Comparison Between Coated Vs. Uncoated Suture Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion In The Rat As Assessed By Perfusion/Diffusion Weighted Imaging, James Bouley, Marc Fisher, Nils Henninger
Nils Henninger
Differences among models in the temporal evolution of ischemia after middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in rats may considerably influence the results of experimental treatment studies. Using diffusion and perfusion imaging, we compared the spatiotemporal evolution of ischemia in Sprague-Dawley rats after permanent MCAO (pMCAO) with different types of sutures. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to pMCAO produced with either 4-0 silicone coated (n=8), or 3-0 uncoated monofilaments (n=8). Serial determination of quantitative cerebral blood flow (CBF) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps were performed up to 3 h after pMCAO. Lesion volumes were calculated by using previously validated …
Student Evaluations Of Interprofessional Simulation, Rebecca Jensen, Deborah Poling
Student Evaluations Of Interprofessional Simulation, Rebecca Jensen, Deborah Poling
Rebecca S Jensen
Statement of problem While the 2010 report “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health” proposes that nurses work collaboratively with other health care professionals, relatively little has been published on the use of simulation to achieve this goal in nursing and other disciplines. Student ratings of and interprofessional simulation and its effect on collaboration with other disciplines will provide valuable information on ways to improve interprofessional simulations.
Hypotheses
- Students’ self-ratings of confidence for patient care will improve from beginning to end of the simulation.
- Students’ self-rating of collaborative learning will improve from beginning to end of the simulation.
- Students …
Technology Assessment Of Automated Atlas Based Segmentation In Prostate Bed Contouring, Jeremiah Hwee, Alexander Louie, Stewart Gaede, Glenn Bauman, David D'Souza, Tracy Sexton, Michael Lock, Belal Ahmad, George Rodrigues
Technology Assessment Of Automated Atlas Based Segmentation In Prostate Bed Contouring, Jeremiah Hwee, Alexander Louie, Stewart Gaede, Glenn Bauman, David D'Souza, Tracy Sexton, Michael Lock, Belal Ahmad, George Rodrigues
Michael Lock
BACKGROUND: Prostate bed (PB) contouring is time consuming and associated with inter-observer variability. We evaluated an automated atlas-based segmentation (AABS) engine in its potential to reduce contouring time and inter-observer variability.
METHODS: An atlas builder (AB) manually contoured the prostate bed, rectum, left femoral head (LFH), right femoral head (RFH), bladder, and penile bulb of 75 post-prostatectomy cases to create an atlas according to the recent RTOG guidelines. 5 other Radiation Oncologists (RO) and the AABS contoured 5 new cases. A STAPLE contour for each of the 5 patients was generated. All contours were anonymized and sent back to the …
Radiation Dose Distributions In Three Dimensions From Tomographic Optical Density Scanning Of Polymer Gels: Ii. Optical Properties Of The Bang Polymer Gel, Yevgeniya Zastavker, Marek Maryanski, John Gore
Radiation Dose Distributions In Three Dimensions From Tomographic Optical Density Scanning Of Polymer Gels: Ii. Optical Properties Of The Bang Polymer Gel, Yevgeniya Zastavker, Marek Maryanski, John Gore
Yevgeniya V. Zastavker
A newly developed method of radiation dosimetry makes use of the optical properties of polymer gels. The dose-response mechanism relies on the production of light-scattering polymer micro-particles in the gel at each site of radiation absorption. The scattering produces an attenuation of transmitted light intensity that is directly related to the dose and independent of dose rate. For the BANG polymer gel (bis, acrylamide, nitrogen, and gelatin) the shape of the dose-response curve depends on the fraction of the cross-linking monomer in the initial mixture and on the wavelength of light. At 500 nm the attenuation coefficient (μ) increases by …
Mesothelioma - Epidemiology And Management, Patricia Tai, Edward Yu, Avi Assouline, Kurian Joseph
Mesothelioma - Epidemiology And Management, Patricia Tai, Edward Yu, Avi Assouline, Kurian Joseph
Edward Yu
Mesothelioma is an uncommon tumor. It has a latency period of 20-40 years. The most important risk factor is asbestos exposure. Prognosis of mesothelioma is generally poor with high case-fatality rate, and research to improve the outcome of this disease is on-going worldwide. Due to its rarity, management by a multidisciplinary team with experience is recommended. Carefully selected patients may benefit from tri-modality (surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy) treatment. The management of pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma is summarized in this review. Recent advances in chemotherapy and biologic response modifiers are promising.

Lung Cancer Epidemiology – A Global View, Patricia Tai, Edward Yu, Rashmi Koul, Arbind Dubey

Smoking, air pollution and radon exposure are causally related to lung cancer. This review analyzes trends of smoking habits by age, sex and ethnicity and their correlation with incidence and mortality of lung cancer. Unfortunately the use of tobacco by adolescents is on the rise. Most developed countries are still showing the rising trend of mortality in female smokers. In Asia, cigarette smoking has become a major health risk with one in three of all cigarettes in the world today are smoked in China. Estimated one hundred million young ( < 29 years old) Chinese smokers will eventually die from lung …
A Review Of Autoimmune Diseases Associated With Cancer, Patricia Tai, Edward Yu, Kurian Joseph, Thomas Miale
A Review Of Autoimmune Diseases Associated With Cancer, Patricia Tai, Edward Yu, Kurian Joseph, Thomas Miale
Edward Yu
The focus of this review is on the relationships between autoimmune diseases and cancer from two closely related perspectives: 1.Those autoimmune diseases which are often associated with malignancies. 2.Those prevalent cancers which may increase the risks of developing autoimmune disorders. The review concludes with a brief discussion of some selected innovative approaches to cancer immunotherapy.
Systematic Review Of Baseline Low-Dose Ct Lung Cancer Screening., Michael Lock
Systematic Review Of Baseline Low-Dose Ct Lung Cancer Screening., Michael Lock
Michael Lock
The purpose of this systematic review was to provide physicians and patients with a synthesis of the available data and an assessment of the operating characteristics associated with baseline LDCT screening for lung cancer. Various databases, meeting abstracts, clinical trials in progress, and major textbooks for relevant data from 1966 to 2006 were searched for relevant studies. The median value of sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value were 81%, 81%, 8% and 99%, respectively. Of the studies that compared LDCT with other lung cancer screening maneuvers, it was found that LDCT detected a greater number of cancerous …
