Injury History In The Collegiate Equestrian Athlete: Part I: Mechanism Of Injury, Demographic Data And Spinal Injury, Michael L. Pilato, Timothy Henry, Drussila Malavase
Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association
ABSTRACT
Purpose: Equestrian sports are known to have a high risk and rate of injury. While there is injury data available on acute injuries in the equestrian population, it is of a general nature. Within that data appears to be a lack of information on the collegiate equestrian athlete. Thus, the purpose of the current study and this analysis is to describe the demographics and incidence of spinal injuries found in intercollegiate equestrian athlete. Method: A survey was developed with input from each author and implemented in Mach forms. It was sent to 43 equestrian coaches in the Eastern United …

Examining The Experiences Of Athletic Trainers As They Transition Into Their First Full-Time Position, Stephanie M. Mazerolle, Mclain Whitney, Christy Eason
Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association
Transition to clinical practice is an important topic in athletic training, as it can be a period of time that presents challenges for the athletic trainer. Most of the research pertaining to transition to practice focuses on the skills and knowledge necessary for clinical practice, yet we know that stress can manifest from not only being an independent practitioner but also from learning how to balance one’s roles. We wanted to understand the perspective of today’s novice athletic trainers and how they feel in their first full-time position, specifically relating to their professional development and establishment or maintenance of work-life …

A qualitative research study was conducted to justify and promote occupational therapy's involvement within the home evaluation and home modification process. A resource reference manual was constructed following a systematic literal review where three key areas were identified as areas of interest; the impact of home modifications on participation and 3 performance within the home setting, occupational therapy's implementation of home modifications, and fall prevention with home modifications. With the results of the literature review supporting the involvement of occupational therapists within the home evaluation and home modification process, three objectives where identified to guide the study. These three objectives …
Factors Influencing Distribution Of Prosthetic Devices In Iran: An Economic Analysis, Sarah Tensen
Factors Influencing Distribution Of Prosthetic Devices In Iran: An Economic Analysis, Sarah Tensen
Virginias Collegiate Honors Council Conference
An estimated 177,622 Iranians have suffered an injury resulting in amputation. Prosthetic devices in Iran are scarce due to wealth disparity, wars, and lack of vital resources. Without prosthetic devices, amputees face unemployment, homelessness, a lowered self-esteem and cannot fully participate in society. I examined economic factors influencing the distribution of prosthetic devices and reviewed articles that focus on healthcare costs, distributions and services, relationships between Iran and other countries, etiology of amputation to find a solution for the prosthetic distribution issues. I concluded issues resulted from high costs, unequal distributions of wealth and resources, unsafe conditions, and a deficit …

High Salt Intake Augments Excitability Of Pvn Neurons In Rats: Role Of The Endoplasmic Reticulum Ca2+ Store, Robert A. Larsen, Andrew D. Chapp, Le Gui, Michael J. Huber, Zixi Jack Cheng, Zhiying Shan, Qing-Hui Chen
Department of Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology Publications
High salt (HS) intake sensitizes central autonomic circuitry leading to sympathoexcitation. However, its underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. We hypothesized that inhibition of PVN endoplasmic reticulum (ER) Ca2+ store function would augment PVN neuronal excitability and sympathetic nerve activity (SNA). We further hypothesized that a 2% (NaCl) HS diet for 5 weeks would reduce ER Ca2+ store function and increase excitability of PVN neurons with axon projections to the rostral ventrolateral medulla (PVN-RVLM) identified by retrograde label. PVN microinjection of the ER Ca2+ ATPase inhibitor thapsigargin (TG) increased SNA and mean arterial pressure (MAP) in a …

Research Round-up: Cancer survivors frequently experience cancer treatment–related functional impairments and disability. While a growing body of evidence supports the effectiveness of rehabilitation interventions for these individuals, there are significant gaps in the existing literature and no interdisciplinary agreement on the priorities for cancer rehabilitation research. In 2016, the Oncology Section revised its strategic plan and set an objective to create an oncology rehabilitation research agenda for the physical therapy (PT) profession. To achieve this goal, the scope of the agenda, a development and review process, and dissemination plan need to be developed.

Educational And Practice Standard Differences Between Third World Physiotherapy And First World Physical Therapy, Elizabeth Egan
Honors Senior Capstone Projects
In the medical field, physical therapists or physiotherapists as many countries outside the United States refer to the profession as, are “highly-educated, licensed health care professionals who can help patients reduce pain and improve or restore mobility...” Physical therapists/physiotherapists are responsible for teaching patients how to prevent or manage their condition so that they will achieve long-term health benefits. Physical therapists/physiotherapists do this by examining each individual and developing a plan, using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability. In addition, PTs work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility before …

Rehabilitation For Surgically Repaired Acetabular Labrum, Courtney Roberts, H Dean, S Holland
Thinking Matters Symposium Archive
Acetabular labral tears were once thought to be an uncommon injury. With advancements in modern medicine such as improvements in imaging technologies and arthroscopy techniques, hip and groin pain associated with an ALT is less likely to be missed or go un-diagnosed. With the growing prevalence, it is important for athletic trainers and physical therapists to have a protocol to follow for rehabilitation. The purpose of our research was to investigate treatment strategies for surgically repaired acetabular labral tears, and to develop a exercise protocol for a young athlete from the acute phase of injury through return-to-sport. This will assist …
