Quality of Discharge Teaching Scale

The Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale, Quality of Discharge Teaching Scale, and Post-Discharge Coping Difficulty Scale were developed by Dr. Marianne Weiss to measure nurse-sensitive discharge care processes and patient outcomes. Three versions of the scales were developed concurrently for different patient populations – Adult medical-surgical patients, Parents of hospitalized children, and Postpartum Patient mothers (see Weiss & Piacentine, 2006, Weiss et al., 2007, and Bobay et al., 2018 for description of the development and initial testing). Additional scales and information about translation rights are located at Marquette Nursing.

Using Video Simulation To Enhance Rn-Pca Communication, Boris Chang Dec 2014

Using Video Simulation To Enhance Rn-Pca Communication, Boris Chang

Master's Projects and Capstones

The purpose of this project was to develop a video simulation exercise to enhance communication between Registered Nurses (RNs) and Patient Care Assistants (PCAs). From a general microsystem assessment initially performed on an urban hospital medical-surgical unit, 75% of respondents noted that the most pertinent issue to address was improving communication between RNs and PCAs. Literature review of evidence-based practices found several studies that support the use of human clinical simulation to promote teamwork and interdisciplinary communication. RNs (n = 24) and PCAs (n = 9) were then individually interviewed with surveys and responses scored based on the …

Relocation Of Orc To Or2, Svetlana N. Schopp

Master's Projects and Capstones

The goal of this Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) internship project was to maintain safety and quality of care of obstetric (OB) patients undergoing Cesarean Sections (C/S) after operating room for cesarean sections (ORC) is relocated from obstetric unit to the main operating room (OR). The microsystem will accomplish this through effective teamwork, clear interdisciplinary communication, collaboration, and standardization of processes involved. The institution is a not for profit rural health care facility and is a designated Critical Access Hospital; it is located in Northern California. A general obligation bond was passed in 2007 to fund seismic upgrades. Old OB unit …

La Cesárea Y El Parto Natural: Las Opiniones De Profesionales De La Salud En La Provincia De Buenos Aires / Cesarean Section And Natural Birth: The Opinions Of Health Provinces In The Province Of Buenos Aires, Jacqueline Chipkin

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Introduction: The ways in which women of society give birth have the power to influence maternal-infant health and shape the economy of the healthcare system. Today, the rates of cesarean sections are increasing throughout the world. In Argentina, on average, more than 35% of pregnant women received cesarean sections in 2008, with large differences observed in the rates between the public and private health sectors. The World Health Organization (WHO) has established that healthcare systems should only employ a cesarean section if labor cannot progress safely. According to this standard, the organization estimates that cesarean sections should only be utilized …

The Effect Of Telephone Follow-Up On Pain Experienced By Patients After Knee Replacement Surgery, Laurie J. Jones May 2014

The Effect Of Telephone Follow-Up On Pain Experienced By Patients After Knee Replacement Surgery, Laurie J. Jones

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Hospital length of stays are decreasing throughout the U.S. in an effort to contain healthcare costs, but these measures can be detrimental to patients. Those who get knee replacement surgery are finding their length of stay reduced from an average of 3 to 4 days to 24 to 48 hours, which can affect pain control and interfere with rehabilitation and recovery. This affects many people, as more than 632,000 knee replacements occur each year (American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, 2008). The purpose of this evidence-based project was to evaluate the effect of telephone follow-up on pain experienced by knee replacement …

Transforming The Preoperative Patient Education Experience, Hilary Joachim Jan 2014

Transforming The Preoperative Patient Education Experience, Hilary Joachim

Theses and Graduate Projects

In 2009 a large Midwestern healthcare institution introduced preoperative education classes for orthopedic patients undergoing joint replacement surgery to better prepare them for surgery and promote a timely discharge from the hospital. According to literature findings, preoperative patient education decreases patient anxiety, improves pain control, and decreases length of stay in the hospital. While length of stay for joint replacement patients within this healthcare instifution decreased, it was difficult to pinpoint the effect of the educational classes due to other simultaneous changes in postoperative orthopedic care, such as earlier mobilization of patients. Through an analysis of class attendance, it was …

Novel Oral Anticoagulants: Bedrest And Bleeding In Patients Undergoing Atrial Fibrillation Catheter Ablation, Lynn Mcwhirter Jan 2014

Novel Oral Anticoagulants: Bedrest And Bleeding In Patients Undergoing Atrial Fibrillation Catheter Ablation, Lynn Mcwhirter

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common cardiac arrhythmia in persons over age 65, is associated with an increased stroke risk necessitating the need for long-term oral anticoagulation for risk reduction. With the introduction of direct thrombin and factor Xa inhibitors in the US since 2010, these novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs) are increasingly being prescribed, replacing the use of warfarin, a vitamin K antagonist. AF catheter ablation (CA), an elective procedure requiring femoral vascular access is a treatment for drug refractory and persistent AF. Bedrest, limb immobilization, and limited head of bed elevation are nursing measures utilized following femoral venous, and …

Improving Anesthesia Professional Adherence To Hand Hygiene, Martha E. Seneca Jan 2014

Improving Anesthesia Professional Adherence To Hand Hygiene, Martha E. Seneca

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Performance of hand hygiene is among the most effective means of preventing healthcare associated infections (HAI) among patients. Deaths resulting from HAIs are one of the top ten leading causes of death in the United States. Any improvement in the frequency of hand hygiene among healthcare professionals may have a direct impact on patient mortality and associated costs. While anesthesia professionals have been found to have low rates of hand hygiene adherence, few targeted studies seeking to improve hand hygiene adherence among this group exist. Studies conducted to improve hand hygiene among health care professionals have reported limited improvement, with …

Intraosseous Vascular Access For Alert Patients, Stacie Hunsaker Nov 2013

Intraosseous Vascular Access For Alert Patients, Stacie Hunsaker

Faculty Publications

Nurses are often faced with the challenge of starting an IV line in a patient who is dehydrated, has suffered trauma, or is in shock. Even the efforts of the most skilled clinician may fail, while valuable time is lost. Intraosseous access is a rapid, safe, and effective route for delivering fluids and medications, and is recommended by numerous professional and specialty organizations for both pediatric and adult patients. Yet many clinicians remain unaware of the procedure. This article outlines the procedure and devices used, describes support for use in the literature, and discusses various considerations and nursing implications.

Articles

The use of portable mobile devices has facilitated timely communication among healthcare team members. It's now a common practice for hospital-owned mobile phones to be shared among healthcare employees from shift to shift. Despite the benefit of increased, timely communication between caregivers, sharing mobile devices can lead to the spread of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). This article looks at the efficacy of two types of cleaning products on shared mobile phones carried by RNs at a 489-bed, Magnet-designated, Midwestern regional medical center. The cleaning methods evaluated were 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes and ethyl alcohol wipes.
