Although leadership theory is introduced in baccalaureate nursing curriculum, opportunities to practice and develop leadership skills are limited for undergraduate nursing students. This study explores the experience of advanced nursing students who provided mentoring and tutoring to beginning nursing students. The experiences they describe are interpreted in light of literature on leadership education in undergraduate nursing schools, as well as that of peer mentoring and peer teaching. These advanced students described opportunities to practice and reflect on leadership skills and attributes. Background

Simulation usage has proliferated throughout nursing education. Although nursing programs have sought integration of simulation to substitute traditional clinical learning hours, the variability of regulations between states raises questions about consistency of learner outcomes.

Methods

The Boards of Nursing (BONs) of the United States and the District of Columbia were queried by internet, phone, and email to discover regulations and guidelines for the use of simulation in nursing education.

Results

More than half of the BONs reported regulations for simulation use, but they varied greatly. Some had regulations defining a percentage of traditional clinical hours that could be replaced …

Decreased self-confidence is seen in nursing students who experience nursing-faculty-to-nursing-student-incivility and in new-graduate-nurses during their transition to practice. Using a quantitative correlational design, I examined the relationship between nursing-faculty-to-nursing-student incivility and new-graduate-nurse self-confidence including the extent to which the relationship exists and whether the relationship existed for some groups more than others, specifically male and female nurses, and nurses who graduated from associate’s degree and Bachelor of Science programs. Heart failure (HF) is one of the leading causes of hospitalization among patients over the age of 65 years. Many are transitioned to skilled nursing facilities (SNF) following hospital discharge. HF-specific SNF staff education was designed for early detection of changes and improved management of this patient population. Computer-based education modules and hands on skill demonstration stations were created to provide basic HF knowledge and specific guideline recommended care measures for the SNF environment. Pediatric neurofibromatosis type-1 (NF1) patients have unique health needs, and often seek care at institutions where no NF1 training has been provided. Cultural immersion has been identified as a preferred method of teaching cultural competence in undergraduate nursing education. Multiple qualitative and quantitative studies have shown that baccalaureate nursing students enjoy international learning experiences and, based on self-efficacy evaluations, feel they have increased cultural competency following immersion experiences. However, there is little evidence to indicate concepts learned during undergraduate cultural competency course work is retained or integrated into nursing practice after leaving the milieu of academia.

Family nurse practitioner (FNP) programs represent almost 60% of all accredited primary-care NP programs in the U.S. in 2015. Increased enrollments and creation of new NP programs has led to a shortage of appropriate clinical sites and the increased competition for quality clinical sites. FNP programs have turned towards utilizing innovative ways to address this shortage including the use of high-fidelity simulation. The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to explore nurse and healthcare leaders' experiences and perceptions of care coordination and transition management (CCTM®). Four barriers emerged that added insight into the lack of adopting and integrating CCTM knowledge, skills, and attitudes in nursing education in the following categories: curriculum redesign, silos of care settings and care providers, knowledge gap, and faculty development/resistance. Recommendations and implications for education, for both nursing students and practicing nurses, are described.

Given the current health care climate, it is critical for nurse educators to provide learning opportunities for students to collaborate with leaders in the community to provide much-needed services to vulnerable populations. We developed, implemented, and evaluated a process for vision screenings and referrals to a local eye center for low-income, immigrant women over three years in an urban setting in the United States.
