Vitamin D Level Testing In An Urban Midwest Clinic: To Test Or Not To Test?, Daniel Mundt, Marianne Klumph, Kayla Heslin, Wajih Askar

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is significantly higher among urban populations in the U.S. Midwest, with African Americans being disproportionately affected. There is ongoing debate surrounding who and how often individuals should be screened for VDD. This study aimed to understand the prevalence of VDD, associated risk factors, and discrepancies in testing at an urban-based internal medicine residency clinic. Data were retrospectively collected on all adult patients seen by the clinic during 2018 and descriptive statistical analysis performed. Among 3976 total patients (mean age: 53 years), 18% (n = 698) had vitamin D levels analyzed, with deficiency found in 71% of …

A Quantitative Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Various Essential Oils Against The Sars Cov-2 Virus, Elizabeth Wagstaff, Chandrelyn Kraczek, Jack Brandon Lopez

Annual Research Symposium

A poster presentation and abstract for the Roseman Symposium. The project focuses on testing 3 essential oil blends and two disinfectants containing an essential oil blend against SARS CoV-2 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The project procedure involves plaque assays, disinfection, and neutralization techniques.

Antimicrobial And Cytotoxic Activities Of Ascidian Species Collected From Egyptian Coasts, Amany Metwally, Sarah Ali Shalaby, Tarek Ahmed Temraz, Mohammed Ismail Ahmed Mar 2022

Antimicrobial And Cytotoxic Activities Of Ascidian Species Collected From Egyptian Coasts, Amany Metwally, Sarah Ali Shalaby, Tarek Ahmed Temraz, Mohammed Ismail Ahmed

Bulletin of Faculty of Pharmacy Cairo University

Discovering novel drugs for curing cancer and infectious diseases is the prime interest of several research areas now. Marine sessile invertebrates have produced secondary metabolites, a lot of which are utilized as novel pharmaceutical agents with diverse effects whether anti-cancer or anti-microbial. Ascidians are marine sessile animals (phylum: Chordata, class: Ascidiacea). Various anti-cancer, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial components are obtained from different bioactive compounds belonging to ascidian species and are in different stages of clinical trials. In this study, five ascidian species which are Polyclinum constellatum, Botryllus eilatensis, Didemnum sp., Symplegma rubra, and Styela canopus were collected from two coastal sites …

Antidiabetic Activity And In Silico Molecular Docking Of Polyphenols From Ammannia Baccifera L. Subsp. Aegyptiaca (Willd.) Koehne Waste: Structure Elucidation Of Undescribed Acylated Flavonol Diglucoside, Noha Swilam, Mahmoud Nawwar, Rasha Radwan, Eman Mostafa Feb 2022

Antidiabetic Activity And In Silico Molecular Docking Of Polyphenols From Ammannia Baccifera L. Subsp. Aegyptiaca (Willd.) Koehne Waste: Structure Elucidation Of Undescribed Acylated Flavonol Diglucoside, Noha Swilam, Mahmoud Nawwar, Rasha Radwan, Eman Mostafa

Pharmacy

Chemical investigation of the aerial parts of Ammania aegyptiaca ethanol extract (AEEE) showed high concentrations of polyphenol and flavonoid content, with notable antioxidant activity. Undescribed acylated diglucoside flavonol myricetin 3-O-β-4C1-(600-O-galloyl glucopyranoside) 7-Oβ-4C1-glucopyranoside (MGGG) was isolated from the aerial parts of AEEE, along with four known polyphenols that had not been characterized previously from AEEE. The inhibitory effects of MGGG, AEEE, and all compounds against α-amylase, pancreatic lipase and β-glucosidase were assessed. In addition, molecular docking was used to determine the inhibition of digestive enzymes, and this confirmed that the MGGG interacted strongly with the active site residues of these enzymes, …

Healing Through Mother Earth, Taylor A. Russell

Dance (MFA) Theses

This thesis deals with mental health, with a focus on Black women. Historically, Black women are often so compromised, being constant caregivers and helping everyone else, that they forget to help themselves, not having the time and financial means to do so. If we go back in the time of slavery, many Black women were taking care of slave owners' children and suckling the white women’s babies instead of their own. By the time they got home and after diligently caring for other people’s children they were focused on their own children, who they had been away from for hours …

Studies Toward The Development Of An Improved Countermeasure For Synthetic Opioid Overdose, Sidnee L. Hedrick Jan 2022

Studies Toward The Development Of An Improved Countermeasure For Synthetic Opioid Overdose, Sidnee L. Hedrick

Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacy

One of the most prominent opioid analgesics in the United States is the high potency agonist fentanyl. It is used in the treatment of acute and chronic pain and as an anesthetic adjuvant. When used inappropriately, however, ingestion of just a few milligrams of fentanyl or other synthetic opioid can cause opioid-induced respiratory depression (OIRD), often leading to death. Currently, the treatment of choice for OIRD is the opioid receptor antagonist naloxone. Recent reports, however, suggest that higher doses or repeated dosing of naloxone (due to recurrence of respiratory depression) may be required to fully reverse fentanyl-induced respiratory depression, rendering …

Phytochemical Constituents Of Aquilaria Malaccensis Leaf Extract And Their Anti-Inflammatory Activity Against Lps/Ifn-Γ-Stimulated Raw 264.7 Cell Line, Eman Ramadan, Manar A. Eissa, Yumi Z. H-Y Hashim, Dina M. El-Kersh Jan 2022

Phytochemical Constituents Of Aquilaria Malaccensis Leaf Extract And Their Anti-Inflammatory Activity Against Lps/Ifn-Γ-Stimulated Raw 264.7 Cell Line, Eman Ramadan, Manar A. Eissa, Yumi Z. H-Y Hashim, Dina M. El-Kersh

Pharmacy

This study aims to identify the major phytochemical constituents in Aquilaria malaccensis (Thymelaeaceae) ethanolic leaf extract (ALEX-M) and elucidate their ability to suppress nitric oxide (NO) production from a murine macrophage-like cell line (RAW 264.7) stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and interferon-γ (IFN-γ). Dichloromethane (DCM) and ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fractions of ALEX-M were subjected to column chromatography. Eight known compounds were isolated for the first time from this species. Compounds were identified using spectroscopic techniques (IR, UV, HRESIMS, and 1D and 2D NMR). Anti-inflammatory activity of both extract and isolated compounds were investigated in vitro. The fractions offered the isolation of …
