Despite best available care, uncontrolled chronic kidney disease (CKD) - a complex disease that impacts millions in the United States, will eventually progress to end stage renal disease which is associated with high morbidity and mortality. New evidence suggests management of earlier stages of CKD is effective in delaying disease progression. This project evaluated the impact of a CKD class, led by a nephrology nurse practitioner, on preventing disease progression in advanced CKD patients with diabetes and hypertension. The prevalence of food allergies is a growing concern in the United States. Approximately 8% of the pediatric population has some form of food allergy. Many of these children are either in the preschool and primary school setting, which is where the majority of allergic reactions occur. If the symptoms of a food allergy reaction are not treated within minutes of exposure, the results can be damaging or fatal. Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer related death yet is one of the most preventable. The goal of the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable and the United States Preventive Services Task Force is that 80% of eligible patients will be screened by the year 2018. Provider recommendation has a positive impact on colorectal cancer screening rates. Methods: Completion of colorectal cancer screening rates after use of a provider standard scripted recommendation versus usual care was compared. Pressure ulcers (PUs) present intrinsic risk factors that are not consistently identified by clinical assessments. The objective of this project was to develop a clinical practice guideline (CPG) to provide nurses with guidance in identifying and differentiating how intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors are associated with populations at risk for developing avoidable and unavoidable PUs. A neonate's skin serves many important roles, is fragile, and requires special care. The childbirth educator may be called on to give sound, evidence based advice to caregivers who have concerns about their baby's skin. This article reviews the basics in newborn skin care with qualified recommendations on skin imperfections. Neonatal skin alterations are reviewed and include erythema toxicum neonatorum, milia, sebaceous glands, baby acne, and cradle cap. The rescheduling of hydrocodone to schedule II created an unprecedented challenge for physicians to write a triplicate prescription for patients in the nursing homes who required hydrocodone to manage pain. It is estimated that 24% of persons served by community mental health agencies have a co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorder (COPSD). Up to 50% of persons with substance abuse have co-occurring post-traumatic stress disorder (co/PTSD). A failure remains in objectively identifying this population in everyday practice. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to ascertain nursing leaders and direct care nurses’ perceptions of the health of the work environment in medical-surgical, intermediate care, and progressive care units at an acute care hospital located in central Kentucky. METHODS: This study employed a descriptive, correlational design. Bivariate statistical procedures were utilized to determine the relationship between the perceptions of the health of the work environment and nursing turnover and engagement. The purpose of this integrative review was to examine the effects of music therapy, a complementary intervention, on individuals with dementia. Peer-reviewed journals were retrieved from MEDLINE, CINAHL, CINAHL Plus with Full Text, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Music Index to evaluate their relevance to music therapy use in people diagnosed with dementia. English and Spanish-language research articles published from 2000-2017 were included for the review (n=15). Assistive reproductive technology has progressed significantly over the past few decades. In spite of the advances, people may still resort to a surrogate for bearing and birthing a baby. Surrogacy, though an altruistic act, has been commercialized in the past few years, leading to emergence of several ethico-legal concerns.
