Metallic Implant-Related Osteosarcoma, Frawa Mohsin, Mustafa Bin Ali Zubairi, Kulsoom Fatima, Muhammad Asad Diwan

Department of Radiology

Orthopedic metallic prostheses are commonly used in the current practice of orthopedic surgery. Although, biomaterials used in these implants are generally considered to be biologically inert, there have been consequences of foreign body reactions and potential carcinogenesis. Majority of implant-related malignancies are high grade, and develop in bone or soft tissue around the implant site. No clear association has been identified between the biomaterial implanted and the type of sarcoma. We report the case of a 36-year-old male who underwent intramedullary nailing of femur for mid-shaft fracture secondary to trauma and presented with osteogenic sarcoma of femur 14 months later.

Sentinel Lymph Node Identification Using Contrast Lymphosonography: A Systematic Review, Priscilla Machado, Ji-Bin Liu, Flemming Forsberg Mar 2023

Sentinel Lymph Node Identification Using Contrast Lymphosonography: A Systematic Review, Priscilla Machado, Ji-Bin Liu, Flemming Forsberg

Department of Radiology Faculty Papers

The sentinel lymph node (SLN) concept hypothesizes that metastatic cancer cells will spread through the lymphatic system to the SLN being the first one in the lymphatic chain to receive the metastatic cells, indicating that if the SLN is free of cancer cells the rest of the lymphatic chain is also without metastatic disease. Diagnostic ultrasound imaging (US) has been used to evaluate lymph nodes (LN) to determine level of suspicion and to guide LN biopsies. However, conventional US cannot be used for lymphatic mapping, which requires administration of a tracer. This has been changed with the use of contrast-enhanced …

Cognitive Assessment Of Health-Care Workers Exposed To Ionizing Radiation And The Assessment Of Radiation Safety Awareness In Different Radiation Oncology Hospitals In Egypt, Basma M. Saleh

Theses and Dissertations

The increase in cancer cases and subsequent increase in chemotherapy and radiotherapy sparked worries over hospital workers' health and safety. There is a global trend towards routine assessment of awareness, safety measures, and radiation protection culture among healthcare workers. There is also a trend towards monitoring the various associations between radiation exposure and different health outcomes. In low- and middle-income countries, the use of advanced techniques and biomarker tests to track the health status of the workers is hard to achieve. This is due to the scarce resources and economic instabilities and that is why using a survey as a …

Testicular Choriocarcinoma With Small Bowel Metastasis And Active Gastrointestinal Bleeding, Asad Saulat Fatimi, Khizer Masroor Anns, Faheemullah Khan, Wasim Ahmed Memon, Junaid Iqbal, Muhammad Aman, Izaz Ahmad, Sahar Fatima

Medical College Documents

Testicular choriocarcinomas make up less than 1% of all germ-cell tumors and are highly malignant, attributable to hematogenous spread. While the most common sites of metastasis are the lungs and liver, metastatic spread to the gastrointestinal tract is rare wherein patients may present with GI distress or even an upper GI bleed. In this report, we present a case of known testicular choriocarcinoma in a 40-year-old male who presented to the emergency room with severe anemia and a suspected upper GI bleed.

Locoregional recurrence (LRR) is the predominant pattern of relapse and often the cause of death in patients with retroperitoneal sarcomas (RPS). As a result, reducing LRR is a critical objective for RPS patients. However, unlike soft tissue sarcomas (STS) of the superficial trunk and extremity where the benefits of radiation therapy (RT) are well-established, the role of RT in the retroperitoneum remains controversial. Historically, preoperative or postoperative RT, either alone or in combination with intraoperative radiation (IORT), was commonly justified for RPS based on extrapolation from the superficial trunk and extremity STS literature. However, long-awaited results were recently published from …
