Geographical And Anatomical Microbiome Variation In Invasive Green Iguanas (Iguana Iguana), Amanda A. Diaz
Geographical And Anatomical Microbiome Variation In Invasive Green Iguanas (Iguana Iguana), Amanda A. Diaz
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
The common green iguana (Iguana iguana) was introduced to South Florida in 1965 and has since been an especially pernicious threat both environmentally and economically. This highly invasive species is also expanding in range and populations at an astonishing rate. Understanding how this reptile is able to adapt and thrive in novel environments is of imperative need in order to begin managing their disruptive populations. Notwithstanding their negative impacts and significance, the microbiome of wild populations has not yet been characterized. Here, using 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing, this study is the first to characterize the microbiome composition …
Host, Microbiome, And Parasite: How Apicomplexan Microorganisms Interact With Gut Microbiota, Senia Bu, Andrew T. Ozga
Host, Microbiome, And Parasite: How Apicomplexan Microorganisms Interact With Gut Microbiota, Senia Bu, Andrew T. Ozga
Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal
The gut microbiome, a complex ecosystem of microorganisms residing in the human gastrointestinal tract, plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health. It functions in immune system regulation, digestion, and protection against pathogens. Apicomplexan parasites, such as Toxoplasma gondii, Plasmodium spp., and Cryptosporidium spp., are major pathogens that can significantly disrupt the gut microbiota, leading to alterations in microbial composition and function. This review explores the bidirectional interactions between Apicomplexan parasites and the gut microbiome, focusing on how these parasites influence microbial diversity, immune responses, and host metabolism. It examines the mechanisms by which infection-induced inflammation, altered …

Improving Treatment Outcomes For Bacterial Vaginosis By Affecting The Vaginal Microbiome, Aleya Devries, Jyotsna Chawla Assistant Professor, Microbiology, Jackeline Moljo Assistant Professor, Family Medicine
HCA-NSU MD Research Day
Objective: The goal of this review is to educate providers about the importance of maintaining the balance of the vaginal microbiome (VMB) and how modifiable factors may be used to improve treatment outcomes of patients with bacterial vaginosis. Background: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common vaginal infection in women of reproductive age and is treated with Metronidazole, which has a high recurrent infection rate. Preliminary studies highlighted the balance of VMB species affects the development of BV and therapeutic outcomes of Metronidazole. Furthermore, previous studies have described how VMB composition can be shaped by various factors. Methods: Here, we …

Title: Flexor Tenosynovitis of the Wrist and Hand Due to Non-tuberculous Mycobacteria Authors: Mariafe Reyes1,Tatevik Malisetyan1, Skylar Harmon1, Mohammadali M. Shoja, MD1 Gary B. Schwartz, MD1 1Nova Southeastern University Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine, Fort Lauderdale, USA INTRODUCTION: Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are a group of bacteria, including Mycobacterium marinum, Mycobacterium kansasii, and Mycobacterium avium intracellulare (MAI), that usually exist in the soil and water sources. The most common site of infection is the lungs, but extra-pulmonary involvement of the skin and rarely the musculoskeletal (MSK) system does occur, especially the hands and wrists. CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old, …

Sea-Phages Research Opportunity, Sarah Ballarin
Trick to the Treat of Internships and Research
Research opportunity targeted for freshmen and sophomores through the SEA-PHAGES program. The goal of the research is to discover new bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria) to help combat antibiotic resistance. Phage therapy is a promising alternative to conventional antibiotics. Phages have also been widely used in the food industry to prevent microbial growth on certain foods and are currently being explored as a method for bioremediation of oil spills and wastewater treatment.
Last year, my research team discovered two new bacteriophages: Genamy16 and NovaSharks that were able to infect the bacteria Gordonia rubripertincta. These phages can possibly be used for …

The mode of childbirth in humans (vaginal or cesarean section) is considered to be one of the most influential factors in the development of gut microbiota of an infant. A microbiome is defined as a collection of microorganisms that are concentrated together in a single location or body site. The genetic material of all microbes, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi, comprises this complex ecosystem. The gut microbiota regulate digestion and strengthen the immune system in humans, helping to maintain homeostasis and are at the early stages of life, dictated by the method of delivery. Vaginal versus cesarean deliveries have increased …
