Free clinics provide free or reduced-fee healthcare services for uninsured, underserved, and marginalized populations. Free clinics may be the only source of primary care for socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals lacking health insurance. This literature review was conducted to identify the role misinformation and disinformation plays on the rates of vaccine hesitancy and vaccine uptake for routine immunization among the child and adult populations of the United States. Fifteen articles between 2018-2024 were extracted from PubMed and Google Scholar databases. As shelter-in-place and social distancing protocol wanes, the risk of common vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) reemerges, especially in populations that have not kept up with routine immunization schedules. This literature review examines the impact of equity-centered approaches on issues affecting U.S. healthcare delivery—multiple databases to identify relevant literature that discussed equity-centered care, associated health disparities, and implementation strategies. Of the 490 search results, ten articles remained after refining the search results to include papers published between 2014-2024 and fit the specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. Age-related deviations to the neuromuscular system negatively impact motor function and performance. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been linked to improvements in the neuromuscular system. The purpose of this study was to determine if tDCS delivered to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) would improve handgrip time-to-failure in adults 60 years old and older. Twenty-five participants completed five maximal voluntary contractions, followed by 20-minutes of a-tDCS or SHAM conditions. Next, participants completed a handgrip time-to-failure task by maximally squeezing an electronic handgrip dynamometer until they could no longer maintain 50% of their maximal voluntary contraction. Background: Rural cancer survivors may face greater challenges receiving survivorship care than urban cancer survivors.

Purpose: To test for rural versus urban inequities and identify other correlates of discussions about cancer survivorship care with healthcare professionals.

Methods: Data are from the 2017 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), which included a cancer survivorship supplement. Adult survivors were asked if they discussed with a healthcare professional 5 components of survivorship care: need for follow-up services, lifestyle/health recommendations, emotional/social needs, long-term side effects, and a summary of treatments received. OBJECTIVE: Due to limited data on homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) in older patients (≥ 70 years) with advanced stage high grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC), we aimed to determine the rates of HRD at diagnosis in this age group.

METHODS: From the Phase 3 trial VELIA the frequency of HRD and BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants (PVs) was compared between younger (< 70 years) and older participants. HRD and somatic(s) BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants (PVs) were determined at diagnosis using Myriad myChoice® CDx and germline(g) BRCA1/2 PVs using Myriad BRACAnalysis CDx®. HRD was defined if a BRCA PV was present, or the genomic instability score (GIS) met threshold (GIS ≥ 33 & ≥ 42 analyzed).

RESULTS: Of 1140 participants, 21% were ≥ 70 years. In total, 26% (n = 298) had a BRCA1/2 PV and HRD, 29% (n = 329) were HRD/BRCA wild-type, 33% (n = 372) non-HRD, and 12% HR-status unknown (n = 141). …

Purpose: Regular assessment of the dental workforce is essential to improve the population's oral health. This analysis aimed to understand the trends in the distribution of dentists and dental hygienists (DHs) in Virginia.

Methods: Annual survey data (2013-2022) of dentists and DHs from the Virginia Department of Health Professions Healthcare Workforce Data Center was used to examine the trends in provider distribution by age, gender, race/ethnicity, and geography across Virginia.

This study employs an instrumental variable approach to examine the impact of female political leadership on women’s experiences of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). It finds that in rural areas with more female leaders, incidents of sexual and psychological IPV increase. The analysis investigates the drivers behind this impact, revealing that entrenched gender norms and expectations, such as a husband’s preference for more sons, may exacerbate IPV. There has been a dramatic rise in pediatric deaths associated with synthetic opioid use, with the most prominent being Fentanyl. This is a retrospective cohort study using data from the National Center for Fatality Review and Prevention with the goal of identifying risk factors that increase the vulnerability of children to Fentanyl ingestion. Ultimately this research may help lead to improved identification of at risk children with the goal of implementation of targeted prevention programming.

Vaccination rates against COVID-19 are lower in rural areas across the country, including SC. This paper highlights the work conducted by Clemson Cooperative Extension Service in SC to increase rural access to COVID-19 testing and vaccine services. Extension Agents engaged in clinical and community partnerships to coordinate COVID-19 vaccine and testing clinics in rural and underserved communities. Agents established 204 test clinics and 220 vaccination clinics. The total number of people tested and vaccinated was 9,331 and 2,037, respectively. The success of this project shows Extension agents can be instrumental in bridging the gap between clinical resources and rural communities.
