Lumbosacral orthosis (LSO) is a type of spinal orthosis that has been recommended for abdominal support, pain management, and motion or positional control. By implemented radiographic technique, objectives of this study was to evaluate the changes of lumbar lordosis in flexion and extension of trunk movements with and without wearing the LSO measured by Cobb, Centroid, and Posterior Tangent techniques and to correlate the value of lordotic angles in particular posture. Ten healthy male subjects without any history of low back pain participated and a semi-rigid LSO was utilized. Antero-posterior and lateral radiographs of spine images during neutral, flexion, and …
Using Matching Methods From Both Fisher's Experimental Design And Rubin's Causal Model To Compare Between Two Medical Facilities With Extremely Skewed Number Of Subjects, Gideon D. Bahn
Dissertations
The present study deals with the problem of comparison between a two medical facilities' with extremely skewed sample sizes from non-experimental study. The data came from a study of rehabilitation interventions with patients diagnosed with cardiac and pulmonary issues who received treatment either in inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRFs) or in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs). Due to inclusion and exclusion criteria, however, the study had failed to recruit sufficient number of participants between two comparison groups: 319 from IRFs and 27 from SNFs. As a result, the main hypothesis of the study was not tested due to the disparity of the …

The Influence Of Religion And Spirituality On Rehabilitation Outcomes Among Traumatic Brain Injury Survivors, Brigid Waldron-Perrine
Wayne State University Dissertations
The long-term consequences of traumatic brain injury affect millions of Americans, many of whom report using religion and spirituality to cope. Little research, however, has investigated how various elements of the religious and spiritual belief systems affect rehabilitation outcomes. The present study sought to assess the use of specifically defined elements of religion and spirituality as coping resources in a sample of traumatically brain injured adults. Furthermore, various mechanisms by which religion and spirituality may affect outcome were explored.
The sample included 88 adults with brain injury from 1 to 20 years post injury and their knowledgeable significant others (SOs). …

Portable, Non-Invasive Fall Risk Assessment In End Stage Renal Disease Patients On Hemodialysis, Thurmon Lockhart, Adam T. Barth, Xiaoyue Zhang, Rahul Soangra, Emaad Abdel-Rahman, John Lach
Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
Patients with end stage renal diseases (ESRD) on hemodialysis (HD) have high morbidity and mortality due to multiple causes, one of which is dramatically higher fall rates than the general population. The mobility mechanisms that contribute to falls in this population must be understood if adequate interventions for fall prevention are to be achieved. This study utilizes emerging noninvasive, portable gait, posture, strength, and stability assessment technologies to extract various mobility parameters that research has shown to be predictive of fall risk in the general population. As part of an ongoing human subjects study, mobility measures such as postural and …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Spinal arteriovenous malformations is a rare disease. The initial signs are usually in the forms of nonspecific sensory symptoms such as pains and parasthesia; therefore, it is difficult to conclusively diagnose this disease. Here, we report the case of a 30-year-old woman who suffered from a sudden weakness in the 4 limbs 15 years ago. The symptoms subsided after supportive care; she was discharged from a local hospital without further follow ups. Approximately 5 years ago, she had a sudden attack of pains in her left shoulder. The symptoms rapidly progressed to paralysis of the 4 limbs. She was sent …

The Characteristics Of Visual Perception In Children With Diplegic Cerebral Palsy, Fang-Ling Wang, Ling-Fu Meng, Wan-Ju Tu
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Visual perception is the ability to manipulate and integrate the visual information received by brain. Early damage involving the structures of visual perception in the brain will give rise to visual perceptual impairment. The periventricular area is one of those structures related to visual perception. Nearly all preterm infants with spastic diplegia exhibit cystic periventricular leukomalacia. Therefore, it has been wondered if children with diplegic cerebral palsy were at risk of visual perceptual impairment. In fact, behavioral studies have shown that many children with diplegic cerebral palsy demonstrate weakness in some subtests of visual perceptual evaluation. Visual closure, figure-ground, and …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Intravenous pyelography (IVP) is a common tool for evaluating the upper urinary tract in spinal cord injury patients. To obtain a proper image, bowel preparation is required. Among the regimens for bowel preparation, polyethylene glycol (PEG) electrolyte lavage solution has a good cleansing quality and fewer side effects. Nonetheless, adverse effects of the regimen, though rare, have been reported. We describe a spinal cord injury patient who suffered from acute renal failure as a result of PEG-related toxicity, after taking oral PEG electrolyte lavage solution for bowel preparation. A 57-year-old woman who had sustained spinal cord injury for 11 years …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Wilson disease is a rare autosomal recessive inherited disorder of copper metabolism. The genetic defect, localized to chromosome arm 13q, has been shown to affect the copper-transporting adenosine triphosphatase gene. The major pathology is excessive deposition of copper in the liver, brain, and other tissues. The most common presenting neurological features are tremor, dystonia and ataxia that influence the motor control and gait. The diagnosis is confirmed by measurement of serum ceruloplasmin, urinary copper excretion and hepatic copper content as well as the detection of Kayser-Fleischer rings. The subject in our case study is a 25-year-old, female patient with Wilson disease. …

Assessment Of Individual Activities Of Daily Living And Its Association With Self-Rated Health Status In Elderly People, Yu-Ning Hu, Chin-Ching Li, Chia Lee, Rung-Huei Lin, Gwo-Chi Hu
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Health-related quality-of-life in the elderly generally encompasses freedom from disease, good physical and psycho-social well-being, and preventing the loss of function in activities of daily living (ADL). Some indices of ADL, such as basic ADL and instrumental ADL, are considered to be measures of functional status in the elderly. However, in most studies, functional status is evaluated by either the summed ADL score or disability score in one or more ADLs. No studies have investigated the association between an individual's ADL function and self-rated health status. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of functional status (i.e., …
