Herbal teas and plant-based medicines have been widely used worldwide for their therapeutic and healing qualities. Rosella (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) has various benefits in preventing digestive problems, liver disease, fever, and others. Ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) or known as jahe in Indonesia is believed to benefit numerous clinical conditions linked to oxidative stress, including pancreatitis, hypertension, diabetic kidney disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and tumor development. They have been utilized in traditional medical practice to treat conditions such as fever, nausea, and headaches. In this study, we aimed to determine the antioxidant activities of rosella flower tea, ginger tea, and …

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that exhibited great expansion all over the world. It is becoming an epidemic disease adding a major burden to the health care system, particularly in developing countries.
Methods: The plant under investigation in the current study Phragmanthera austroarabica A. G. Mill and J. A. Nyberg is traditionally used in Saudi Arabia for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. The methanolic extract (200 mg/kg) of the plant and pure gallic acid (40 mg/kg), a major metabolite of the plant, as well as their silver nanoparticle formulae (AgNPs) were evaluated for their antidiabetic activity.

This study investigates the phytochemical contents, antioxidants and cytotoxic activities of Lannea egregia Engl. & K. Krause stem bark extracts. Secondary metabolites were extracted using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol by successive maceration. The concentrated extracts were subjected to preliminary phytochemical screening using standard procedures. The crude flavonoid was obtained from the plant material using Harborne’s method and then profiled using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The antioxidant activities of the plant extract were assessed using reducing power assay and DPPH scavenging activity, while the cytotoxic activity was determined using the brine shrimp lethality assay. The crude extract of n-hexane or …

The Benefits Of Astaxanthin To Improve Pain Relief In Patients With Painful Diabetic Neuropathy: An Open-Label, Randomized Controlled Trial, Rizaldy Taslim Pinzon, Mary Rose Angelina Budi Harsana
Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research
Treatment of diabetic neuropathy is still carried out by providing symptomatic therapy, which only improves ± 50% of the total symptoms felt by patients, but does not tackle the underlying causes of the disease. Astaxanthin is a potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic carotenoid that could be an additional treatment option. We aimed to measure the effectiveness of administering astaxanthin as an additional therapy to improve the impact of pain and discomfort experienced daily by diabetes mellitus patients with painful diabetic neuropathy. We conducted a randomized experimental study with an open label design of 36 patients who had been diagnosed with …

Macroalgae are abundant sources of bioactive polysaccharides and prospective candidates for effective and non-toxic substances. This study aims to preliminary characterize and determine the in vitro antioxidant activity and cancer cell growth inhibitory activity against human lung adenocarcinoma cell (A549) of the polysaccharide from an invasive green alga, Caulerpa taxifolia. Crude polysaccharide (CP) was extracted from the dried algal sample of C. taxifolia by hot water extraction followed by absolute ethanol precipitation. CP was subjected to preliminary chemical characterization, including protein, carbohydrate, and sulfate content analysis by Kjeldahl titrimetry, acid hydrolysis, gravimetry, and ashing-acid water digestion ion chromatography, respectively. …

The declining ability of tissues to repair or replace themselves and maintain their structure and normal function is called aging. Aging is caused by free radical that can induce the activation of elastase and collagenase. Ageratum conyzoides (L.) or known as Babadotan is a medicinal plant that has been reported to be a good source of antioxidants that also inhibit aging process. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the antioxidant and antiaging properties of Babadotan Ethanolic Extract (BEE). Franswoth method was used to determine the phytochemical assay of BEE. Measurement of 2,2-diphenyl 1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenger was used for …

Drying is the most important step to keep the compound stability in simplicia. The objective of this research is to know the effect of drying methods on antioxidant activity in Melastoma malabathricum L. The drying methods tested were oven-drying at 40°C, direct sunlight, indirect sunlight, air-drying at ± 25°C and fresh samples as control. Result revealed that the drying methods of simplicia were significant differences for antioxidant activity in Melastoma malabathricum L. (p < 0,05). Drying method that has the highest antioxidant activity was by air-drying at ± 25°C is 54.60 %.

Green chemistry aspect is the chemical approach that has been studied in the past two decade. One of the principles is the development of green synthesis process that is friendly for the environment. This research showed that papain can be used as catalyst for Knoevenagel reaction with 3 kinds of substituted-benzaldehyde and malononitrile as substrates in aqueous medium. The best reaction condition with 80% yield was reached by utilizing of 25 mg papain/mmol substrate. Reaction was conducted at ambient temperature and pressure for 30 min. Products were as yellowish to yellow needle crystals and successfully characterized by melting point, UV-Vis, …

Acetaminophen, also known as APAP or paracetamol, is one of the most widely used analgesics (pain reliever) and antipyretics (fever reducer). According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, currently there are 235 approved prescription and over-the-counter drug products containing acetaminophen as an active ingredient. When used as directed, acetaminophen is very safe and effective; however when taken in excess or ingested with alcohol hepatotoxicity and irreversible liver damage can arise. In addition to well known use pain relief and fever reduction, recent laboratory and pre-clinical studies have demonstrated that acetaminophen may also have beneficial effects on blood glucose levels, …
