Conference Presentation Abstracts

Purpose: To quantitatively investigate the dose perturbations difference between gold and platinum VISICOILTM fiducial markers in proton beam therapy Method: Gold and platinum VISICOILTM fiducial markers with two different dimensions were tested, including 0.35 & 0.5mm in diameter and 5mm in length. Total four kinds of markers. Gafchromic EBT2 was used to measure dose perturbations along the beam path in a ‘‘sandwich’’ setup (Figure 1). Dose perturbation was reported in each depth (0.3mm, 1.65mm, 3.00mm, 5.40mm, 7.80mm, 10.20mm, 12.60mm, 18.15mm). Relative proton stopping power relative to water were calculated through National Institute of Standards and Technology database and SRIM (version …

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Purpose: We proposed an experimental approach to build a precise machine-specific model for standard, volumetric, and layer repainting delivery based on a cyclotron accelerator system. Then, we assessed the interplay effect using a 4D mobile lung target phantom compared to a generic delivery sequence model from West German Proton Therapy Essen (WPE). Methods: The machine delivery log files, from an IBA ProteusPLUSt system, were retrospectively analyzed to quantitatively model energy layer switching time, spot switching time, and spot drill time for standard and volumetric repainting delivery. To quantitatively evaluate the interplay effect, a series of digital thoracic 4DCT image sets …

Structure Sparsity Of The Spot Optimization In Proton Arc Therapy, Lewei Zhao Apr 2021

Structure Sparsity Of The Spot Optimization In Proton Arc Therapy, Lewei Zhao

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Radiation therapy is one of the main cancer treatments that uses radiation to kill cancer cells. Proton therapy, or proton radiotherapy, is a type of particle therapy that uses a beam of protons to irradiate tumor volume. Beaumont proton therapy center research group invented the first robust and delivery-efficient spot-scanning proton arc (SPArc) therapy in 2016. Based on our beam modeling platform, we have found that the spot switching time (SSWT) is proportional to spot numbers. We aim to develop a direct mathematical optimization method to reduce the spot numbers for SPArc based on an independent optimization method to reduce …

Fluoroscopic Demonstration Of Thoracic Tumor Immobilization With High Frequency Percussive Ventilation, Ina M Sala, Beverly Maurer, Cristian Solano, Ronald Levitin, Thomas M Guerrero Dec 2020

Fluoroscopic Demonstration Of Thoracic Tumor Immobilization With High Frequency Percussive Ventilation, Ina M Sala, Beverly Maurer, Cristian Solano, Ronald Levitin, Thomas M Guerrero

Articles

Purpose: The purpose of this first-in-man study is to directly measure thoracic tumor immobilization by high frequency percussive ventilation (HFPV).

Methods: In an IRB approved protocol (IRB # 2017-046) we screened patients with conspicuous lung tumors that exhibited motion >10 mm to undergo kV fluoroscopy with HFPV. Two sets of consecutive AP (anterior posterior) fluoroscopy frames were acquired during multiple breathing cycles for free- and HFPV- breathing. All images were acquired using our kV source/panel of the therapeutic linear accelerator. Percussions were delivered via the intrapulmonary percussive ventilation device (IPV-2C) and phasitron (Percussionaire Corp., Sagle, Idaho). The baseline settings for …

A Reference Data Set For Image Registration Of The Pelvis Using Combinatorial Rigid Registration Optimization (Corro)., Afua A Yorke, David Solis Jr, Thoas Guerrero Nov 2020

A Reference Data Set For Image Registration Of The Pelvis Using Combinatorial Rigid Registration Optimization (Corro)., Afua A Yorke, David Solis Jr, Thoas Guerrero

Articles

Purpose Clinical image pairs provide the most realistic test data for image registration evaluation. However, the optimal registration is unknown. Using combinatorial rigid registration optimization (CORRO) we demonstrate a method to estimate the optimal alignment for rigid-registration of clinical image pairs.

Methods Expert selected landmark pairs were selected for each CT/CBCT image pair for six cases representing head and neck, thoracic, and pelvic anatomic regions. Combination subsets of a k number of landmark pairs (k-combination set) were generated without repeat to form a large set of k-combination sets (k-set) for k = 4,8,12. The rigid transformation between the image pairs …

High Lymph Node Positive To Sampled Ratio As A Potential Indication For Postoperative Radiation Therapy In Patients With Pn2 Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer, Nikhil P Mankuzhy, Muayad F Almahariq, Craig W Stevens, Thomas J Quinn Jan 2020

High Lymph Node Positive To Sampled Ratio As A Potential Indication For Postoperative Radiation Therapy In Patients With Pn2 Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer, Nikhil P Mankuzhy, Muayad F Almahariq, Craig W Stevens, Thomas J Quinn

Articles

Background: The role for postoperative radiation therapy (PORT) for patients with non–small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with mediastinal lymph node (LN) involvement (pN2 disease) is controversial. We performed a SEER analysis comparing surgery alone with PORT among patients with pN2 NSCLC. As we await the final results of the LUNG ART trial, a subset of patients with a high LN positive to sampled (LPR) ratio may benefit from PORT. Patients/methods: Patients with pN2 NSCLC, ranging from 1989-2016, were assessed from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database. A propensity score (PS)-matched, inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) analysis was conducted …
