In the project facility, a gap in practice was identified when a 6-month facility chart review noted a delay in shingles diagnosis 60% of the time. It is important for the Advanced Practice Registered Nursing (APRN) to be knowledgeable regarding diagnoses and best practices for treatment of shingles. AbstractThe purpose of this quality improvement (QI) evaluation project was to decrease patient falls on a neurological stroke unit. This unit had the most falls throughout the hospital system. The unit averaged 50-60 falls per year with an average of 4.75 falls per month. Guided by Neumann’s system model, the project targeted those patients at the highest risk for falling related to deficits post-stroke and post-neurological disease process. Education correlates with nurse performance and avoiding mental fatigue. This project attempted to answer the question, “Educating nurses on mental fatigue will increase knowledge” focusing on educating rehabilitative nurses regarding mental fatigue. The project was guided by the Analysis, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate model. Twenty rehabilitative nurses were administered a pretest consisting of 10 multiple-choice test questions. They received education on mental fatigue through PowerPoint presentations and handouts. After completing the education, participants were administered a posttest with the same 10 questions. An evaluation tool consisting of six questions was completed measuring an increase in knowledge after the posttest. …

Preterm birth is the leading cause of death in children under 5. In addition, there are 22 million babies born underweight each year which also contributes to the infant mortality rate. Some reasons for the inability to thrive and survive are the infants' immature system, allostatic load inadaptability, and undiversified and underdeveloped microbiota. Human breast milk (HBM) provides lifesaving nutrients, which prevents necrotizing enterocolitis and mortality. In addition, probiotic supplementation helps reduce late-onset sepsis, morbidities, and mortality. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) pose a major public health issue as they are associated with poor mental and physical health outcomes. In the United States (US), more than 60% of adults report at least one ACE, and around 15% experienced four or more. Repeated exposure to ACEs stressors can convert ACEs to toxic stress by altering the brain's architecture and function. Evidence suggests that exposure to four or more ACEs, which are indicators of exposure to toxic stressors, is associated with nicotine dependence (ND) and depressive symptoms. Despite the serenity, there is a predator that lingers among the hiking trails and lake shorelines. BACKGROUND: Insomnia is a sleep disorder that is becoming more prevalent. It can significantly impact a person's quality of life and it contributes to a substantial economic financial burden. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBTi) is the primary treatment for insomnia, but patients are rarely referred for this treatment. This quality improvement project focused on implementing motivational interviewing to increase patient utilization of CBTi. It also encouraged utilization of CBTi Coach, a free phone application that has all of the CBTi components, a rigid sleep behavioral plan and frequent follow-up appointments to improve sleep quantity and quality.

Extended mechanical ventilation times after open heart surgery can contribute to complications prolonging recovery and length of stay, as well as increasing mortality. Standardized staff education of immediate post-open-heart recovery and ventilator weaning protocols, combined with the use of ABCDE and VAP bundles can reduce these complications. The current trend to reduce the length of stay for patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty, together with the steadily increasing number of procedures being performed, has impacted on the functional independence goals expected by patients and the ability of nurses to deliver adequate education prior to discharge. Over the past 10 years length of stay has reduced from 7-10 days to 3-4 days and patients are expected to largely self-manage their post-operative rehabilitation and optimise their functional outcomes.

Introduction: Alarm fatigue is a consequence of sensory overload due to frequent nuisance alarms from physiologic monitoring devices. This ‘cry wolf’ phenomenon occurs frequently in the context of continuous cardiac monitoring and ST segment monitoring.

Research significance: The effect of these alarm types on nurses’ perceived alarm fatigue in Australian settings is yet to be examined. Accordingly, this thesis explores registered nurses (RN’s) perception of alarm fatigue. Watermelon stomach, also known as gastric antral vascular ectasia (GAVE) syndrome, is a rare entity. Patients often present with profound unexplained anemia with or without bleeding externalization. We made the diagnosis during a digestive endoscopy for an etiological assessment of this anemia. Endoscopically, antral erythematous lesions in stripes with a punctate appearance, sometimes hemorrhagic, may suggest a watermelon stomach. The pathophysiology of the watermelon stomach remains complex and unclear. Although several pathologies remain implicated, sometimes, it can be idiopathic.
