INTRODUCTION: An estimated 44 million individuals live with Alzheimer's Dementia globally, a number expected to triple by 2050.1 Depression is a commonly observed comorbidity in individuals with Alzheimer's disease. Traditional antidepressant medications often pose challenges due to their side effects and limited efficacy in this population. As a result, alternative therapeutic approaches are being explored, with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) emerging as a promising intervention for treating depression in Alzheimer's patients. TMS is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that utilizes magnetic fields to modulate neural activity in targeted brain regions …

Effects Of Using Different Death Rate Metrics On The Analysis Of Drug-Overdose Death Rates And Socioeconomical Factors, William R. Duan, Dennis J. Hand Nov 2021

Effects Of Using Different Death Rate Metrics On The Analysis Of Drug-Overdose Death Rates And Socioeconomical Factors, William R. Duan, Dennis J. Hand

Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Posters

Age-adjusted death rate (AADR) and raw death rate (RDD) used in drugoverdose studies typically involves death-record data and populationsurvey data. Difference can exist between the two data sources, leading to the so-called dual data-source error. Proportionate mortality avoids the error; however, no studies have been done comparing the conclusions drawn using the different metrics. The objective of this study is to evaluate the differences and merits of using different death-rate metrics in overdose analysis.

Patterns In Change Of Opioid Overdose Death Rate With The Day Of The Week And Their Implications, William R. Duan, Dennis J. Hand

Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Posters

The objective of this study was to investigate the dependencies of opioid overdose death rates on the day of the week and understand the implications of the dependencies Understanding and presenting the dependencies is useful for first responders and for health care system resource planning It can provide additional insights in the opioid epidemic and should be considered in prevention efforts

Initial Evaluation Of A Wellness Game, Bing Parkinson, Bruce St. Amour Jun 2020

Initial Evaluation Of A Wellness Game, Bing Parkinson, Bruce St. Amour

Capital Division Virtual Research Day 2020

Physician wellness has recently been a topic of significant national interest.1-8 The term “wellness” has many definitions, and was best defined by Around et al. 1 as “one’s personal recipe for thriving and not just surviving.” Wellness refers to interconnected dimensions of physical, mental, and social well-being that extend beyond the absence of illness. Wellness has traditionally been measured in the negative sense by assessing rates of burnout, emotional exhaustion, and depersonalization. It is known that physician burnout is at its highest point during residency1, 4, 5 and burnout is linked to many negative outcomes including: substance abuse …

An Atypical Presentation Of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, Rudy Forte, Shiwani Kamath, Debra Angelo, Johnathan Frunzi May 2020

An Atypical Presentation Of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, Rudy Forte, Shiwani Kamath, Debra Angelo, Johnathan Frunzi

West Florida Division Virtual Research Day 2020

Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS) is a rare, but potentially life threatening condition associated with dopamine blockade, particularly first-generation antipsychotics. The complex pathophysiology of NMS remains somewhat unclear and debatable as the symptoms are not fully explained by dopamine blockade alone.1 D2 dopamine receptor antagonism remains responsible for most cases of NMS, however a few cases have been reported in which little to no D2 blockade activity was present.1

This poster is about an atypical presentation of NMS.

New Onset Psychosis Secondary To Neurosyphilis, Samantha Linda Jane Vu, Lauren Angela Demarco, Francis Butler, Nihal Shah

West Florida Division Virtual Research Day 2020

Syphilis is a highly contagious sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the spirochetal bacterium Treponema pallidum. Transmission occurs through direct contact of painless ulcerative lesions, chancres, located on the genitalia (penis, labia) and oral mucosa. Neurosyphilis is any involvement of the central nervous systems (brain, meninges, or spinal cord) by the bacterium.

Obstetrical Providers’ Comfort And Knowledge Of Screening, Brief Intervention, And Referral To Treatment, Dennis J. Hand, Aasta Mehta, Emily Rosenthal, Alice C. Fischer, Tamara Tatevosian, Carrie Malanga, Laura Hart, Debra Dalessandro, Kristin Walker

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Posters

Background

Rates of substance use during pregnancy have continued to rise through 2017. It is likely that obstetrical providers are encountering many pregnant persons who use substances either during prenatal care or postpartum. Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based model that has been successfully implemented in some obstetrical settings, but its implementation has been sporadic. The objective of this study was to determine the baseline level of familiarity and use of SBIRT elements among obstetrical providers to identify needs for future SBIRT implementation efforts.

Methods

Participants were physicians, medical students, nurses, and other staff attending …

Determining A Clinical Role For Digital Apps For Mental Health, Hephsibah Loeb, Md, Ann Chandy, Md May 2019

Determining A Clinical Role For Digital Apps For Mental Health, Hephsibah Loeb, Md, Ann Chandy, Md

Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Posters

In 2017, the FDA approved the first app for treatment of alcohol, cocaine, marijuana and stimulant use disorders. In a preceding randomized controlled trial, mobile software Therapeutic Education System (TES) was found to reduce dropout from treatment and to increase patients’ rates of abstinence from substance abuse. Another study showed that PRIME-D, a mobile-based treatment for depression, positively affected symptoms of depression and disability. Many individuals seek out self-help apps for psychiatric complaints, although, in general, little evidence exists for evaluation of the most accessible mobile apps for self-help. What are the strengths and weaknesses of digital apps for treatment …
