The primary, descriptive aim of this dissertation was to describe the nighttime sleep quality of previously mechanically ventilated older adult patients within 24-48 hours of transfer out of the intensive care unit (ICU) to a medical-surgical floor. The secondary, exploratory aim was to examine the relationships between post-ICU sleep efficiency (SE) and wake after sleep onset (WASO) with grip strength in previously mechanically ventilated older adult patients within 24-48 hours of transfer out of the ICU.

A life-threatening diagnosis generates significant emotional problems for many patients across cultures. Death distress—consisting of death depression, death anxiety and death obsession—often results in poorer treatment adherence and lower overall health and quality of life. Aim: To explore the educational profile of nursing managers and head nurses at public hospitals in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Design: A descriptive cross-sectional study design was employed.
Method: A self-administered pre-tested questionnaire was used to recruit 86 nursing managers and head nurses from 17 public hospitals in Kabul. SPSS version 19 was used to analyze and report the data through descriptive statistics.

Misdiagnosis of asymptomatic bacteriuria as a urinary tract infection continues to occur, leading to the overuse of antibiotics. Due to the growing elderly population in long-term care facilities (LTCFs), LTCFs can play a critical role in antimicrobial stewardship. Urinary tract infections are a starting point for moving toward antimicrobial stewardship, since urinary tract infections are common in LTCFs. A retrospective chart review of 156 cases with suspected urinary tract infections (UTIs) was completed in a LTCF. War-torn veterans have had limited support when combating symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Historically, PTSD was viewed as a weakness. Only recently has it gained attention as a health priority for veterans. This scholarly project provides an algorithmic resource to help providers discern and assess whether a veteran is suffering from PTSD. This paper will go on to define what PTSD symptoms are, and what care options there are for veterans suffering from PTSD. One specific option explored is animal therapy as a way for a veteran suffering from PTSD to better manage his or her symptoms.

Coping skills are the physiological and behavioral strategies that one employs to negotiate stressful events. (Moskowitz & Folkman, 2004) Those of lower socioeconomic status are exposed to chronic, uncontrollable stress endemics in impoverished environments. (Wadsworth, 2015) Therefore, it can be hypothesized that there is an inverse relationship between adaptive coping skills of and socioeconomic realities. Coping is the body’s way of responding to stress. Any type of perceived threat that a person encounters cause a neuroendocrine reaction of events.
