Decreasing Utilization Of Indwelling Urinary Catheters, Stacie Lomibao Fujimoto

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Increased utilization and prolonged dwell times of indwelling urinary catheters (IUCs) are directly related to the risk of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs)- the fifth most common type of healthcare associated infection (HAI). The National Health and Safety Network (NHSN) uses the Standardized Utilization Ratio (SUR) metric to measure and compare device utilization in acute care hospitals across the nation. The national target SUR benchmark is 1.0, and a SUR under 1.0 indicates less device usage than NHSN predicts on an inpatient unit. In 2022 a Neuro Med-Surg unit experienced an overall SUR of 1.047 with 2 CAUTIs observed. A …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Background: The role of race on functional outcomes after robotic partial nephrectomy (RPN) is still a matter of debate. We aimed to evaluate the clinical and pathologic characteristics of African American (AA) and Caucasian patients who underwent RPN and analyzed the association between race and functional outcomes.

Methods: Data was obtained from a multi-institutional database of patients who underwent RPN in 6 institutions in the USA. We identified 999 patients with complete clinical data. Sixty-three patients (6.3%) were AA, and each patient was matched (1:3) to Caucasian patients by age at surgery, gender, Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) and renal score. …

Robot-Assisted Laparoscopic Retroperitoneal Lymph Node Dissection: A Minimally Invasive Surgical Approach For Testicular Cancer., Harsha R Mittakanti, James R Porter Jan 2020

Robot-Assisted Laparoscopic Retroperitoneal Lymph Node Dissection: A Minimally Invasive Surgical Approach For Testicular Cancer., Harsha R Mittakanti, James R Porter

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND) can been employed as primary treatment for stage I non-seminomatous germ cell tumor (NSGCT) as well as for treatment of post-chemotherapy masses. Open RPLND (O-RPLND) has long been the standard approach for lymphadenectomy, but is associated with significant morbidity. Laparoscopic RPLND (L-RPLND) was developed to mitigate the morbidity associated with O-RPLND, but is a technically challenging procedure requiring significant experience with laparoscopic dissection and suturing to remove lymph nodes behind the great vessels and to control vascular injury. Robotic RPLND (R-RPLND) has gained traction in recent years as an alternative to both O-RPLND and L-RPLND. …

Targeting Dna Repair In Metastatic Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer (Mcrpc): Genomic Screening For A Clinical Trial Of Rucaparib, Alan Bryce, Mitchell E. Gross, Charles Redfern, Nicholas Vogelzang, Matthew Rettig, Thomas Stanton, Julie N. Graff, Sandhya Srinivas, Andrea Loehr, Wassim Abida

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Objectives: The high prevalence of men with mCRPC carrying pathogenic mutations in DNA damage repair (DDR) genes may have implications for clinical treatment, as poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors, such as rucaparib, have shown preliminary evidence of activity in these patients. The ongoing phase 2 TRITON2 study (NCT02952534) is evaluating rucaparib in mCRPC patients harboring a deleterious germline or somatic mutation in BRCA1, BRCA2, ATM, or other DDR gene. Here we present results from genomic screening of tissue and plasma samples from mCRPC patients.

Methods: Comprehensive genomic profiling was performed by Foundation Medicine, Inc., using FFPE tumor tissue …

Downregulation Of Cenpf Remodels Prostate Cancer Cells And Alters Cellular Metabolism., Muhammad Shahid, Minhyung Kim, Min Young Lee, Austin Yeon, Sungyong You, Hyung L Kim, Jayoung Kim

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Metabolic alterations in prostate cancer (PC) are associated with progression and aggressiveness. However, the underlying mechanisms behind PC metabolic functions are unknown. The authors' group recently reported on the important role of centromere protein F (CENPF), a protein associated with the centromere-kinetochore complex and chromosomal segregation during mitosis, in PC MRI visibility. This study focuses on discerning the role of CENPF in metabolic perturbation in human PC3 cells. A series of bioinformatics analyses shows that CENPF is one gene that is strongly associated with aggressive PC and that its expression is positively correlated with metastasis. By identifying and reconstructing the …

A Randomized Control Trial Of Anti-Inflammatory Regional Hypothermia On Urinary Continence During Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy., Linda M Huynh, Douglas Skarecky, James R Porter, Christian Wagner, Jorn Witt, Timothy Wilson, Clayton Lau, Thomas E Ahlering Nov 2018

A Randomized Control Trial Of Anti-Inflammatory Regional Hypothermia On Urinary Continence During Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy., Linda M Huynh, Douglas Skarecky, James R Porter, Christian Wagner, Jorn Witt, Timothy Wilson, Clayton Lau, Thomas E Ahlering

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

The present study seeks to present a single-blind, randomized control trial of a hypothermic anti-inflammatory device, the endorectal cooling balloon (ECB), to assess whether regional hypothermia could improve 90-day and time to pad-free continence following robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). Five high-volume surgeons at three institutions had patients randomized (1:1) to regional hypothermia with ECB versus control. Patients were blinded to device use, as it was inserted and removed intraoperatively. Knowledge of device use was restricted to the operating room personnel only; recovery room and ward nursing staff were not informed of device use and instructed to indicate such if a …

Reprogrammed Lipid Metabolism In Bladder Cancer With Cisplatin Resistance., Min Young Lee, Austin Yeon, Muhammad Shahid, Eunho Cho, Vikram Sairam, Robert Figlin, Khae-Hwan Kim, Jayoung Kim

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Due to its tendency to recur and acquire chemoresistance quickly, bladder cancer (BC) remains to be an elusive and difficult disease. Patients with recurrent and chemoresistant BC have an extremely poor prognosis. One possible approach that may provide insightful and valuable information regarding resistance mechanisms is looking into the lipid metabolism of BC cells. Metabolism of lipids is essential for cancer cells and is associated with the regulation of a variety of key cellular processes and functions. This study conducted a comparative lipidomic profiling of two isogenic human T24 bladder cancer cell lines, one of which is clinically characterized as …
