Training surgeons poses many unique challenges. In addition to the clinical acumen that must be learned, a minimum threshold of technical competency is a requisite for independent practice. The trends of endovascular interventions and open surgical procedures add another layer of complexity to vascular surgery training. Simulation can provide a solution for both technical skills training and evaluating proficiency. The Education Committee of the Association of Program Directors of Vascular Surgery (APDVS) developed the Fundamentals of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery platform to provide an opportunity for more uniform basic technical skill teaching and assessment across all vascular training programs. OBJECTIVE: In 2015, a transition was initiated among the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM), resulting in a single accrediting body for residencies and fellowships as of 2020. Background: High-quality intraoperative photography is vital for treatment planning, patient counseling, and surgical education. Inconsistencies in image quality are prevalent in orthopedic literature due to the absence of formalized criteria specific to orthopedic settings. In 2014, "Medical Photography: Principles for Orthopedics" introduced guidelines intending to standardize protocols for capturing clinical images. By comparing the quality of images taken both before and after these proposed guidelines, this project aims to evaluate whether this has influenced a trend toward standardization and consistency in intraoperative orthopedic photography.

Despite the increased emphasis on simulation-based interprofessional education (Sim-IPE) over the last 2 decades, surgical teamwork continues to suffer from ineffective dynamics requiring educational interventions to help improve it. This paper will provide an overview of the status of interprofessional simulation education in surgery by addressing the following topics: (1) team dynamics in surgery, (2) key concepts related to IPE and its benefits, and (3) salient examples of Sim-IPE in surgery with implementation tips.

Malignant neoplasms of the lung commonly metastasize to lymph nodes, bone, brain, and liver via hematogenous and lymphatic routes. Much less commonly, metastasis occurs in the breast. Secondary metastatic disease of the breast is very rare, with a reported incidence ranging from 0.4-1.3%­­—with primary lung cancer being one of the most anomalous sources. This case details non-small cell lung cancer metastasis to the breast with proven primary contralateral lung origination. This atypical finding prompts medical professionals to consider these malignant cells' immunologic, histologic, and pathologic makeup to understand further and treat the neoplasm.

OBJECTIVE: Surgical administrative chief residents (ACRs) play essential roles in residency training programs, including resident advocates, conflict negotiators, and scheduling managers. Despite their varied and important jobs, surgical ACRs receive very little training or introduction to the role.

DESIGN: We describe here the creation and implementation of an Administrative Chief Resident Workshop developed for the Association of Program Directors in Surgery (APDS) to familiarize chief residents with their roles in scheduling and conflict negotiation.

SETTING: The workshop was implemented at the National APDS Meeting in 2024.

Objective: Augmented reality (AR) telestration has the potential to completely transform surgical teaching and training. In contrast to traditional telestration and telestration without AR, this systematic review and meta-analysis attempted to thoroughly assess the effect of telestration with AR on a variety of performance metrics, including task completion time, error rates, GOALS task-specific scores, OSATS task-specific scores, and GOALS Global scores. Background: We developed and implemented a real-world assessment tool (RWA) for resident surgery. It was designed to improve utility by reducing faculty and trainee cost (completion and training time, cognitive burden). RWA uses an entrustability scale where higher scores indicate a resident’s readiness for independent surgical practice. We describe a two-phase implementation of RWA and report validity evidence for cataract surgery assessment.

BACKGROUND: An international panel of obesity medicine experts from multiple professional organizations examined patterns of obesity care and current obesity treatment guidelines to identify areas requiring updating in response to emerging science and clinical evidence.

AIMS: The panel focused on multiple medical health and societal issues influencing effective treatment of obesity and identified several unmet needs in the definition, assessment, and care of obesity.

METHODS: The panel was held in Leesburg, Virginia in September 2019.

Background

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the residency experience for physicians across all specialties. There have been studies examining resident perspectives on changes in curriculum and clinical experiences due to the pandemic; however, little research has been conducted on how residents in different specialties interpreted their educational experience and rates of burnout during the pandemic.

Methods

We extended surveys to 281 residents across 15 separate residency programs between November 17, 2020, and December 20, 2020. Patient access to diagnostic outpatient (OP) cardiac catheterization is limited by a perceived lack of capacity. Outpatient cardiac cath pts flow through the ACU for pre/post procedure care. Current schedule limits pts that may be scheduled through the ACU to two OP procedures/day. Cardiologists request the ability to schedule beyond the two procedures/day allowed. Significant variation in pre/postoperative care orders exist amongst cardiologists resulting in variability in length of stay. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between perceived emotional intelligence and the reported use of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression. We also investigated the possible effects of age on the aforementioned variables. The total sample consisted of 379 people (158 men, 220 women, 1 unreported). Across participants, 273 were young (20-39 years old) and 106 were middle-aged (40-65 years old). Objective: Three-dimensional (3D)-printed endovascular models can be an accessible alternative to expensive, state-of-the-art endovascular simulators but currently lack the rigorous validation needed to be dependable educational tools. This study describes the manufacture of a 3D-printed endovascular model of an aorta and determines the construct validity and preliminary content and face validity of the model. Methods: A 3D-printed aorta was created using segmented data from a patient computerized tomography scan and a FormLabs 3B 3D printer with FormLabs Clear resin. PURPOSE: The graduate medical education community implemented virtual residency interviews in response to travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, and this approach has persisted. Although many residency applicants wish to visit in-person prospective training sites, such opportunities could bias programs toward those who are able to meet this financial burden, exacerbating equity concerns. One proposed solution is to offer applicants the opportunity to visit only after a program's rank list is "locked," avoiding favoritism to applicants who visit, but allowing applicants to experience some of the camaraderie, geography, and local effects of an in-person visit. Mini abstracts: Faculty at the Baylor College of Medicine have developed a flexible research collaborative through which students gain research skills and individualized mentorship. This division has produced 86 trainee first author publications, 64 manuscripts by 34 different medical students with an average Scimago Journal Rank of 1.293 (range: 1.035-1.551) since 2015.
