Nurses are fundamental to the delivery of quality, safe and competent health care in multilevel complex systems. Faced with challenging, dynamic, and evolving patient care and workforce issues, nurses must create ethical environments, which foster a respectful climate in which decisions are made and supported. The current study examined the relationship between ethical climate, frequency of moral distress, intensity of moral distress, and overall job satisfaction among registered nurses at two hospitals located in the Southeastern United States as measured by the Moral Distress Scale and the Hospital Ethical Climate Survey. This study explored the applicability of a business employability model to nursing. The need for nursing education programs to assess and track employability of NLRN graduates has been demonstrated by several studies. Successful alumni surveys help generate aggregate data that faculty can use to evaluate and strengthen their programs, stimulate change, and improve outcomes.

Airway management is the cornerstone of anesthesia practice. Fiberoptic intubations (FOIs) are one advanced airway method that Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) must be able to use. However, the low volume, high risk nature of this skill may affect a practitioner’s ability to perform this type of intubation. Despite this, no standardized training programs had been developed for this skill. The purpose of this project was to develop and implement an evidence-based educational simulation training program that allowed CRNAs the opportunity to practice safe FOIs and evaluate its effect on competence and self-confidence.

Background. Weight gain during the childbearing years and failure to lose pregnancy weight after birth contribute to the development of obesity in Latinas. Design and Methods. Madres para la Salud (Mothers for Health) is a 12-month prospective, randomized controlled trial exploring a social support intervention with moderate-intensity physical activity to effect changes in body fat, systemic and fat tissue inflammation, and depression symptoms in sedentary postpartum Latinas. Individuals who experience auditory hallucinations (AH) frequently report hearing unpleasant voices saying disturbing things to them, making derogatory remarks about them, or commanding them to do something, including harming themselves or someone else. The Self-Management of Unpleasant Auditory Hallucinations Practice Model was developed to help psychiatric-mental health nurses in both inpatient and outpatient settings implement evidence-based nursing care for voice hearers who are distressed by unpleasant voices. The model's utility extends to nursing education, administration, and research. In response, an initiative titled “Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN)” has been adopted by nursing programs across the nation, which describes the six main competencies to be included in nursing curricula. Dramatic rises in injection drug use (IDU) in sub-Saharan Africa account for increasingly more infections in a region already overwhelmed by the HIV epidemic. There is no known estimate of the number of people who inject drugs (PWID) in the region, or the associated HIV prevalence in PWID. We reviewed literature with the goal of describing high-risk practices and exposures in PWID in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as current HIV prevention activities aimed at drug use. This pilot study created a comprehensive orientation module to help Midwives for Haiti prepare volunteers to serve in the organization’s midwifery school in Haiti. The module was evaluated to assess its perceived effectiveness and) revise it to better fit volunteer needs. The volunteers completed the module prior to their trip to Haiti and then completed an evaluation survey upon return; only three volunteers completed the entire pilot study process. Two out of three responded that the orientation fully prepared them for their time abroad. Other comments included the need for (a) additional emphasis on basic math and drip rate calculations, …

Background: Obesity presents a public health challenge and is a serious chronic medical condition, which is associated with multiple co-morbidities and reduced survivability/longevity (Davis, Stange, & Howitz, 2010). African American adolescents who retain weight after pregnancy are at the highest risk of becoming obese adults. Obesity is expected to cost the United States health care system over 237 million dollars (National Institutes of health, 2011) within the next decade.

Psychosocial adaptation to pregnancy among urban African-American women has not been well-researched. The purpose of this study was to examine predictors of psychosocial adaptation to pregnancy and to explore relationships among socioeconomic status, experiences and frequency of discrimination, personal control beliefs, social support, planned pregnancy, and model of health care among urban African-American primiparas using life course theory and Lederman's model of psychosocial adaptation to pregnancy as the framework.
