Title: Understanding Barriers to Fresh Produce Consumption in Detroit

Abstract:

Background Information:

Detroit has barriers to fresh produce consumption and poor health outcomes related to diet, which necessitate further study. We aim to investigate these barriers by understanding current consumption practices of fresh produce, and provide evidence for future solutions to combat these barriers.

Methods:

Surveys were distributed at two urban garden locations (Wayne State University School of Medicine Medical Student Garden and Wayne Pediatrics Garden) in Midtown, Detroit, to patrons (n=34) receiving fresh produce between March-October 2024. Surveys screened for demographics, transportation, what produce patrons took, if they …

Covid-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Among Arab Americans, Jamil Jomaa, Rouba Ali-Fehmi Mar 2023

Covid-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Among Arab Americans, Jamil Jomaa, Rouba Ali-Fehmi

Medical Student Research Symposium

(1) Background: Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) vaccines have a significant impact on reducing morbidity and mortality from infection. However, vaccine hesitancy remains an obstacle in combating the pandemic. The Arab American (AA) population is understudied; thus, we aimed to explore COVID-19 attitudes within this community. (2) Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. An anonymous online survey was distributed to members of different AA associations and to the community through the snowball method. (3) Results: A total of 1746 participants completed the survey. A total of 92% of respondents reported having received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. A total …

Residential Racial Segregation And Neighborhood Adversity: Associations With Hemoglobin A1c In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes, Zechariah Jean, April Carcone, Deborah Ellis Mar 2023

Residential Racial Segregation And Neighborhood Adversity: Associations With Hemoglobin A1c In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes, Zechariah Jean, April Carcone, Deborah Ellis

Medical Student Research Symposium

Black adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) are at increased risk for disparities in health outcomes. More research is necessary on the effects of neighborhood characteristics such as residential racial segregation (RRS) and neighborhood adversity on health.

149 Black youth with T1D were recruited from seven pediatric diabetes clinics in Detroit and Chicago to participate in a clinical trial to improve diabetes management. RRS was calculated at the census block group level based on US census data using Location Quotients. LQs represented the ratio of patients to total population in the block group compared to the same ratio in the …

Effects Of Michigan Opioid Laws On Prescriber Practices In The Emergency Department, Lydia Ross, Gary Kanner, Claire Pearson Mar 2023

Effects Of Michigan Opioid Laws On Prescriber Practices In The Emergency Department, Lydia Ross, Gary Kanner, Claire Pearson

Medical Student Research Symposium

Introduction: Opiate analgesics (OA) are responsible for more overdose deaths than any other medication class. Michigan is among the states most greatly affected by the opioid epidemic, and in late 2017, the Michigan Opioid Laws were passed in efforts to decrease opioid associated addiction and overdose deaths. This set of laws provides regulation of OA prescriptions and to increase patient awareness of the associated risks of opioid use. These laws collectively require a physician to educate the patient on harms of opiates, provide substance abuse disorder services in the setting of an overdose, establish a relationship with the patient, obtain …

Medical Student Research Symposium

Objective

To characterize management and outcomes of seizures, status epilepticus, and cortical myoclonus in COVID-19, with individual patient data analysis of published literature.

Methods

Systematic literature review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Criteria included new-onset seizures, status epilepticus, and/or cortical myoclonus with concomitant COVID-19. COVID-19 severity was dichotomized into mild and severe cases. Good outcome was defined as discharge without severe deficits, and/or return to baseline.

Results

A total of 105 studies reporting 176 patients (male 56.3%;mean age 47.8,SD 25.6) were included. Status epilepticus occurred in 47 patients (26.7%) and myoclonus in 41 (23.3%). Severe COVID-19 occurred in …

The Effect Of Socioeconomic Status On Patient Outcomes Following Rotator Cuff Repair At Two Hospital Campuses, Bushra Fathima, Emily Lau, Joshua P. Castle, Cassandra Keinath, Chaoyang Chen, Gabriel Burdick, Stephanie J. Muh

Medical Student Research Symposium

INTRODUCTION: To examine the relationship between demographics, socioeconomic status (SES), and patient outcomes after rotator cuff repair (RCR).

METHODS: A retrospective review identified 7564 patients who underwent RCR between 2017 and 2021. Patients were stratified into two groups, urban(U) or suburban(S), based on which campus they underwent surgery. Demographic information, medical comorbidities, SES and other preoperative risk factors were compared. Pre- and postoperative functional outcomes at each location were analyzed. Categorical variables were reported as counts and percentages while continuous variables were reported as means and standard deviations. Chi-square tests were used to compare categorical variables while independent …
