Relationships Between Sensory Processing, Temperament Characteristics For Effortful Control, And Executive Function In School-Age Children, Rachel B. Diamant, Natasha Smet

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Background: Sensory processing behaviors, the temperament characteristic for effortful control, and executive function promote self-regulation, activity engagement, and problem-solving. This study examined inter-relationships between executive function, effortful control, and sensory processing in school-aged children between 7 and 10.11 years of age.

Method: Descriptive correlation research design was used to examine relationships of outcomes from three caregiver-reported, standardized questionnaires of behaviors related to sensory processing (Sensory Profile-2), effortful control (Temperament in Middle Childhood Questionnaire) and executive function (Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-2) in daily activities (N = 19).

The purpose of this study was to identify the need and level of satisfaction of practicing occupational therapists and students in the Arab world about the Arabic content of the occupational therapy profession, identify difficulties and making recommendations to enhance and enrich the Arabic content in occupational therapy. An online survey was completed by 137 participants from 10 Arab countries, 79.6% were female and 96.4% were in the 18-42 age group. 62% reported that English is the language of occupational therapy references that they have been using, and more than 36% reported that they face various challenges and difficulties in …

Background: Despite the importance of regular sleep patterns being well-known throughout society, a growing number of people claim to be sleep-deprived. There is a need to identify a simple and unobtrusive method in which people can accurately track their sleep to monitor changes and track how their sleep affects their daytime function. Methods: Here, we compared two at-home sleep monitors, the Zeo EEG headband system and the OURA physiological ring, in twenty-seven healthy young adults to determine their relative accuracy in classifying the various sleep stages. Objectives: Limitations in the thoracic spine movement can cause excessive lumbar rotation and back pain; however, it is unclear whether increasing thoracic rotation reduces excessive lumbar rotation. This study aimed to examine the effect of thoracic spine mobilization on the rotation angle of the lumbar spine during trunk rotation. Methods: Twenty healthy volunteers participated in this study. We identified and then mobilized three restricted vertebrae in the thoracic spine through a physical examination using a facet joint traction mobilization technique. Background: This case report describes the clinical course of a patient with right low back pain (LBP) and the use of clinical evaluation findings to initiate medical referral resulting in a diagnosis of cancer presenting as mechanical low back pain. Diagnosis: A 59-year-old male with primary complaints of progressive right-sided LBP affecting his job, sleep, and daily activities was seen by a physical therapist in an outpatient setting. The purpose of this phenomenological study is to understand the Chinese EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy) therapists’ experiences of working with Chinese couples in EFT sessions, as well as to discover how the cultural factors play a role in the effectiveness of EFT use with Chinese couples. Objective: This study aimed to determine the usefulness of the strength of the muscles in hip abduction with flexion while seated (SMHAF-S) in older adults who need nursing care. To achieve this, we examined the reproducibility and validity of a method to measure the SMHAF-S in older adults who need nursing care using a hand-held dynamometer. Background

The ability to regulate one’s emotional state is an important predictor of several behaviors such as reframing a challenging situation to reduce anger or anxiety, concealing visible signs of sadness or fear, or focusing on reasons to feel happy or calm. This capacity is referred to as emotion regulation. Deficits in this ability can adversely affect one’s adaptive coping, thus are associated with a variety of other psychopathological symptoms, including but not limited to depression, borderline personality disorder, substance use disorders, eating disorders, and somatoform disorders.

Background: The reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) is a common surgical intervention to address massive rotator cuff tears concurrent with glenohumeral osteoarthritis.1,2 Kinematics following rTSA have been thoroughly studied, demonstrating significant improvements in gross movement outcomes of the shoulder, specifically functional upper extremity elevation.3 However, the correlation between shoulder kinematics and patient-reported function of the surgically reversed shoulder joint are not well understood.

Background: Rural residents experience more disease, injury, and death than individuals living in metropolitan areas. Six-Month Pain And Function Outcome Expectations Were Established For Total Knee Arthroplasty Using The Smallest Worthwhile Effect, Daniel L. Riddle, Nancy Henderson

Introduction: Interpretations of patient-reported outcome measures following knee arthroplasty lack context and typically do not account for costs, risks and benefits compared to an alternative treatment. The primary purpose of our paper is to estimate expectations patients have for pain and function destination outcome, six-months following surgery relative to the outcome expected if knee arthroplasty was not done. Secondary purposes were to determine if statistically significant changes in the smallest worthwhile six-month outcome occurred following an interactive discussion and to assess the construct validity of the expected six-month outcome obtained at baseline.

For the purposes of this study, we were concerned with the overall mental health of university students, not specific to diagnosed mental illnesses. Blood flow restriction training utilizes a tourniquet system to occlude arterial and venous flow while one performs exercises. This training strategy allows one to exercise using loads at a lower percentage of 1RM while experiencing physiological change similar to those achieved when training at a higher percentage of 1RM.

Background: Despite the positive physical, psychological, and social benefits of sports, children with disabilities participate in sports at a lower rate than their typically developing peers. Partnerships between occupational therapists and youth sports providers can facilitate inclusive sports environments that enable equitable access to sports for all children.

Purpose: The purpose of the Capstone Project was to explore youth gymnastics coaches’ perceptions on inclusive sports participation following an educational module.

Theoretical Framework. The occupational justice framework (Townsend & Wilcock, 2004) guided the development of the project through the view that equitable participation in preferred occupations is an individual right.
