Implementing Evidenced-Based Tools And Obesity Bias Training When Counseling Overweight And Obese Truck Drivers, Sheryl M. Giordano
Implementing Evidenced-Based Tools And Obesity Bias Training When Counseling Overweight And Obese Truck Drivers, Sheryl M. Giordano
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Many Americans are either overweight or obese, but commercial truck drivers are at an even higher risk by nature of their occupation. The 2010 Survey of U.S. Long-Haul Truck Drivers found that 22.8% were overweight, 68.9% were obese, and 17.4% were considered morbidly obese. The concern is that obesity is a gateway to multiple medical disorders, to include obstructive sleep apnea, cancer, diabetes, and cardiac disease. Despite growing concerns of obesity, healthcare providers face problems when counseling and discussing the issue with patients. The failure of healthcare providers to discuss obesity or the impending issue with patients (i.e., truck drivers) …
Impact Of Motivational Interviewing On Body Mass Index, Tajsier L. Thompson
Impact Of Motivational Interviewing On Body Mass Index, Tajsier L. Thompson
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Introduction
Being overweight and obese has become a common lifestyle. More than half of American adults are overweight and more than a quarter of overweight adults are obese. Despite this overwhelming statistic, weight-loss coaching by primary care providers is usually disregarded due to time constraints and lack of skills to motivate patients to reach weight-loss goals. Motivational interviewing (MI) focuses on helping people investigate and overcome ambivalence toward healthy lifestyle modifications by helping them to explore their weaknesses, strengths, and preferences in an effort to facilitate behavioral changes.
Objective
The primary objective of this project is to assess the effectiveness …

An Investigation Of The Impact Of Family Dynamics On Obesity Among African American Adolescent Girls, Tina Mcdyess
Dissertations
Children who are overweight and obese are more likely to maintain their weight status into adulthood (Fletcher, Cooper, Helms, Northington, & Winters, 2009; World Health Organization [WHO], 2015). The prevalence of obesity has shown a more consistent increase among African Americans aged 2-19 (Flegal, Carroll, Kit, & Ogden, 2012; Ogden, Carroll, Kit, & Flegal, 2012; Ogden, Carroll, Kit & Flegal, 2014) with an even greater disparity among African American girls (Ogden & Carroll, 2010). Family dynamics is one of the many factors of the environment that has been linked to obesity among children and adolescents. The purpose of this study …

Obesity And Eating Disorders Prevention Programs: Effects On Adolescents And Young Adults With Weight Related Conditions, Jean Marie Parsons
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: With implementation of healthy weight education programs throughout schools, questions have been raised whether a preoccupation with obesity prevention contributes to an increase in the incidence of eating disorders. The purpose of this critical review of research is to compare obesity prevention programs and eating disorder prevention programs and possible unintended negative effects on adolescents with weight-related conditions. Theoretical Framework: Neuman Systems Model and Erickson’s Psychosocial Development were used. While Neuman theorizes a human being is a total person characterized by physiological, psychological, sociocultural, spiritual, and developmental factors, Erickson focuses on identity versus role confusion at the adolescent age. …

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Background: Obesity is a significant healthcare problem in modern American society. It has led to decreased longevity of employees and decreased productivity in day-to-day duties of healthcare workers. There are more negative attributes to obesity than positive, regardless of the race affected. One of the leading causes of death in 2012 was cardiovascular disease. Due to poor dietary choices, the promotion of sedentary lifestyle has led to complications of obesity such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Major improvements can be made within a community that acknowledges the risks of obesity and seeks to implement preventive programs. Increasing one’s physical …

Rates of obesity and the associated comorbidities continue to increase for women in the United States. Despite information available, efforts at weight loss are often unsuccessful because women lack integral knowledge of how to approach the various components essential for weight loss. This doctoral project was created to address the practice question of whether obesity can be reduced through a step-wise weight loss program that identifies essential elements to reduce weight in menopausal age women. Guided by the information-motivation-behavioral skills model, this project led 17 volunteer participants from a Northwest, Florida primary care clinic through 6 weeks of protocols supplemented …
A Staff Educational Initiative To Improve The Use Of Childhood Obesity Guideline Recommendations, Kris Kuhlmann Louque
A Staff Educational Initiative To Improve The Use Of Childhood Obesity Guideline Recommendations, Kris Kuhlmann Louque
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Obesity affects one out every six children in the United States, which places them at risk for other chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and continued obesity into adulthood. Considering military children are more likely to enter the Armed Forces than their civilian counterparts, an increase in obesity among military families decreases the number of potential future military recruits who are physically eligible to serve. Despite this growing epidemic, providers report a lack of education and a low self-efficacy in the treatment of this condition. This doctorate of nursing practice study addresses this educational gap by attempting to improve …
