• Human factors/ergonomics (HF/E) is its own scientific discipline that can be applied to understanding performance in perioperative medicine.
• Humans are not perfect decision makers and are affected by a variety of factors that can greatly harm their ability to perform, including attention, bias, stress, and fatigue.
• HF/E has a unique perspective on human error, and HF/E can illustrate how moving away from blame can enhance safety.
• HF/E offers strategies for undertaking a systematic approach to assessment of work processes in perioperative medicine that can be used to increase safety and wellbeing of patients and providers.

Meta-Analysis Of The Effects Of Exercise Interventions On Obese Adolescents, Brandy E. Strahan Phd, Rn, Hyochol Ahn Phd, Ms-Ece, Ms-Cts, Aprn, Anp-Bc, Jonathan Shuster M.Sc., Ph.D.

Journal of Nursing & Interprofessional Leadership in Quality & Safety

A meta-analysis of 10 randomized control studies published in 2003-2013 was conducted to provide a summary of the effects of exercise interventions on obese adolescents. Outcomes of the reviewed trials included body mass index, weight, glucose, and triglycerides. Data were combined using an inverse variance weighted random effects model. The effect size estimate for BMI was 1.354 kg/m² (p < 0.001, SE 0.321), indicating that the BMI of individuals in treatment groups improved, as compared to control groups. A statistically significant reduction in weight was greater in the intervention groups than the control groups by 3.815 kg (p = 0.001, SE 1.101). The findings of this meta-analysis show that exercise interventions may improve control of weight and BMI and in turn be a factor in decreasing obesity.

Almost 20% of teen mothers have more than one child before age 20. Researchers have implemented many interventions to prevent subsequent births. The purpose of this study was to examine their effectiveness in preventing repeat pregnancy/birth. We searched nine electronic databases for eligible studies conducted through September, 2014; 47 primary studies met our criteria and provided 52 comparisons. We coded the primary studies for characteristics related to study source, participants, interventions, methods, and outcomes. Using meta-analytic techniques, we calculated intervention effect sizes (ESs) on repeat pregnancy/birth within three time periods: <15 months after the first>birth, 15-35 months, and after 36-60 months. Diabetes is a national public health problem. Low socioeconomic status influence access to quality care for African Americans with Diabetes who must rely on government assisted insurance or are uninsured. Inadequate access and poor quality care for African Americans contributes to increased morbidity and negative health outcomes. This manuscript will examine the existence of diabetes disparities in African Americans pertaining to the role of low socioeconomic status, access, and poor quality care, and suggest some practical strategies for reducing diabetes disparities in this population.

Adult Day Services (ADS) have become increasingly available for community-dwelling older adults who are often experiencing multiple chronic conditions and/or dementia. ADS providers spend a significant amount of time with their clients and offer the opportunity for a wealth of clinical information that can be used by primary care providers and specialists for decision-making about patient care. There are also opportunities for hospitals to coordinate care transitions with ADS providers by involving them with discharge planning with appropriate patients who require post-hospital care. Background: There may be a lack of self-efficacy or confidence in some nurses in the use of evidence-based practice (EBP) especially in a new hospital with nurses who are early in their careers. The aim of this study was to measure self-efficacy and outcomes expectations of nurses in the area of EBP in a new non-replacement hospital on the Magnet® designation journey.

Methods: The study design was a cross-sectional survey using a 28-item questionnaire measuring the total level of self-efficacy in undertaking the 5 steps of EBP of direct patient care nurses.

Introduction/Background: Falls may be the most commonly reported incidents in the acute care setting, and a frequent cause of harm in the hospital. Studies have focused on identifying risk factors for falls and interventions aimed at reducing the risk of falling. The purpose of this study was to describe and compare patient characteristics and pharmacological treatments between patients who fell and patients who did not fall, among a sample of patients deemed to be at-risk for falling during hospitalization. Affective disorders impact women’s health, with a lifetime prevalence of over twelve per cent. They have been correlated with reproductive cycle factors, under the regulation of hormonal circadian rhythms. In affective disorders, circadian rhythms may become desynchronized. The circadian rhythms of cortisol and estradiol may play a role in affective disorders. Suicide has been the second leading cause of death for 18- to 24-year-olds in the United States since 2011. The stress experienced by undergraduate college students has the potential to increase one’s risk for suicide. Resilience theory was used as a theoretical framework to examine the interplay between risk and protective factors. A cross-sectional and correlational design was used to assess the mediating effects of positive thinking and/or social support on suicide resilience in 131 college students 18 to 24 years old who completed an online survey. Post Intensive Care Syndrome-Family (PICS-F) refers to acute and chronic psychological effects of critical illness on family members of patients in intensive care units (ICU). Evidence about the increase and persistence of PICS-F warrants the need for prevention interventions. This study evaluated the feasibility of providing Sensation Awareness Focused Training (SĀF-T) during the ICU stay for spouses of mechanically ventilated patients. Methods: A randomized controlled trial of SĀF-T versus a control group was conducted (n=10) to assess safety, acceptability, feasibility, and effect size of the intervention on PICS-F symptoms.
