Prisons As Learning Environments For Nursing And Public Health Practice, Mary Bouchaud, Phd, Rn, Madeline Brooks
College of Nursing Posters
Background:
Challenges in Securing Community Nursing Rotation Sites Eighteen years of providing clinical placement for Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students has demonstrated that community-based educational opportunities are shrinking due to:
•Increased regulatory requirements
•Competing numbers of nursing schools
•Increasing student enrollment
•Decreasing availability of community resources capable and willing to precept students
These issues present challenges to preparing students for nursing practice. A college of nursing at an urban, academic health center found a solution by working with unexpected partners – maximum security prisons and juvenile detention centers.
A Novel Solution: Partnerships with Prisons
Several factors make prisons …

Clustering Diabetes Appointments And Education, April Pugh
Clustering Diabetes Appointments And Education, April Pugh
Doctoral Dissertations and Scholarly Projects
Diabetes impacts the lives of millions of Americans, and the number is growing rapidly every year. Diabetes education has been demonstrated to have a positive impact of the self-management of this chronic disease and effective in the reduction of A1C, weight, and blood pressure. Barriers to attendance at both diabetes education classes and provider appointments are varied with lack of transportation and available time cited as two of the many reasons, especially in the rural and medically underserved regions of the country. The project assessed a process improvement intervention clustering diabetes education with provider appointments to increase attendance and decrease …

Background: Mental health disorders are highly prevalent in the U.S. Nursing students’ perceptions regarding the stigma of mental illness will impact the quality of care delivered and the patients’ outcomes.
Method: Data was collected from 64 sophomore students. Five open ended questions were distributed to the students during the first class. All the surveys were collected by a volunteer student and were placed in the instructor’s mailbox in a sealed envelope.
Results: The results revealed three categories: students ‘perceptions of the causes of mental illness stigmatization, their own perception of mental illness, and their perception on how to break the …

The purpose of this article is to provide nurse educators with recommendations on how to develop the needed structures and processes that lead to accreditation success. We provide a comprehensive list of 28 recommendations, a timeline for completion of tasks, and specific information on how to document the achievement of the four CCNE Standards. The first two recommendations deal with two vital structures that comprise a well-functioning program: an effective committee structure and a robust evaluation plan. Recommendations 3 to 12 concern the process steps for preparing for an accreditation visit and are aligned with a timeline for completion. The …

Knowledge And Attitudes Of Orthopedic Nurses Regarding Pain Management, Matthew Neumann
Knowledge And Attitudes Of Orthopedic Nurses Regarding Pain Management, Matthew Neumann
Doctoral Dissertations and Scholarly Projects
Nurses are at the forefront in the care of patient pain management; however, many nurses do not possess the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for best pain management outcomes. Adequate pain management education is often infrequent in academic settings and in post-graduate health care environments. That shortcoming suggests a need to improve pain management education as advocated by The Joint Commission and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The purpose of this study is to measure 20 nurses’ knowledge and attitudes regarding pain and pain management while working in an orthopedic setting. It was an evidence-based practice project utilizing …

Strategies To Promote Health In North American French Jewish Immigrants, Balkys L. Bivins, Rosemary F. Hall
Strategies To Promote Health In North American French Jewish Immigrants, Balkys L. Bivins, Rosemary F. Hall
Faculty Articles
Anti-Semitism in the form of violent acts is on the rise in France and throughout Europe. These incidents and the looming threat of targeted violence are leading to the outmigration of Jewish individuals in France to Israel, Canada, and the United States. The health impact of this migration on individuals of the French Jewry who are now residing in the United States has not been studied. This paper will propose and address the need for culturally tailored nursing strategies to make a positive impact on the health, well-being, and lives of these individuals. Additionally, the writers will discuss the challenges …

Purpose: To measure clinical impact of an evidence-based educational strategy on urinary tract infection (UTI) rates in a 900+ bed acute care facility located in a southwestern state in the United States (US).
Clinical Question: Will a focu son staff education in the ICU on proper placement techniques, care, and early removal of urinary retention catheters reduce incidences of CAUTIs in an ICU setting?

The Impact Of Simulation Sequencing On Perceived Clinical Decision Making, Aimee A. Woda, Jamie Hansen, Mary Paquette, Robert V. Topp
The Impact Of Simulation Sequencing On Perceived Clinical Decision Making, Aimee A. Woda, Jamie Hansen, Mary Paquette, Robert V. Topp
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
An emerging nursing education trend is to utilize simulated learning experiences as a means to optimize competency and decision making skills. The purpose of this study was to examine differences in students' perception of clinical decision making and clinical decision making-related self-confidence and anxiety based on the sequence (order) in which they participated in a block of simulated versus hospital-based learning experiences.
A quasi-experimental crossover design was used. Between and within group differences were found relative to self-confidence with the decision making process. When comparing groups, at baseline the simulation followed by hospital group had significantly higher self-confidence scores, however, …

Debrief In Emergency Departments To Improve Compassion Fatigue And Promote Resiliency, Kristin Haglund, Madeline Schmidt
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
The purpose of this case study was to describe compassion fatigue using one nurse's experience as an example and to present the process of Personal Reflective Debrief as an intervention to prevent compassion fatigue in emergency department (ED) nurses. Debriefing after adverse outcomes using a structured model has been used in health care as a nonthreatening and relatively low-cost way to discuss unanticipated outcomes, identify opportunities for improvement, and heal as a group. There are many methods of debrief tailored to specific timing around events, specific populations of health care workers, and amount of time for debriefing. Debrief with personal …

Background: Clients in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) are required to complete education modules quarterly to maintain eligibility. The purposes of this project were to: (1) create a whooping cough vaccination education module for WIC clients; (2) evaluate baseline perceptions of WIC clients on the whooping cough vaccine and disease; and (3) evaluate whooping cough knowledge following completion of the module. Problem: A decline in vaccination rates among infants and children using WIC services was reported by a local WIC program director who requested whooping cough vaccination education materials. This quality improvement project included …
