Implementing A Nurse-Led Multimodal Pain Management Toolkit To Enhance Recovery After Outpatient Urologic Surgery, Danielle Cirlos-Valles

Purpose To evaluate the impact of a nurse-led multimodal postoperative pain management toolkit on recovery outcomes among adults undergoing same-day urologic surgery.
Design Quality improvement project using a pre–post implementation design in an outpatient perioperative setting.
Methods An evidence-based toolkit grounded in Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) principles was implemented over eight weeks, incorporating scheduled non-opioid analgesics, nonpharmacologic strategies (thermal therapy, guided breathing, early mobilization), standardized patient education, and 24-hour follow-up calls. Outcomes included Visual Analog Scale (VAS) pain scores at discharge and 24 hours, escalation pathway utilization, and nurse knowledge competency. Descriptive statistics and paired t tests were used. …

Toolkit To Prevent Venous Thromboembolism Among Surgical Patients, Carine Wawa

Background: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 900,000 people in the United States are affected annually by venous thromboembolism (VTE) (CDC, 2025). The surgical patient population is vulnerable to VTE due to factors such as immobility, tissue injuries, and inflammatory responses. The lack of standardized protocols for surgical patients causes practice variability among healthcare providers and potentially increases the risk for preventable VTE events.
Methods: A toolkit to prevent VTE was developed utilizing the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) National Quality Measures Clearinghouse (NQMC). A literature review was conducted, reviewed, and graded using the …

Smoking is the number one cause of preventable illness and death in the United States. For patients undergoing cancer treatment, continued tobacco use poses serious risks. In surgical oncology, smoking is associated with poorer treatment outcomes, increased postoperative complications, delayed wound healing, and higher mortality. For patients requiring reconstructive surgery, smoking-related complications can be devastating, sometimes resulting in significant wound complications or loss of the reconstruction. Despite these well-established risks, smoking cessation interventions are not consistently integrated into clinical practice.
To address this gap, a quality improvement project was implemented to strengthen smoking cessation efforts among advanced practice providers (APPs) …

Postoperative pulmonary complications and inconsistent implementation of preventive nursing interventions remain significant challenges on acute care surgical units. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to reduce postoperative respiratory failure, hospital readmissions, and length of stay while improving nursing compliance with evidence-based interventions. A nursing care bundle, RISE—Respiratory therapy (structured, nurse-guided incentive spirometry), Incentivize movement (early ambulation), Sit up (head-of-bed elevation ≥30 degrees), and Eliminate germs (twice-daily oral care)—was implemented on an acute care surgical ward in South Texas. Nursing compliance with the preventative measures and patient outcomes were compared between pre- and post-implementation cohorts. Following implementation, nursing compliance …

Surgical site infections (SSIs) are a common and preventable complication after colorectal procedures, significantly impacting patient morbidity and increasing healthcare costs. This quality improvement (QI) project aimed to lower SSIs in adult colorectal surgery patients by implementing a perioperative SSI reduction bundle at a large acute care facility in North Texas. The intervention targeted three modifiable risk factors: perioperative hypothermia, hyperglycemia, and incorrect antibiotic timing. Despite established protocols, institutional data revealed subpar compliance with active warming (46%), blood glucose control (52%), and antibiotic stewardship (75%), all of which fell below national benchmarks. A gap analysis and literature review guided the …
Efficient Treatment Of Postoperative Nausea And Vomiting In Adults Recovering From General Anesthesia, Peter A. Palko
Efficient Treatment Of Postoperative Nausea And Vomiting In Adults Recovering From General Anesthesia, Peter A. Palko

This manuscript explores strategies to address postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), a significant complication affecting up to 30% of surgical patients and 80% of those at high risk. Despite its prevalence, appropriate prophylactic administration of antiemetic medications remains suboptimal, with national rates at 67% and certain academic facilities reporting only 32%, far below the 90% recommended threshold. These deficiencies underscore the urgent need for evidence-based interventions to enhance clinical adherence and improve patient care outcomes.
A quality improvement (QI) initiative was implemented to enhance prophylactic treatment and reduce inefficiencies in PONV management. Following a comprehensive literature review, the project employed …

Objective: Implementing a safety bundle checklist to provide interventions for the modifiable risk factors identified in patients scheduled for colorectal surgery can lower the risk of surgical site infections (SSIs) and costs for both the patient and the organization.
Methods: This was a quality improvement project that utilized the implementation of the surgical patient safety system (SURPASS) bundle in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO) surgical safety checklist. Patients who were inpatient and scheduled for colorectal surgery (elective and non-elective) were identified; colorectal surgeons, anesthesia providers, hospitalists, and inpatient staff were provided with education on the SURPASS bundle. Pre- …
