Background: The art of nursing is enjoying renewed interest due to changes in the healthcare reimbursement models in the U.S. Value-based reimbursement strategies utilize quality metrics to determine payments. Quality metrics are linked to the art of nursing.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to gather information about practicing nurses and senior baccalaureate nursing students’ interpretation of the human, social, and economic value and their experiences and perceptions of the art of nursing. This information supports changes in practice, policy, and education.

Background: Medical errors are the third leading cause of death in America. Over 10,000 medical errors occur daily, with an estimated financial impact of preventable mistakes is 20 billion dollars annually. Increasing the use of multifarious sophisticated medical technologies in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) poses a risk of medical errors and unintentional harm to patients. However, limited empirical evidence exists regarding ICU nurses’ perspectives.

Purpose: This study aimed to elucidate ICU nurses’ perceptions of their use of complex medical devices.

Nurse educators determine which teaching strategies will best prepare the nurse generalist. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a teaching plan that combined the strategies of pretest/posttest, classroom activities, and a problem-based learning activity: a clinical immersion experience. Currently, associate degree in nursing (ADN) programs produce the majority of registered nurses. Forty years after Kramer's (1974) seminal work, Reality Shock, new graduate nurses continue to have difficulty transitioning to the registered nurse (RN) role. The purpose of this phenomenological study explores the lived experience of new graduate nurses who completed a Veterans Affairs externship program in their senior year of nursing coursework and its perceived impact on their successful transition into the practice role 3-24 months following graduation. Benner's (1984) Novice-to-Expert Model, Karmer's (1974) Reality Shock Theory, and Selder's (1989) Life Transition Theory support a framework for this study.
