The Relationship Between Companion Animals And Health Status Among Older Adults Living In The Community, Agnes M. Eytchison

Master's Projects

A study was conducted on 18 older adult pet owners and non-pet owners residing in a mobile home park to determine self-perception of health status and the level of attachment to pets. Self-reported health status was high and equal for both pet owners and non-pet owners. The level of attachment to the pets was also high. Studies have demonstrated human-animal interactions being beneficial to both individuals and families; but for many residents of mobile home parks and common interest developments, such as condominiums and townhouses, rules prevent companion animal ownership. Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs) aware of the benefits of animal …

Investigation Of A Southeastern Community's Knowledge And Intent To Use A Nurse Practitioner, Elizabeth Ann Park

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The concept of the advanced practice nurse was first conceived in the 1960s in an effort to provide patients with adequate primary health care. Changes in the health care delivery system since that time have facilitated this role. The past ten years has seen an increasing number of physicians utilizing nurse practitioners (NPs) in their practices. As physicians consider this alternative, they are interested in knowing how their patients will accept this change.Review of the literature regarding the health care consumer's acceptance of the NP as a health care provider revealed that the majority of the research, thus far, has been …

Integrating Christian Caring In Nursing Curriculum: One School’S Experience, Charlotte Stephenson, Charlotte Ann Thayer Wood, Mary Ann Henriques, Tina L. Magers, Kaye Wilson-Anderson

Faculty Publications - College of Nursing

The link between caring and nursing has been evident since the days of Florence Nightingale. She referred to nursing as an act of charity or "God's work." Nursing within the Judea-Christian tradition was viewed as a mission, ministry or call from God to serve others. Those entering nursing fulfilled a commitment to God through service and care for others. Over time the focus in nursing shifted from the Christian perspective of being "called to be a nurse" to technical and physiological reasons for helping people. Virginia Henderson defined nursing as "that service to an individual that helps him to attain …

Wheels At Camp, Judith A. Medlin Dec 1997

Wheels At Camp, Judith A. Medlin

Master's Projects

Students with special needs are being included into regular education classrooms in increasing numbers. Teachers in these classrooms are often reluctant to include students with special needs on overnight field trips. This reluctance stems from the teacher's concern for the associated responsibilities. The purpose of this project is to demonstrate the process developed and used to successfully send a fully included student with disabilities to camp with his non-disabled peers. Dorthea Orem' s theory of nursing provided the conceptual framework for this case example. Overnight field trips (e.g., science camp) that are fun and safe learning experiences for the student …

From Welfare To What?: The Limitations Of Low-Income Work, Lande Ajose Sep 1997

From Welfare To What?: The Limitations Of Low-Income Work, Lande Ajose

New England Journal of Public Policy

The premise of the welfare law enacted by Congress is that people living in poverty could vastly improve their economic status if only they were employed. The author argues that economic security for welfare recipients will not be realized simply by increasing the labor-force attachment. Home health aides comprise an occupation that could absorb many of the large pool of workers expected to join the labor market because demand for their services is high and barriers to entry are low. However, as this survey shows, the home health field offers limited promise to welfare recipients because, significantly for women rolling …

Nursing: A New Day, A New Way, Lin Zhan, Jane Cloutterback Sep 1997

Nursing: A New Day, A New Way, Lin Zhan, Jane Cloutterback

New England Journal of Public Policy

The U.S. health care environment is changing rapidly. Its structure, financing, and delivery are being reconfigured toward an integrated system based on managed care. Increasingly, national interest in health promotion and disease prevention is moving care away from a disease-oriented, institutionally based model to a population-focused, wellness-oriented, and community-based system. Health care consumers are diversifying in age, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. The approach emerging from these changes and others requires nursing to rethink, redesign, and retool its workforce to meet new challenges. This article analyzes nursing education, practice, and operations. The authors discuss the dilemmas and complexity of developing an …

An Hiv/Aids Educational Workshop For Adolescents, Sharron Anne Daggett May 1997

An Hiv/Aids Educational Workshop For Adolescents, Sharron Anne Daggett

Master's Projects

Adolescents are threatened with infection by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (IIlV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Data reveal that the number of adolescents infected with HIV is increasing. Adolescent risk taking behaviors and lack of preventive education are major factors associated with this rise. Family nurse practitioners (FNPs) who care for adolescents have a duty to offer their patients preventive health care. Adolescents can participate by attending HN and AIDS prevention workshops that will present them with facts. Adolescents who attend these workshops will gain the knowledge to protect themselves against mv and AIDS. The workshop in this study was …

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Direct Observed Therapy Program With Vietnamese Tuberculosis Patients, Jacqueline T. Mac Jan 1997

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Direct Observed Therapy Program With Vietnamese Tuberculosis Patients, Jacqueline T. Mac

Master's Projects

Tuberculosis (TB) has long been recognized as a major public health problem. The rate of TB is high in immigrants and the frequency of drug resistance is increasing. A major reason for the development of resistant infections as well as relapse is poor adherence to TB treatment. In response to this problem, direct observed therapy (DOT) was introduced to the TB program in Santa Clara County in 1993. The purpose of this study is to compare the completion rates, relapse rates, and sputum conversion rates between a DOT group and a non-DOT group of Vietnamese TB patients. A chart review …
