This brief is about the influence that sports and exercise have on veterans' well-being and therapies that impact the well-being of combat veterans. In policy and practice, healthcare practitioners should prepare comprehensive treatment models that encompass physical activity and sports where appropriate, and support groups should encourage veterans to participate in competitive sports or other recreational activities; the DoD could expand programs to provide sports to more disabled combat veterans and the VA should re-evaluate its programs to ensure there are no barriers to participation. As recommended in the current prescribing information, rituximab infusions in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) take 4.25hours for the first infusion and 3.25hours for subsequent infusions, which is a burden on patients and the health care system. We therefore evaluated the safety of infusing rituximab at a faster rate for an infusion period of 2hours in patients with RA.

BACKGROUND: Guided motor imagery and cross education are two concepts that build upon motor programs. Guided motor imagery consists of imagining a specific action, thereby activating the respective motor program without an actual movement. Cross education incorporates contralateral training to activate the motor program of an action to the resting limb. These techniques yield neurological actions that can lead to improved performance outcomes when integrated into physical therapy programs. Static stretching has been linked to lesser performance in many sport activities. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of static stretching upon gross motor coordination patterns (GMCP) and power and fatigue markers exhibited during vigorous cycling. The performance of 28 females between the ages of eighteen and thirty were analyzed during the Wingate Anaerobic Test (WAnT). Using a counterbalanced design, participants completed the test under two conditions, following static stretching and no stretching. While results showed statistically significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) between conditions for the assessed dependent variables, no statistically significant differences were found between …

Hospital length of stays are decreasing throughout the U.S. in an effort to contain healthcare costs, but these measures can be detrimental to patients. Those who get knee replacement surgery are finding their length of stay reduced from an average of 3 to 4 days to 24 to 48 hours, which can affect pain control and interfere with rehabilitation and recovery. This affects many people, as more than 632,000 knee replacements occur each year (American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, 2008). One of the leading causes of unintentional death worldwide is drowning. From 2005-2009, an estimated 3, 107 people in the United States over the age of fifteen died from drowning (Peden, Oyegbite, & Ozanne-Smith, 2008). Research has found higher amounts of drowning deaths to be males than females and African-American than Caucasian (Saluja et al., 2005). However, no significant differences have been found in real or perceived water competency between gender or age groups (Moran et al., 2012). The purpose of this study was to explore how women in their midlife years use activities of daily living to address possible memory loss by exploring their personal experiences. The review of the literature provides an overview of memory disorders including Alzheimer's disease and other dementias as well as three specific aspects of memory that are affected by these: verbal, spatial, and procedural memory. A questionnaire that targeted women between the ages of 50 and 60 years of age was distributed via social media and e-mail for four weeks. Eighteen women completed the questionnaire. The purpose of this study was to understand why parents of different ethnicity do or do not seek services or follow-up with recommendation for services for children with autism. Data was collected using an electronic questionnaire. The questionnaire asked demographic information about their family’s cultural roots; the age of diagnoses and available services for a child with ASD; and worldviews on health and services for children with ASD, which was distributed via social media. Objective The Children’s Kitchen Task Assessment (CKTA) is an ecologically valid assessment that was designed to assess executive functioning skills in children age 7-10. Currently there is a lack of ecologically valid assessments that test executive functioning in children under seven years of age. Physical activity is critical to bone health. However, not all physical activity has optimum effect on bone health and metabolism. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a short term progressive jumping protocol on bone mineral density in college age Asian females. Sixteen participants aged18-28 years enrolled in the study. Participants were assigned to exercise (n=9) and control (n=8) groups. The purpose of this research study was to examine the influence of Therapeutic Listening® Quickshift on the bilateral coordination of healthy adults with no history of developmental or motor delays. Additional studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of the Therapeutic Listening® modality using measurable outcomes are necessary as many therapists currently use this program, even though few studies prove its effectiveness. This study recruited 14 freshman and sophomore students aged 18-21 years. The Preschool Kitchen Task Assessment (PKTA) is a newly developed assessment tool based on the principles of the Kitchen Task Assessment (KTA) and may be a valuable tool for assessing executive function (EF). There is a lack of age-appropriate assessments for EF in occupational therapy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence and treatment priorities for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) internationally. The materials for this study included a questionnaire developed from literature and that was electronically distributed. Ten individuals from four countries that stretch across three continents completed the questionnaire. The purpose of this study was to explore the social and emotional impact of dysphagia on the lives of adults with dysphagia and their caregivers. Four adults participated in this study. Five narratives were elicited, two from adult caregivers for children, two from an adult who assisted with family members, and one from an adult who experienced dysphagia. The semi-structured interviews conducted with these adults were audio taped and transcribed word for word. They were then member checked for accuracy. Study Design: Randomized, blinded, controlled cross-over trial with each subject receiving both interventions within a seven-day span.

Objective: To determine if differences occurred in resting- or contraction-thickness of the transversus abdominis (TrA) muscle following application of trigger point dry needling (TPN) of the lumbar multifidus (MF) muscle in asymptomatic subjects.

Background and Purpose Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common symptomatic condition experienced by older adults, especially in the overweight population, that affects the knees in particular. This study compares the effectiveness of two progressive exercise protocols (walking and stepping) on function and quality of life in older, overweight women with OA. This study includes self-management training and assesses participant selfperceived efficacy in managing OA.

Subjects This is a quasi-experimental design utilizing 16 women ≥ 50 years of age (60.44 ± 6.04) with a BMI > 25 (34.21 ± 7.28) and radiographic diagnosis of OA in at least one knee.

PURPOSE: The Ages and Stages Questionnaire Third Edition (ASQ-3) is a widely used screening tool designed to identify children who need comprehensive developmental assessment. Its accuracy for identifying children in need of additional motor assessment has not been determined. The purposes of this study were to establish concurrent validity between ASQ-3 gross motor (GM) and fine motor (FM) scores and their corresponding Peabody Developmental Motor Scales Second Edition (PDMS-2) quotients, and to examine the diagnostic accuracy of the ASQ-3 using the PDMS-2 as a gold standard reference test.

The technology and design of lower limb prosthetics have evolved greatly since their introduction. The current study proposed to compare the effects of a conventional pin socket attachment and a vacuum socket attachment for a transtibial amputee. Whereas traditional measurements of gait utilize force plates and camera systems, this study made use of a small tri-axial load cell located at the base of the socket to measure the forces and moments exerted during a regular gait cycle. Background and Purpose: Evidence supports the effectiveness of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) versus a traditional face-to-face teaching model, but little is known regarding the effectiveness of a blended pedagogy. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of a blended learning format in a pathophysiology course for entry-level Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) students, to evaluate their level of satisfaction of a podcast formatted course, and to observe changes in cohort performance over time.
