Does Verbal Communication Impairment Affect Quality Of Life In Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Patients?, Jason Michael Duff
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the self-perceived QOL in ALS patients. Literature will be presented on the incidence, prevalence, prognosis, diagnosis and management of ALS, QOL studies for ALS, the role of the multidisciplinary team, the impairments and dysfunction that ALS patients experience, communication issues, and the development of ALS specific instruments to measure QOL. The "bulbar dysfunction" that ALS patients experience in salivation management, speech, and swallowing were examined in detail. The objectives of this research study were to investigate the following hypotheses: 1. QOL will differ among ALS patients with varying levels of speech, swallowing, …
Acoustic Startle At Baseline And During Acute Alcohol Withdrawal In Replicate Mouse Lines Selectively Bred For High Or Low Alcohol Preference, Julia Chester, Gustavo D. Barrenha
Acoustic Startle At Baseline And During Acute Alcohol Withdrawal In Replicate Mouse Lines Selectively Bred For High Or Low Alcohol Preference, Julia Chester, Gustavo D. Barrenha
Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications
Background: Previous data in both rat and mouse genetic models suggest that there is a genetic relationship between acute alcohol withdrawal responses and innate alcohol drinking behavior. The purpose of the present study was to examine whether acute alcohol withdrawal responses, as measured by acoustic startle and prepulse inhibition (PPI) of acoustic startle, may be genetically related to innate differences in alcohol preference in two mouse lines selectively bred for high (HAP1 and HAP2) or low (LAP1 and LAP2) alcohol preference. Line differences in startle responses at baseline, prior to alcohol or saline treatment, were also measured. Methods: Alcohol-naive, male …
The Impact Of College Student Immersion Service Learning Trips On Coping With Stress And Vocational Identity, Brad A. Mills, Richard B. Bersamina, Thomas G. Plante
The Impact Of College Student Immersion Service Learning Trips On Coping With Stress And Vocational Identity, Brad A. Mills, Richard B. Bersamina, Thomas G. Plante
Psychology
This study examined the impact of service learning immersion trips on vocational identity and coping with stress among college students. Fifty-one students (15 males, 36 females) who participated in immersion trips and 76 students (25 males, 51 females) in a non-immersion control group completed a series of questionnaires directly before and immediately after both fall and spring break immersion trips, and during a four-month follow up. Results suggest that, after returning from an immersion trip, students report a greater ability to cope with stress and a somewhat stronger sense of vocational identity relative to students who do not participate in …
Practical Approaches To Treating Patients With Bipolar Disorder, Jane E. Neu, Susan M. Denisco
Practical Approaches To Treating Patients With Bipolar Disorder, Jane E. Neu, Susan M. Denisco
Nursing Faculty Publications
Many patients present to a primary care setting with symptoms of a mood disorder. These symptoms may be indicative of an anxiety disorder or a depressive disorder, but they may also represent bipolar disorder, which is more common than many practitioners think. Correctly diagnosing bipolar disorder can be complex, because patients tend to seek treatment when they are experiencing the symptoms of depression or anxiety rather than mania or hypomania. Comorbid disorders such as substance abuse and anxiety disorders may complicate the clinical presentation. Failing to correctly diagnose bipolar disorder can have serious consequences in terms of patients' morbidity and …
Forced Medication And The Need To Protect The Rights Of The Mentally Ill Criminal Defendant, Emily C. Lieberman
Forced Medication And The Need To Protect The Rights Of The Mentally Ill Criminal Defendant, Emily C. Lieberman
Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal
The note argues that the current legal framework for forcibly medicating mentally ill criminal defendants, particularly pre-trial detainees, often violates their constitutional rights. It contends that the reliance on "dangerousness" as a criterion for forced medication is too vague and easily abused, leading to inconsistent and unconstitutional applications. The analysis advocates for stricter standards, clearer definitions of dangerousness, and heightened judicial scrutiny to protect the rights of mentally ill defendants.
The Prediction Of Antenatal And Postnatal Depression In A Sample Of Western Australian Women, Debbie A. Lien
The Prediction Of Antenatal And Postnatal Depression In A Sample Of Western Australian Women, Debbie A. Lien
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
In Australia, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS; Cox, Holden & Sagovsky, 1987) has been increasingly used to screen for antenatal depression prior to its evaluation on a sample of Australian pregnant women. Also, the identification of predictors associated with antenatal depression has been neglected relative to the research focus on postpartum depression. An aim of the study was to evaluate the antenatal screening properties of the EPDS against diagnoses of major depression with the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI; Sheehan eta!., 1998). The aims were also to develop predictive models of risk factors associated with antenatal depression as measured …
