Objective: Implementing a safety bundle checklist to provide interventions for the modifiable risk factors identified in patients scheduled for colorectal surgery can lower the risk of surgical site infections (SSIs) and costs for both the patient and the organization.

Methods: This was a quality improvement project that utilized the implementation of the surgical patient safety system (SURPASS) bundle in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO) surgical safety checklist. CLABSIs are associated with increased length of hospital stays, mortality, and financial implications for both patients and hospital systems. Extensive research has shown implementing CLABSI prevention bundles can reduce infections and costs. These bundles are often misused, highlighting the importance of bundle compliance and education.

Background: Minimally invasive esophagectomy surgery is commonly performed by thoracic surgeons on patients with esophageal cancer. The post-operative care of these patients is meticulous and follows a protocol developed by the thoracic surgeons at the University of Kentucky. At UK Chandler Medical Center, concerns have been raised regarding nurses’ lack of education of the protocol, and therefore decreased implementation.
