upper of the rearfoot. The purpose is to provide structure to this part of the shoe and potentially stabilize the heel. There are now several variations, going from ones that wrap completely around the heel, to split heel counters (a piece left out at the rearmost portion) and even super thin heel counters just to keep the upper from collapsing. While many people do well with these …

Everything You Need To Know About Running Shoe Wear Patterns, Matthew Klein Jan 2023

Everything You Need To Know About Running Shoe Wear Patterns, Matthew Klein

Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy

Look online for information on running shoes and you’ll soon see articles about wear patterns on the bottom of your shoes. Usually, these articles promise “secret knowledge” of what each wear pattern means and what horrible injury you’re therefore due. Individual companies often claim that certain wear patterns mean you need specific shoes or orthotics, which, lucky for you, they happen to be selling.

Most of this information is flat-out wrong. There’s simply no compelling evidence linking wear patterns on your running shoes with an increased risk for a given injury. Nor is there a relationship between your wear …

Changes In Running Biomechanics In Master Runners Over Age 50: A Systematic Review, Matthew Klein, Chris Patterson Jan 2023

Changes In Running Biomechanics In Master Runners Over Age 50: A Systematic Review, Matthew Klein, Chris Patterson

Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy

The number of individuals over 50 years of age participating in recreational and competitive running has increased over the past ten years. It has been established that older runners experience a reduction in strength and power. These changes may contribute to different running biomechanics from younger runners. The pur-pose of this study was to synthesise the current evidence on run-ning biomechanical differences in the lower extremity between masters runners over 50 years and younger runners under 40 years. The systematic data search included CINAHL, MEDLINE, and SPORTDiscus databases. Fourteen cross-sectional studies that com-pared lower extremity biomechanics of masters runners to …

Experiences In The Return-To-Work Process Of Workers Having Suffered Occupational Injuries In Small And Medium Size Enterprises, Jessika Audet, Alexandra Lecours, Iuliana Nastasia

Études primaires

BACKGROUND:

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) represent 95 % of businesses and are economically essential. When occupational injuries occur, scientific literature suggests that the return-to-work (RTW) success rate is proportional to the size of enterprises and the way RTW is managed may put workers in SMEs at risk. As most studies on RTW organizational practices have been conducted with large enterprises, little is known about how RTW is managed in SMEs.

OBJECTIVE:

The aim of this study was to explore SME’s organizational practices in the RTW process of workers having suffered an occupational injury.

METHODS:

Semi-structured phone interviews were conducted …

Exploring The Effect Of Early Motor Delay And Physical Therapy Interventions On The Parent-Child Relationship, Rebecca Molinini Jan 2023

Exploring The Effect Of Early Motor Delay And Physical Therapy Interventions On The Parent-Child Relationship, Rebecca Molinini

Theses and Dissertations

Emotional availability (EA) or the ability of the parent-child dyad to engage emotionally and partake in congruent and mutually enjoyable interactions, is essential for familial health and well-being. EA is considered the “connective tissue” of healthy parent-child relationships and is associated with secure attachment, maternal mental health, and children’s adaptive development. Most evidence supporting the integral role of EA on healthy outcomes is supported by typically developing populations in which adults present with a social or biological risk factor such as experiencing past traumas of adversities with mental health. In line with the transactional model of development, children are equal …

Effect Of Chronically Suppressed Plasma Angiotensin Ii On Regulation Of The Cyp4a/20-Hete Pathway In The Dahl Salt-Sensitive Rat, Kathleen M. Lukaszewicz, John R. Falck, Julian H. Lombard

Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications

In Dahl salt-sensitive (SS) rats, impaired vascular relaxation can be restored by: (1) minipump infusion of a low (sub-pressor) dose of angiotensin II (ANG II) to restore physiological levels of plasma ANG II, (2) inhibition of 20-HETE production, and (3) introgression of a normally functioning renin allele from the Brown Norway rat (SS-13BN consomic rat). Unlike SS rats, SS-13BN rats have normal levels of ANG II on a normal-salt diet and suppressed ANG II on a high-salt (HS) diet. This study tested whether chronically low ANG II levels in SS rats upregulate cytochrome P450-4A (CYP4A) increasing the production …
