Dnp Final Report: Cultivating A Culture Of Civility In A Baccalaureate Nursing Program: A Doctor Of Nursing Practice Evidencebased Practice Project, Monica Sowell
DNP Final Reports
Incivility is a well-known issue in nursing, negatively impacting every aspect of the profession. In response to high incivility levels within a baccalaureate nursing program in central Texas, an incivility education module was created for use in adult medical-surgical courses. The module incorporated online preparatory learning followed by active classroom learning, roleplay practice, and faculty modeling to teach students to define, identify, and respond to incivility using evidence-based cognitive-behavioral strategies. Data was collected pre-education implementation and at three post-education time points to evaluate student self-efficacy changes in recognizing and responding to incivility. The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated changing the education delivery …

Rn Perception Of Resources, Communication, And Leadership During Covid-19 And The Impact On Rn Satisfaction And Turnover In A Multi-Hospital System, Gina Bullington
DNP Projects
Abstract
While RN retention has been a perennial challenge, COVID-19 has exacerbated the problem. The project’s purpose was to study RNs’ perception of communication, resources, and leadership during COVID-19, and the impact on RN turnover in a multi-hospital system. 3280 RNs’ engagement survey responses and turnover percentages from pre-COVID-19 (November 2019) were compared to engagement survey responses and turnover percentages 12 months later (November 2020). 90% (n = 2963) were female and 43% (n = 1396) were between the ages of 25 and 39 years. The majority of RN respondents were employed 1-9 years (59%, n = 1934). …
Improving Emergency Department Throughput: Using A Pull Method Of Patient Flow, Jeffrey Collins
Improving Emergency Department Throughput: Using A Pull Method Of Patient Flow, Jeffrey Collins
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: Overcrowding in the emergency department (ED) has been shown to increase the length of hospital stay, adversely impact patient outcomes, and reduce patient satisfaction. Problems with overcrowding and throughput are often thought of as an ED-specific inefficiency; however, the issue is indicative of hospital-wide inefficiencies.
PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was “For ED patients admitted to the medical-surgical unit at an acute medical center, will the implementation of a pull model for patient flow, when compared to the current push model, reduce admission delay and length of stay (LOS) within six weeks of implementation?

Improving The Nurse Patient Assignment Process On A Medical Surgical Unit, Kevin K. Mcewan
Improving The Nurse Patient Assignment Process On A Medical Surgical Unit, Kevin K. Mcewan
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Nurse patient assignments on an adult medical surgical unit at a community hospital are often accomplished with inconsistent processes and rationales. Each charge nurse utilizes individualized processes to determine which patients will be best teamed-up and assigned to the available nurses. There are frequently no acuity measurements system or set criteria by which the number or types of patients can or should be assigned to any given nurse, nor are staff skill or competency considered in the assignment process.
Project Design: A pilot project was conducted on a medical/surgical unit. The project utilized the American Association of Critical Care …
The Effects Of A Survivorship Care Plan On Hospital Readmission Rates In Allogenic Stem Cell Transplant Patients, Chantaney Williams
The Effects Of A Survivorship Care Plan On Hospital Readmission Rates In Allogenic Stem Cell Transplant Patients, Chantaney Williams
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing DNP Capstone Projects
Stem cell transplants (SCTs) are complicated treatments utilized to treat hematologic malignancies and other disorders, such as multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, acute myeloid leukemia, neuroblastomas, germ cell tumors, amyloidosis, and autoimmune disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus and systemic sclerosis. The complex care of patients undergoing SCTs place them at high risk for adverse outcomes, including infection, cytomegalovirus, graft vs host disease, secondary new cancers, infertility, and sexual dysfunction (American Cancer Society, 2020). Survivorship care plans (SCPs) are a vital part of the discharge process to educate allogenic SCT patients about post-transplantation care. SCPs are implemented to reduce …

Relationship Between Medical-Surgical Nurse Manager Age, Level Of Education, Gender, Tenure, And Staff Nurse Turnover, John B. Summers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Medical-surgical nursing unit nurse turnover rates of over 20% annually are consistently higher than other RN specialty turnover rates. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship between medical-surgical nurses’ ages, levels of education, and turnover intentions. Ninety-one medical-surgical nurse managers (NMs) recruited from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex responded to the survey questionnaire. The study used inferential statistics. The result of the analyses showed a negative association between educational attainment and turnover rates; however, the relationship was insignificant, rs(91) = -.251, p = .016. The second set of hypotheses considered the relationship between NMs’ tenure and their …
Implementing Modern Management In Nursing, Ashley E. Hall
Implementing Modern Management In Nursing, Ashley E. Hall
MSN Capstone Projects
Throughout the recent years, there has been occurrence of massive nursing shortages across the country. While there are many explanations as to why these shortages could be occurring, one very common explanation is that of poor leadership. As it now stands, the training for new leaders is a “trial by fire” style of orientation. New leaders either have a short training period consisting of minor introductions and gathering of various system access, or no training for their new position whatsoever. This style of orientation leads to poor outcomes for the leader as well as the team they are put in …

Journal of Nursing & Interprofessional Leadership in Quality & Safety
Introduction. Wound care practices for neonatal and pediatric patients have created a lack of standardized evidence-based guidelines for treatments in clinical practices. Unfortunately, published clinical guidelines for the evaluation and management of wounds in pediatric populations is limited. Consensus groups are used to develop clinical guidelines which define key aspects of the quality of health care, particularly appropriate indications for interventions. The aim of this initiative was to conduct the first two steps of the guideline development process, and to report on the findings from the expert consensus group for pediatric wound care.
Methods. The goal was to recruit a …

Attention to the well-being of nurses is necessary to ensure the healthcare system can operate effectively, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The workplace environment and support from nursing leadership strongly contribute to nurses’ well-being. Currently, there is little evidence on the effect nursing leadership has on nurses’ well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. This DNP clinical inquiry project sought to learn more about the effects of caring leadership behaviors on nurses’ well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. A survey composed of questions from previously validated and reliable surveys used in the field of nursing was used to collect data. Neuman’s systems theory …

Exploring The Phenomenological Experience Of Precepting, Erica Fowler
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing DNP Capstone Projects
Nurse practitioners and physicians are increasingly sought to volunteer as preceptors for nurse practitioner students. Preceptors serve a crucial role in student education in providing mentorship, instruction, and supervision in the clinical setting. However, preceptors are often difficult to come by, leaving a shortage of available clinicians willing to participate in preceptorships. There is a paucity of information related to exploring the experiences of precepting among clinicians who have served as preceptors. Insight into these experiences are imperative in identifying the impetuses that drive or dissuade clinicians to commit to the preceptor role. This DNP project implemented a survey designed …

The Influences Of Generational Membership And Practice Environment On Nurse Manager Job Satisfaction, Angela Keith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The United States (US) is facing considerable shortages in all aspects of the nursing profession and this includes management. The nurse manager (NM) is a critical member of the healthcare team. They greatly influence the quality of patient care, staff retention, and the implementation of front-line and often progressive healthcare policy changes. Short tenures, high turnover rates, and poor recruiting outcomes, however, are threatening the current and future supply of experienced NMs. Today, there are three generations of NMs in practice: baby boomers, generation Xers, and generation Y'ers (also called millennials). Each of these cohorts has its own unique perception …
