What Is Toe Spring In Running Shoes?, Matthew Klein
What Is Toe Spring In Running Shoes?, Matthew Klein
Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy
The last several years have seen a dramatic change in the looks and design of modern running shoes. As maximal shoe design continues to influence the industry, a majority of shoes are seeing large increases in sole height and bending stiffness and increasing usage of plates. In addition to thicker, stiffer, and plated shoes, you may have noticed an increase in the frequency of another rarely discussed but important component of many running shoes, a large upward curve right under the toes. This feature is called toe spring. With it becoming increasingly prevalent, it’s worth knowing why it exists, …
It’S Okay To Be A Heel Striker, Matthew Klein
It’S Okay To Be A Heel Striker, Matthew Klein
Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy
One of the most frequent questions I’m asked by runners is, “How should my foot land on the ground?” In the wake of the previous decade’s barefoot/minimal shoe movement, people continue to emphasize certain foot strikes over others. (Heel striking is the primary “other” in these discussions.)
Claims are often made about injury prevention, improved speed, improved running efficiency, and certain ways being more “natural.” As with most universal claims in running, there’s a great deal of misinformation here. Let’s look at the facts about foot strikes.
Comparison Of Sport Performance Outcomes In Young Athletes Receiving Hamstring Autograft And Patellar Tendon Autograft For Anterior Cruciate Ligament (Acl) Reconstruction Surgery, Allison Kell
Capstone Showcase
Introduction: ACL rupture is an extremely common injury among athletes of various sports. There are multiple different grafts that can be used in ACL reconstruction surgery. Two forms of graft that are most often considered in the case of ACL reconstruction are the hamstring tendon (HT) autograft and patellar tendon (PT) autograft. Many orthopedic providers have conflicting views regarding which of the two is the ideal graft. There are varying findings comparing the HT and PT, with many parameters to consider when predicting overall outcome. Oftentimes athletes who experience an ACL rupture are young and desire to return to sport …

The purpose of this study was to examine how introducing an aerobic-based exercise training program impacts patients with CF. The question is, “Does exercise improve lung function in a young adult with Cystic Fibrosis?”. METHODS: A …
Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist: Summation Of The Safety Proofs And Benefits, Landry Carneal
Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist: Summation Of The Safety Proofs And Benefits, Landry Carneal
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist (NAVA) is a mode of ventilation that is triggered by neither flow nor pressure but by the electrical activity of the diaphragm (Stein & Firestone, 2018, p. 227). NAVA puts ventilatory control into the hands of the patient and is often used in neonates who are more challenging to ventilate. Medical practitioners, however, are skeptical to put this mode of ventilation into practice with fear that neonates are neither strong enough nor capable to manage their own respiratory efforts without hypoventilation or damage to the lungs (Lubarsky et al., 2020, p. 3). Research shows that despite …

The purpose of this project is to gain an understanding how parents of children with autism are affected by caregiver burnout. We want to understand the different factors that contribute to this burnout and analyze how individuals are affected differently. To do this, we are sending
out a survey using Likert scale items to assess parents’ stress and burnout. We will be carefully selecting statements based off information we gather through peer reviewed journal articles. We would then like the parents to decide how strongly they agree or disagree with each question. This will create a more in-depth picture of …
Intermittent Theta Burst Stimulation: Application To Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation And Computational Modeling, Neil Mittal
Intermittent Theta Burst Stimulation: Application To Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation And Computational Modeling, Neil Mittal
Theses and Dissertations
Loss of motor function from spinal cord injuries (SCI) results in loss of independence. Rehabilitation efforts are targeted to enhance the ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs), but outcomes from physical therapy alone are often insufficient. Neuromodulation techniques that induce neuroplasticity may push the limits on recovery. Neuromodulation by intermittent theta burst transcranial magnetic stimulation (iTBS) induces neuroplasticity by increasing corticomotor excitability, though this has most frequently been studied with motor targets and on individuals not in need of rehabilitation. Increased corticomotor excitability is associated with motor learning. The response to iTBS, however, is highly variable and unpredictable, …

The Therapeutic Value Of Art, Alexandra Eagle
The Therapeutic Value Of Art, Alexandra Eagle
MA Theses
Throughout history art has been regarded as an avenue for expression, healing, and a creative outlet for humanity. From simple cave drawings to detailed and expressive paintings no matter the artistic ability, the intention is to allow an escape from reality and an opening of the unconscious mind. Art is often regarded as just ornate, doodles are considered simple unconscious creations as a stress relieving activity, and artists are viewed as purely creative with a different perspective of life. But for the troubled person, art can provide an avenue of expression allowing their disturbed minds an outlet. Through researching and …
More Than A Myth: The Benefits Of Incorporating Holistic Healing Methods From Native American And Mexican Cultures To Approach Opioid Use Disorder (Oud) Treatment, Juliana Favela
CMC Senior Theses
Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) is a substance use disorder that characterizes a dependence on and an addiction to opioids. Opioids attack the prefrontal cortex, the dopaminergic reward system, and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis which is responsible for the body’s stress response. Opioids constantly shift one’s “set point” to the point where normal actions that cause joy and excitement no longer cause those feelings, resulting in craving and dependence. The opioid epidemic is currently ravaging the United States and has disproportionately affected Native American populations specifically in the rural areas (Tipps, et.al, 2018). The current methods for addressing OUD include medicine …

Biomechanically Inspired Assistive Technology To Restore Movement Of The Upper Limbs After Stroke, Ariel Thomas
Biomechanically Inspired Assistive Technology To Restore Movement Of The Upper Limbs After Stroke, Ariel Thomas
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A stroke often damages the neural structures responsible for movement. Stroke is a heterogeneous disease, affecting each survivor differently. There are common motor features of a stroke, but even these features vary across time as an individual proceeds through different stages of recovery. The different ways in which stroke motor impairment can present itself are often overlooked, but these differences are fundamental to the understanding of the disease and its recovery. When motor assessments are capable of acquiring information necessary to parse out a detailed profile of each stroke case, this will lead to an improved neuromechanical understanding of the …
Tacit To Explicit Knowledge Transfer In A University Health Care Program: Use Of Student-Professor And Professor-Professor Collaboration, Geela Spira, Allen S. Keener
Tacit To Explicit Knowledge Transfer In A University Health Care Program: Use Of Student-Professor And Professor-Professor Collaboration, Geela Spira, Allen S. Keener
Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings
Student feedback indicated difficulty applying Occupational Therapy values such as “participation in meaningful occupations” into clinical interventions. Two instructors of a components-based course and a theory course collaborated to link practical OT interventions to conceptual OT models. Use of a model for transfer of tacit knowledge was utilized. Each instructor kept a reflective diary. An iterative process for a semester attempted to transfer learned explicit knowledge into an integrated intuitive ‘art of the therapy’ which incorporated Occupational Science core concepts. Worksheets were developed to make the pathway more explicit. By semester’s end, students completed a comprehensive plan for client care.
