The Long-Term Economic Implications Of Burn Injury For Burn Survivors, Jacob M. Dougherty Bs, Hannan A. Maqsood Mbbs, Zhaohui Fan Md Mph, Stewart C. Wang Md Phd, Mark R. Hemmila Md, Naveen F. Sangji Md Mph

Medical Student Research Symposium

Introduction: The long-term economic implications of burn injury on patients and payors has not been well described. Burn injury can be costly due to prolonged intensive care, wound care, rehabilitation, psychological care, and reconstructive surgery that may be required well after the initial injury. We investigated index and post-acute payor and out-of-pocket (OOP) costs related to burn injury for in-patient care at 30 days, and up to 36 months post-discharge to understand the long-term economic implications for burn survivors.

Methods: An observational cohort study was conducted using a commercial claims database from IBM Watson Health® Marketscan. Patients age ≤ …

Modified Himawari Technique For Comminuted Patella Fractures: A Case Report - An Economically Yet Rigidly Efficient Option, Leong Li Theng Dr, Eyrique Goh Boay Heong Dr Jan 2024

Modified Himawari Technique For Comminuted Patella Fractures: A Case Report - An Economically Yet Rigidly Efficient Option, Leong Li Theng Dr, Eyrique Goh Boay Heong Dr

Manipal Journal of Nursing and Health Sciences

Comminuted patella fracture is a tricky and complicated case to manage and yet a common fracture. It’s often complicated with post operative pseudoarthrosis, malunion, poor rehabilitation and reduced knee range of motion. Tension band wiring, Cerclarge wiring and screw fixation are the common surgical modalities however it’s unable to hold peripherally scattered fragments in place rigidly. It is often associated with failure osteosynthesis, fracture displacement, resulting in post op osteoarthritis. Here we demonstrate a case of a modification of the original Himawari Technique as a much cost-effective method compared to the original, while being a superior treatment option with good …

The Effects Of Social Support On Recovery Outcomes Of Hip Fracture Patients, Preshecca Ragavan Jan 2024

The Effects Of Social Support On Recovery Outcomes Of Hip Fracture Patients, Preshecca Ragavan

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This literature review, completed under the guidance of Ms. Anuja Sarode-Paciorek from Summa Health - Akron, will investigate the effects of social support on the recovery outcomes of hip fracture patients. As part of this literature review, I will collect and analyze several scientific journal articles previously published on this topic to gain an overview of what prior knowledge clinical researchers have already gathered about this topic. As part of the analyses, each article will be thoroughly read and briefly summarized. Then, these summaries will be used to compile a list of a few strengths and a list of a …

Konsep Diagnosis Dan Penatalaksanaan Fraktur Osteoporosis Terkini, I Gusti Ngurah Wien Aryana, Febyan Febyan Dec 2023

Konsep Diagnosis Dan Penatalaksanaan Fraktur Osteoporosis Terkini, I Gusti Ngurah Wien Aryana, Febyan Febyan

Jurnal Penyakit Dalam Indonesia

Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disease that is caused by a decreased amount of bone mass, and microarchitectural damage to bone tissue that affects the bone to break easily. Osteoporosis can be divided into primary and secondary etiologies. Vertebral, hip, distal radius, and proximal humerus are the most common predilection of fracture complication due to osteoporosis. The diagnosis of osteoporotic fractures is established based on the identification of risk factors, general clinical manifestations, specific manifestation from each fracture predilection, and advanced examinations, including radiology imaging and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. The purpose of osteoporotic fractures management in elderly is a stable …

Systematic Review Of Needlestick Injuries In The Operating Room: A Case For Surgical Glove Redesigning, Shalmali Mirajkar, Zachary Bauman, Bethany Lowndes Aug 2023

Systematic Review Of Needlestick Injuries In The Operating Room: A Case For Surgical Glove Redesigning, Shalmali Mirajkar, Zachary Bauman, Bethany Lowndes

EMET Projects

Background: Sharps or needlestick injuries (NSI) occur in roughly 15% of surgeries and are largely preventable. With such injuries, healthcare workers have a high risk of exposure to blood borne pathogens. Despite the implementation of several prevention measures such as double gloving and using blunt suture needles, there is still a high prevalence of NSIs. The aim of the current study is to conduct a systematic review to identify the most vulnerable parts of the hand for needlestick injuries, the most common tasks during which injuries occurred, and the most common instrument associated with the injury.

Methods: A …

Trauma Recidivism In An Aging Population: Who Is Most At Risk?, Ryan Taylor, Austin Mccrea, Nayda Parisio Poldiak, Keely Muertos, Saptarshi Biswas, Christoph Kaufmann

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Background

Repeated episodes of trauma, particularly in older adults, result in increased morbidity and mortality. This study investigates trauma recidivism in our adult population to identify which patients in our region are more likely to become recidivists.

Materials and Methods

This 4 year retrospective study (2013 to 2017) examines all patients 18 years of age or older with multiple hospital admissions for trauma, comparing patients ages 65 and older (older adults) to those ages 18 to 64 (younger adults). Exclusion criteria consisted of those younger than 18 and/or had a home zip code outside of the study region. Data included …

Section of Orthopaedic Surgery

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a great impact on orthopedic surgery with a significant curtailment in elective surgeries which is the major bread and butter for orthopedic surgeons. It was also observed that the spectrum of orthopedic trauma injuries has shifted from more severe and frequent road traffic accidents (high energy trauma) to general, low energy house-hold injuries like low energy fractures in the elderly, pediatric fractures, house-hold sharp cut injuries and nail bed lacerations. The aim of this study is to appraise the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on orthopedic surgical practice, both inpatient and outpatient facility.

Woman and Child Health

Background: In recent years, more than 120 million people each year have needed urgent humanitarian assistance and protection. Armed conflict has profoundly negative consequences in communities. Destruction of civilian infrastructure impacts access to basic health services and complicates widespread emergency responses. The number of conflicts occurring is increasing, lasting longer and affecting more people today than a decade ago. The number of children living in conflict zones has been steadily increasing since the year 2000, increasing the need for health services and resources. This review systematically synthesised the indexed and grey literature reporting on the delivery of trauma and rehabilitation …
