A literature review was conducted between the months of September and December 2017 to determine whether using heparinized central lines to draw coagulation studies is best evidence based practice. The purpose was to research the efficacy of using a heparinized central line to draw coagulation studies. This research is for the Abben Cancer Center affiliated with Spencer Hospital in Spencer, Iowa. Ten articles focusing on patients with heparinized lines or discard volume were reviewed. Results showed that heparin primarily has an effect on Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT). It was found that using heparinized central lines to draw blood studies …

Heart failure is a prevalent, high-risk condition associated with high mortality and frequent hospitalizations. Heart failure is characterized by acute exacerbations of signs and symptoms, and affects almost six million Americans leading to one of the most costly illnesses in the United States. Management of heart failure is complex and individualized relying on appropriate education, self-care management, medications, and adequate follow-up to succeed in treatment. Pain management is the culmination of physician, nurse, and patient expectations. Successful pain management is impacted by the patient’s perception and expectation of the provided interventions, as well as the perception of the care provider of the patient’s pain. Pain assessment tools have been utilized for decades and still pain control is rated as inadequate. Providing scripted education to the patient on the purpose and utilization of these tools impacts the patient’s perception of pain management. Opioid use is an epidemic in the US costing millions annually. Chronic lower-back pain (CLBP) affects people world-wide and is frequently treated with opioids long-term. Long-term opioid use leads to negative health related consequences, increased risk for depression, negative unintended opioid related side-effects, overdose, and death. The purpose of this article is threefold: 1) to educate PCP on the complexities of CP and negative implications of opioid treatment for CLBP while illuminating the benefits of non-opioid management, 2) to review non-opioid treatment methods for CLBP to eliminate opioids, and 3) to construct feasible options for treating CLBP without opioids.

Background

The Community Healthy Activities Model Program for Seniors (CHAMPS) survey, summarized into weekly caloric expenditures, is a common physical activity (PA) assessment tool among older adults. Specific types of PA reported in the CHAMPS have not been systematically analyzed. We applied latent class analysis to identify the patterns of PA among sedentary older adults with diabetes reported in the CHAMPS survey.

Methods

Introduction: Falls are the most common accident reported in acute care hospitals and patients who are 65 and older are the most vulnerable. Falls can lead to physical and emotional injury, reduced mobility and functioning, increased length of hospital stay, increased healthcare costs, and admission to long-term care facilities. In 2008, the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has eliminated reimbursement to hospitals for treatment of injuries resulting from a fall during hospitalization. The impetus for the recognition of the need for legal partners in healthcare came from Boston City Hospital in 1993. The hospital provided care to the largest uninsured and underinsured population in the New England states. The pediatric patients were noted by Dr. Barry Zuckerman to have difficulty in recovering from medical illnesses. He linked their inability to improve their health to poor housing, food insecurity, and basic social determinants of health. This project serves to explore evidence for three nursing interventions aimed at neonatal abstinence syndrome including: breastfeeding, kangaroo care, and rooming-in. Many nursing interventions and policies are aimed at treating the symptoms despite limited research supporting their effectiveness. Further investigation into these interventions and policies regarding neonatal abstinence syndrome needs to be addressed in order to improve the quality of care for affected neonates and decrease the stigma surrounding neonatal abstinence syndrome.

Problem/Significance: Food allergy is a growing public health concern in the United States affecting nearly 15 million Americans. According to FAIR Health (Gelburd, 2017), diagnoses of anaphylactic food reactions increased by 377% nationwide from 2007 to 2016, with 66% among patients 18 years or younger, and 34% in those over 18 years old. Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI) is a preventable issue in healthcare. CLABSI contributes to negative patient outcomes and increased healthcare cost. Research demonstrates that many interventions are effective in reducing the rate of CLABSI. The implementation of CLABSI bundles can significantly reduce the occurrence of CLABSI. This quality improvement project implemented a CLABSI bundle that specifically targeted identified areas of weakness in CLABSI prevention at an organization with a focus on adult oncology care. This dataset contains the results of University of Miami Wellness Assessments collected in 2014-2016 to determine the behaviors, attitudes and beliefs of undergraduate students. In 2014, a 47 question online survey was administered to 1364 undergraduate students at the University of Miami between September 2014 and January 2015. In 2016, a 40 question online survey was administered to 801 undergraduate students at the University of Miami between August and September 2016.
