Problem: Opioid addiction in pregnancy is a public health crisis that is growing daily. This increased use of opioids during pregnancy has caused a steady rise in the number of infants born addicted to opioids. Current trends in maternal child heath (MCH) settings encourage mothers and babies to be cared for together. Nurses who work in MCH settings care for the opioid addicted mother and her infant(s) as a single patient dyad. Care required for the opioid-addicted mother-infant dyad (OAMID) presents challenges to maternal-child health (MCH) nurses related to the consequences of opioid addiction.

Background

Research demonstrates better health outcomes for both women and their infants when infants are breast-fed. There is evidence that an increasing number of full-term, normal birth weight infants are being admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and that these infants receive less breast milk than their well full-term and preterm infant counter parts. The effect of short-term admission of full-term infants to the NICU on maternal breastfeeding self-efficacy and breastfeeding exclusivity and duration, and the facilitators of and barriers to breastfeeding success reported by these mothers, has not been well explored.

Problem. Mexican origin (MO) women comprise the largest Hispanic subgroup (nearly two-thirds) of Latinas in the US. This subgroup has high incidences of obesity and associated chronic diseases. Modifiable risk factors for obesity and chronic diseases include unhealthy diets and eating patterns. Efforts to understand eating patterns of Hispanics have focused on primarily first-generation Hispanics. While breastfeeding initiation rates for African American mothers are low, an innovative model of group prenatal care, CenteringPregnancy, holds promise to increase breastfeeding rates. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine the effects of CenteringPregnancy versus individual prenatal care on breastfeeding initiation among African American mothers. Using a systematic approach and PRISMA guidelines, 4 electronic databases were used to search the literature. English-language studies, comparing CenteringPregnancy and individual prenatal care, including African American participants, and specifying breastfeeding initiation as an outcome were screened for inclusion. A mass casualty exercise was performed to investigate triage and decontamination of patients exposed to an irritant gas. Nursing students participated in two groups: emergency department triage (ED) and decontamination (DECON). While participants felt overall that the experience was valuable, DECON participants had a greater interest in emergency response and were more likely to volunteer again.

While there is evidence to suggest that hospital lactation support impacts rates of breastfeeding initiation by new mothers, women may benefit from additional lactation support and intervention to meet Healthy People 2020 goals for breastfeeding duration and exclusivity. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in pediatric onset of type II diabetes. This paper will examine elements contributing to this trend. Type II diabetes will be discussed, including related pathophysiology, manifestations, diagnosis, and complications, with differentiation between adult and pediatric onset. Possible prevention and treatment methods appropriate for pediatric patients will also be discussed, along with possible outcomes in pediatric patients that could result from this disease. Overall, this paper will provide insight on the causes of this growing trend, and ways to improve the risks imposed on pediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) are a common and costly quality problem, and their prevention is a national priority. A decade ago, researchers identified an evidence-based bundle of practices that reduce CLABSIs. Compliance with this bundle remains low in many hospitals.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess whether differences in core aspects of work environments-workload, quality of relationships, and prioritization of quality-are associated with variation in maximal CLABSI bundle compliance, that is, compliance 95%-100% of the time in intensive care units (ICUs).

Objectives: To determine the effect of being exposed to music during a colonoscopy on fentanyl and versed requirements in adult patients at an outpatient gastrointestinal clinic when compared to standardized care.

Design: A triple blind randomized controlled trial.

Setting: The study took place at a large medical center in Upstate New York.

Interventions: Comparing the amounts of sedative medications administered in those who were exposed to music therapy and those who were not during a routine colonoscopy.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to gather data on the lived-experience of providing and coordinating type 1 diabetes care in the school setting from school nurses who practice in California. Methodology: A descriptive phenomenological qualitative study design was used to collect data through structured interviews with 13 school nurses. Descriptive coding was used to analyze the interview data. Findings: School nurses face multiple barriers to care when providing type 1 diabetes care in the school setting. The three major themes school nurses encountered were difficulty with care coordination, communication, and parents.

African-American breast cancer survivors commonly demonstrate low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D). Decreased cutaneous conversion, high levels of adiposity, and even breast cancer treatment may influence vitamin D status. Objective To assess differences in cytokine levels in cervicovaginal fluid (CVF) and serum across trimesters between women with preterm births (PTBs) and full-term births.

Study Design This multicenter study enrolled 302 women with a singleton gestation. CVF and serum cytokines, interleukin 1α (IL-1α), IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-8, were measured. Women with at least one cytokine assessment and noted PTB status in their medical record were retained in the study (N = 272). Data were analyzed using mixed modeling (main effects of PTBs and time/trimester).

Research studies surrounding feedback primarily centered on frameworks designed as models for delivering feedback as well as the timing for delivering feedback.
