Risk Factors Associated With Noncontact Time-Loss Lower-Quadrant Injury In Male Collegiate Soccer Players, Jason Brumitt, Amy Engilis, Amber Eubanks, Alma Mattocks, Jennifer Peet, Nathanael Bush

Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy

Introduction: The incidence of time-loss injury in male collegiate soccer players in the United States (US) is 6.4 per 1000 athletic exposures. With thousands of male athletes competing in soccer at the US collegiate level each year, there is the potential for numerous time-loss injuries that may ultimately impact team success. Thus, identifying risk factors for injury is warranted.

Purpose: The primary purpose of this study was to determine if preseason functional performance test (FPT) measures (the standing long jump [SLJ] and single-leg hop [SLH] for distance tests) were associated with an increased risk of a noncontact time-loss lower-quadrant (LQ) …

Functional Performance Deficits Exist In Female Naia Collegiate Athletes With History Of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Jason Brumitt, Amy Engilis

Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy

This study compared preseason measures of standing long jump (SLJ) and single-leg hop (SLH) distances between female collegiate athletes with or without history of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). The data from 45 female collegiate athletes (mean age: 20.6 +- 2.2 years) competing at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes (NAIA) level in three team sports (volleyball, soccer, and basketball) were collected as a subanalysis of measures for a prospective cohort study. There were no differences in SLJ or SLH distances between athletes with or without prior history of low back and/or lower extremity sports injuries. However, female athletes with …

Management Of Charcot–Marie–Tooth Disease: Improving Long-Term Care With A Multidisciplinary Approach, Donald Mccorquodale, Evan M. Pucillo, Nicholas E. Johnson Jan 2016

Management Of Charcot–Marie–Tooth Disease: Improving Long-Term Care With A Multidisciplinary Approach, Donald Mccorquodale, Evan M. Pucillo, Nicholas E. Johnson

Physical Therapy Collection

Charcot–Marie–Tooth (CMT) disease is the most common inherited neuropathy and one of the most common inherited diseases in humans. The diagnosis of CMT is traditionally made by the neurologic specialist, yet the optimal management of CMT patients includes genetic counselors, physical and occupational therapists, physiatrists, orthotists, mental health providers, and community resources. Rapidly developing genetic discoveries and novel gene discovery techniques continue to add a growing number of genetic subtypes of CMT. The first large clinical natural history and therapeutic trials have added to our knowledge of each CMT subtype and revealed how CMT impacts patient quality of life. In …

Validity Of The Promis Physical Performance Scale In Determining Frailty And Physical Ability In Community-Dwelling Elderly, Jeff Houck, Tomoko Iwanaga, Christine Kieu, Keegan Lerma, Chelan Murasaki, Tawny Souza Jan 2016

Validity Of The Promis Physical Performance Scale In Determining Frailty And Physical Ability In Community-Dwelling Elderly, Jeff Houck, Tomoko Iwanaga, Christine Kieu, Keegan Lerma, Chelan Murasaki, Tawny Souza

Student-Faculty Research - College of Physical Therapy

In many clinical settings, therapists are continuously seeking efficient and valid assessments for older adults to determine their physical abilities and functional status. The Patient Reported Outcome Instrument System (PROMIS) is a newly developed computer adapted test (CAT) that is being incorporated into electronic medical records and has been reported to assess a person’s physical function. The current gold standard to assess different levels of frailty and physical function in older individuals is the Modified Physical Performance Test (mPPT). However, the mPPT is a lengthy performance based outcome measure that takes time to administer. The purpose of this study is …

The Use Of The Modified Vestibular Activities Of Daily Living Scale In The Examination Of Older Adults, Lauren Calvert, Shane Durando, Bethany Nguyen, Gregory Schuft, Luke Snelling, Theresa Raudsepp, Cindy Zablotny

Student-Faculty Research - College of Physical Therapy

•30-60% community dwelling older adults fall each year, which is the leading cause of injury, death, and traumatic hospital admissions in the elderly.1 This costs the U.S. health care system $20-30 billion per year.2 Currently used older adult self-report measures demonstrate poor responsiveness3, thus failing to detect a decline in function on early enough for preventative physical therapy intervention.

•The Vestibular Activities of Daily Living Scale (VADL) is a self-report measure developed to determine activity & participation restrictions in patients with vestbular dysfunction. This scale clearly delineates important tasks and categories of independence, which would be applicable to the assessment …

Can The Nordic Hamstring Test Identify Collegiate Athletes At Risk For A Time-Loss Hamstring Injury?, Nathanael Bush, Erica Haessler, Jennifer Peet, Lisa Koslicki, Jake Watson, Jason Brumitt Jan 2016

Can The Nordic Hamstring Test Identify Collegiate Athletes At Risk For A Time-Loss Hamstring Injury?, Nathanael Bush, Erica Haessler, Jennifer Peet, Lisa Koslicki, Jake Watson, Jason Brumitt

Student-Faculty Research - College of Physical Therapy

Why Nordic Hamstring?

  • Hamstrings are the most commonly injured muscle in sprinting and

kicking sports (soccer, football and rugby).

  • Recurrent hamstring injuries lead to longer time loss than the original injury.

  • Despite the presence of preventa- tive programs, research has not yet documented an effective, low-cost, widely accessible test to determine hamstring injury risk.

Examining The Lived Experiences Of Families Who Have Adopted Children And Received Occupational Therapy Services, David Simpson Jan 2016

Examining The Lived Experiences Of Families Who Have Adopted Children And Received Occupational Therapy Services, David Simpson

Online Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: This qualitative descriptive study focused on the experiences of families who have adopted children from different countries and placed them in occupational therapy services.

Method: Three different sets of parents were interviewed to gather data on the adoption process and on their experiences with receiving services from an OT. Each interview was conducted either with one or both parents present. Only one interview was conducted with each family.

Discussion: While families often have quality experiences working with an OT and observe improvements in their children, some families do not receive quality services. This is due to lack of communication …

An Occupation Based Practice Educational Program Model Implementing Online Learning, Kristina K. Elam Jan 2016

An Occupation Based Practice Educational Program Model Implementing Online Learning, Kristina K. Elam

Occupational Therapy Doctorate Capstone Projects

Background: Due to numerous changes in reimbursement, healthcare delivery and the field of occupational therapy in recent years, the health care arena is now driven by efforts to improve the quality and cost effectiveness of interventions. Therapists, specifically, are challenged by multiple factors, particularly cost-containment, that influences their ability to deliver occupational therapy services. However, in an attempt to promote best practice, occupational therapists must incorporate occupation-based interventions into daily treatment in all practice settings. Occupation-based activities are defined as activities that allow clients to engage in valued occupations in their own context (Rogers, 2007).

Purpose: This program development model …

Predictors Of Prolonged Recovery From Concussion, Patrick W. Riley Jan 2016

Predictors Of Prolonged Recovery From Concussion, Patrick W. Riley

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

• Sport-related concussion has been thrust to the forefront of medicine in recent years.

• A high degree of variability in clinical presentation and length of recovery has made management of this condition difficult.

• This review examines whether pre-existing risk factors or sign and symptom based variables exist to reliably predict a patient’s likelihood to experience a protracted recovery from concussion.

• The review of literature revealed heterogeneous results.

• This is due, in part, to the variability in the definition of prolonged recovery, ranging from seven to 90 days. Despite this variability, several factors emerged as having useful …

Helmet Therapy Vs. Conservative Therapy For The Treatment Of Positional Skull Deformations, Whitney Thompson Jan 2016

Helmet Therapy Vs. Conservative Therapy For The Treatment Of Positional Skull Deformations, Whitney Thompson

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

• Plagiocephaly and brachycephaly are skull deformations that occur in nearly half of all infants. These deformities are present at birth or can develop shortly after birth due to head positioning while lying supine. Depending on the severity of the deformity, infants may develop negative long-term developmental outcomes. There are generally two ways to treat such patients; repositioning or with use of orthotics (helmet therapy).

• A study of systematic reviews and cohort studies was completed to determine if orthotics (helmet) therapy is significantly more effective than repositioning therapy.

• The study indicated that infants diagnosed with moderate to severe …

Post Total Knee Arthroplasty Protocol Adaptations: A Case Study, Ashley Sebelius

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Background and Purpose: Osteoarthritis (OA) is the largest source of physical disability in the United States and the joint most commonly affected by OA is the knee. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is frequently implemented as a treatment for knee OA There is research that anxiety affects the patient's outcomes following total joint arthroplasty, but nothing to suggest how to specifically manage it. The purpose of this scholarly report is to discuss the physical therapy (PT) of a patient post TKA and how modifications to PT intervention were needed due to other medical and emotional issues.

Case Description: Patient …

Total Knee Arthroplasty And Iliotibial Band Syndrome: A Case Report, Brandon James Moeller Jan 2016

Total Knee Arthroplasty And Iliotibial Band Syndrome: A Case Report, Brandon James Moeller

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Background and Purpose: Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) is one of the most common joint replacements performed in orthopedic medicine. The decision to replace a knee is made through evaluation by an orthopedic surgeon, imaging of the joint, clinical presentation, and the patient's individual needs and desires. Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is a soft tissue dysfunction that can present as pain and tenderness in the hip, thigh, or knee. It primarily stems from rubbing or friction of the IT Band at the lateral femoral condyle. Pain caused by knee degeneration and pain from ITBS can have similar presentations and deserves …
