We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study to estimate the humanistic and economic burden associated with depression and anxiety among adults with comorbid diabetes and hypertension. Pooled data from the 2013 and 2015 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey were used to include adults (≥18 years old) who were alive and diagnosed with both diabetes and hypertension during the observation period. We assessed the humanistic burden with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and economic burden with the total annual healthcare expenditures. Health literacy status can affect an individual’s ability to self-monitor and manage chronic conditions. It is not uncommon for patients to have difficulty comprehending key patient instructions. The role of the nurse in the hospital setting encompasses many facets which include patient teaching. Providing effective patient teaching is one role that many nurses do not feel confident in implementing. The United States is in the midst of an opioid overdose epidemic resulting to 40,000 accidental drug overdose deaths. In 2016, the number of deaths related to opioid overdose increased to 116 people per day resulting to $504 billion in economic costs. This research study explored the lived experiences of drug addicts having experienced opioid withdrawal symptoms. Phenomenology is useful in discovering the narrative lived experiences that cannot be obtained in quantitative approach. This study evaluated the effect of an educational intervention on improving evidence-based nursing practice (EBP) skills of practicing nurses. In addition, the effects of educational preparation and years of nursing experienced were examined. Using a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design, the Evidence Based Practice Questionnaire (EBPQ) was administered to a convenience sample of registered nurses from a large regional hospital. The experimental group completed an online EBP educational intervention, the first control group completed an alternate unrelated educational intervention, and the second control group was not provided any type of educational intervention. Problem Description: Breastfeeding continuation rates fall below the Healthy People 2020 goal of 60.6% for any breastfeeding at six months postpartum. In Navajo County, Arizona the breastfeeding rate for WIC participants was 36.9%. Breastfeeding provides health benefits to babies and women and decreased health care costs. A quality improvement project was developed and implemented with a pilot group of participants in a rural Northeastern Arizona community.

The aim of this project was to pilot the implementation of evidence-based guidelines and protocols for chronic asthma care in a rural primary care clinic system. Asthma is under-diagnosed and under-treated, resulting in significant burden of disease. Achieving asthma control requires collaborative care between the patient and healthcare clinicians. Education on evidence-based guidelines was provided to healthcare clinicians. Effectiveness of education and integration of altered workflow was measured. Integration of evidence-based guidelines and protocols was demonstrated by clinicians. The results support expanding the project to the remaining five clinics in the clinic system.

Having anticipated there was a significant difference between the averages of the two populations, the student researcher tested a null hypothesis that there was no statistically significant difference between the average perceptions of hospice care among healthcare professionals and the general public in northeast Mississippi. The 14-item Cotter Preceptor Selection Instrument was developed to assess attributes of potential preceptor candidates. Use of a robust and user-friendly instrument can provide nursing leadership with a consistent, measurable, and collaborative process for selecting preceptors.

Background and purpose: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is an existing social problem that affects children worldwide, leading to poor psychological outcomes in adulthood. Childhood adversities including CSA account for 44.6% of childhood and 26%–32% of adult-onset psychiatric disorders. Furthermore, CSA is the second leading cause of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and influences an array of other outcomes such as depression, anxiety, hostility, and low self-esteem. Physician assisted suicide (PAS) has been a legalized presence in the United States since Oregon first passed the Death with Dignity Act in 1994. Now PAS is legalized in six states and it is realistic that nurses may encounter PAS during their career. This project explores pre-licensure nursing student attitudes toward PAS.

A mixed method design incorporating descriptive correlation and thematic analysis of an open-ended question was used.
