Pessaries are commonly used to treat pelvic organ prolapse. While these devices generally pose negligible risk, serious morbidity can be associated with neglected use.

Case Presentation

A 91-year-old woman began to experience acute pain related to an impacted pessary. An Exam in the operating room under anesthesia revealed that the pessary was deeply embedded within the vaginal canal and was noted to have a hard metal wire under a rubber exterior. Surgical management of kidney stones in pregnancy can be a serious problem for both mother and fetus.

Case Presentation

A 20-year-old woman with a second trimester pregnancy presented to the emergency room with renal calculi. She required surgical intervention and a left nephrostomy tube after consultation with urology. Five weeks later, her tube was solidified in place unbeknownst to her care team. She required several surgeries, dealt with encrustation remnants, infections, radiation exposure, persistent infection requiring antibiotic management, and, ultimately, an early delivery at 37 weeks.

Since its introduction in 2010, a dynamic growth of robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) has been observed in Poland. The number of healthcare institutions implementing RAS has tripled in the last 36 months, with 80 surgical robots currently utilized on a national scale. While urological procedures dominate RAS utilization (73%), adoption in gynecology (12.2%) and gastrointestinal surgery (8.5%) is rising, driven by recent National Health Fund reimbursement policies. However, significant fragmentation and alarmingly low numbers of individual RAS procedures were identified: 47.7% of surgeons perform less than 40 cases annually. Problem: The purpose of this project was to determine the most effective prophylactic antibiotic to decrease the number of patients who have urinary tract infections (UTIs) after pelvic floor reconstructive surgery in a gynecological reconstructive surgery practice.

Methods: This was a retrospective chart review from 2015-2017 that included 732 subjects from a single practice. All patients underwent pelvic floor reconstructive surgery, with or without a midurethral sling placed. Patients also had a catheter and vaginal packing postoperatively. Patients who had a culture-proven UTI within the six-week postoperative period were noted.

Worldwide 50%–70% of all cases of maternal morbidity have been attributed to postpartum hemorrhage. This report discusses a case of bicornuate uterus in a term pregnancy. The delivery was by cesarean section, which was followed by massive postpartum hemorrhage, managed successfully with balloon tamponade. This is the second reported case of successful management of post partum hemorrhage in a bicornuate uterus with balloon tamponade. Treatment options for gynecological malignancies, such as gynecological surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, are proven risk factors for pelvic floor dysfunction. OBJECTIVES: To determine if distance traveled for care influenced patient choice for conservative vs. surgical treatment for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and/or stress urinary incontinence (SUI).

METHODS: Retrospective chart review of all new patients seen in the Urogynecology clinic at the University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) from January 2007 through September 2011. Data collected included medical history, Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification (POPQ) examination, and validated quality of life questionnaires.
