Background

The Debriefing Experience Scale (DES) is a tool that is used to explore nursing students’ subjective experiences during a debriefing and to help determine best debriefing practices. A Chinese version of the scale has not been found; its development can enhance learning in simulation activites in Chinese healthcare education programs.

Methods

A simplified Chinese version of the DES was developed and tested using 34 Chinese undergraduate (second year) nursing students. They participated in six simulation scenarios and debriefings. Background: Fluid overload in patients requiring intensive care leads to increased costs for hospitals and patients, increased length of intensive care unit (ICU) and total hospital stay, ventilator days, acute kidney injuries, and mortality rates. Multiple studies have indicated that aggressive de-resuscitation with diuretics can decrease length of stay, ventilator days, organ injury, and mortality rates. A large proportion of infants admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) have genetic conditions. NICU nurses play an important role in providing comprehensive care to these patients and their families. Previous research has demonstrated gaps exist in the genetics knowledge of nurses and that they lack comfort applying genetics information to clinical practice, but no research has been done assessing the knowledge of or comfort with genetics of NICU nurses specifically.
