Advocacy For On-Campus Occupational Therapy In College Athletics, Doyle C. Taylor, Keisa Boykin
Advocacy For On-Campus Occupational Therapy In College Athletics, Doyle C. Taylor, Keisa Boykin
Spring 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium
This project focuses on a growing issue in college sports: the lack of accessible, specialized rehabilitation for student-athletes. Many universities rely on off-campus providers for occupational therapy, which often leads to delays in treatment, missed appointments, and inconsistent care. To address this gap, the project advocates for the integration of occupational therapists directly into athletic departments. By developing and delivering educational workshops, distributing advocacy materials, and engaging with key stakeholders, the project highlights how on-campus OT services can streamline care, improve recovery outcomes, and support both the physical and mental well-being of student-athletes. The goal is to bring awareness to …

Advocating For Pots; A Misdiagnosed And Underserved Population, Abbey E. Zimmers, Zeida Gutierrez
Spring 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium
Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a form of dysautonomia that primarily affects the autonomic nervous system, making daily activities such as standing or concentrating difficult due to symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, and brain fog. It is most common in young women, often triggered by autoimmune diseases, viral infections, or trauma. POTS is under-diagnosed, with healthcare providers often unaware of its full spectrum of symptoms and the role of occupational therapy in managing daily function. Occupational therapy (OT) can significantly improve quality of life by helping patients manage symptoms and regain independence. Raising awareness of POTS and the benefits of …

Enhancing Understanding Of Infant Cues And The Role Of Rehabilitative Therapies In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Lexie Jones
Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctorate - Doctoral Capstone Symposium
Research emphasizes the importance of early rehabilitative therapy involvement in the NICU to improve outcomes for preterm infants. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends the presence of occupational therapy (OT) and speech-language therapy (SLP) services in Level III NICUs to enhance neurodevelopment, promote feeding success, and support interdisciplinary collaboration (AAP, 2020). Cue-based feeding approaches have been linked to improved weight gain, reduced hospital stays, and decreased physiological stress in preterm infants compared to volume-driven approaches (Pados et al., 2020). However, limited staff understanding of infant behavioral cues and the distinct roles of OT and SLP can lead to missed …

The Role Of Occupational Therapy In The Care Of Informal Caregivers Of People With Dementia: A Concept Analysis, Ashley M. Taylor, Steven M. Gerardi, Elizabeth Deluca-Berg
Spring 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium
Informal caregivers (care partners) are people, such as family members, who provide care to those who cannot care for themselves, including people with dementia (PwD). Care partners assist PwD in their daily occupations, often without training. Caring for PwD can lead to emotional, physical, financial, and occupational challenges for care partners. Occupational therapy (OT) has a role to play in the care of PwD. However, if clinicians do not operate from a dyadic model, care partners’ needs may be overlooked. Problem: Although addressing the care partner dyad is important to the delivery of OT, the role of OT in the …

The Role Of Occupational Therapy In Bladder And Bowel Management For Individuals With Spinal Cord Injuries: An Educational Video Series, Julia Ryan, Steven Gerardi, Heather Rennerfeldt
Spring 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium
Occupational therapy (OT) practitioners are uniquely positioned to support individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) in developing effective bowel and bladder management (BBM) routines. However, most existing literature approaches BBM from a medical perspective, offering limited guidance on how to translate occupation-based strategies into OT practice. This lack of discipline-specific resources contributes to reduced confidence among generalist practitioners and hinders the consistent implementation of BBM interventions across inpatient and community settings. To address this gap, a nine-part educational video series was developed to enhance OT practitioners’ knowledge, clinical reasoning, and confidence in delivering BBM interventions for clients with SCI. The …

Occupational Therapy For Participation In Spirituality For Individuals With Cancer: A Scoping Review, Natalie Fernandez, Lesley Khan-Farooqi, Steven Gerardi
Spring 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium
The incidence of cancer continues to rise. For many individuals with cancer, spirituality is an important part of life. Spirituality impacts the individual’s meaning, purpose, self-identity, occupational engagement, occupational performance, and quality of life. However, there are sometimes barriers to participation in religions activities. Occupational therapy (OT) is indicated when people have barriers to participation. However, spirituality is not consistently addressed in OT practice and OT practitioners may not feel comfortable in addressing barriers to participation in spiritual activities among their clients with cancer. Objective: Scoping review methodology was used to answer the research question, how are OT practitioners addressing …

Professional Behaviors As Forced Assimilation: A Critical Reflection On The U.S. History Of Education And Beyond, Quinn P. Tyminski, Karla Reese, Linn Wakeford
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Historically, education has been used as a mechanism of assimilation for marginalized identities in the United States, demanding conformity to the dominant culture and society. The occupational therapy (OT) profession is not immune and must examine and understand how our educational systems have erected and maintained barriers designed to exclude people from historically minoritized communities through the lens of professional behaviors. Professionalism and professional behaviors are not well-defined constructs in OT, and there is significant variability among educational institutions in how professional behavior standards are written, communicated, and applied. There is significant inconsistency across OT educational programs in the US …

Occupational Therapist's Role In Sensory Inclusive Space Design, Colleen Mcgill
Occupational Therapist's Role In Sensory Inclusive Space Design, Colleen Mcgill
SURF Posters 2025
The rise in individuals experiencing sensory processing difficulties has revealed the challenges they face in regard to engagement in different environments and social participation. Sensory processing difficulties can impact the individual's social connectedness to entertainment venues that confine larger crowds and overwhelming stimuli, causing a form of occupational deprivation. This form of occupational deprivation can not only affect the individual, but can also impact family interactions at social events. Occupational therapists have proven highly skilled when assessing and treating clients with sensory processing difficulties, as well as evaluating and adapting environments to promote successful participation. With that, there is a …

The Impact Of Moral Injury On Veterans' Occupations, Sydney Santora
Entry Level Occupational Therapy Doctoral Capstone Projects Class of 2025
Occupational therapy has been working with veterans since its origin. Once labeled as shell shock, occupational therapists addressed and continue to address veteran’s mental health, specifically Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). While PTSD still affects veterans, there is another emerging phenomenon that is affecting veterans called moral injury. Moral injury (MI) is a condition resulting from “perpetrating, failing to prevent, bearing witness to, or learning about acts that transgress deeply held moral beliefs and expectations” (Litz et al., 2009, p. 697). There is currently limited literature regarding occupational therapy’s treatment of moral injury. This study aimed to fill the gaps …

Entry Level Occupational Therapy Doctoral Capstone Projects Class of 2025
Caregivers of individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) are essential in supporting health, well-being, and aging in place; however, they are often overlooked in policy and occupational therapy (OT) practice. Caregivers frequently experience heightened levels of stress, anxiety, depression, physical fatigue, and social marginalization. Adults with IDD face disproportionately high rates of chronic disease and mental health conditions, and despite the development of resources to support this population, caregivers report barriers to locating, understanding, and utilizing these assets. A scoping review was conducted to determine and explore the needs of caregivers and the systemic challenges they face, including fragmented …
Parkinson’S Optimal Wellness And Educational Resource (Power) Project, Christina Mcfadden
Parkinson’S Optimal Wellness And Educational Resource (Power) Project, Christina Mcfadden
Entry Level Occupational Therapy Doctoral Capstone Projects Class of 2025
By 2030, over 1.3 million adults in the U.S. are predicted to be diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD), with Pennsylvania exhibiting a notably high incidence (Parkinson’s Foundation, 2023; Willis et al., 2022). Despite this prevalence, non-specialist clinicians, policymakers, and the public generally remain poorly informed in adequately supporting PD (World Health Organization [WHO], 2022). There is a gap within the literature regarding occupational therapy’s (OT) role in community-based PD programming in the U.S. The Parkinson’s Optimal Wellness and Educational Resource (POWER) Project addresses this through a tertiary health approach as identified in the WHO’s Parkinson’s technical brief (2022). Informed by …
