Exploring Adolescent Hearing Aid Usage And Appearance Of Psychiatric Symptoms In Adolescents Using Hearql-28 Surveys, Courtney J. Austin, Dylan Chan

MEDI 9331 Scholarly Activities Clinical Years

Approximately 2% of DHH people in need of mental health services actually receive these services. Among pediatric hearing loss populations, co-occurring cognitive and physical impairments are risk factors for poor mental health status. Due to language barriers and isolation, more children with hearing loss do not have access to mental health services. Cochlear implants have been shown to improve mental health status among the DHH population. Current literature focuses on the mental health status of children with cochlear implants, with little focus on hearing aid users. Using HEAR28 data and surveys, we can quantify the incidence of psychiatric symptoms among …

Bridging The Mind And Body: Functional Neurologic Symptom Disorder Following Sexual Trauma In An Adolescent Girl, Ariel E. Sosa Gomez, Daniel Gutierrez

School of Medicine Publications

Functional neurologic symptom disorder (FNSD) is a multifaceted condition that can present with neurologic symptoms inconsistent with recognized neurological disease, often in the context of psychosocial stressors, though these are not required for diagnosis. We report the case of a 12-year-old Hispanic female who developed episodes of limb paralysis, motor unresponsiveness, and self-injurious behaviors following a history of sexual abuse by a family member. Despite the initial absence of depressive symptoms, the patient later met criteria for major depressive disorder (MDD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Her neurological symptoms lacked identifiable medical findings, following unremarkable results from comprehensive blood work, …

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder And Other Specified Anxiety Disorder In An 8-Year-Old Post-Respiratory Infection: A Case Report, Michael Tran, Alcides Amador, Sofia Camacho Bermudez

Research Colloquium

Background: This case report presents the diagnosis and management of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Other Specified Anxiety Disorders in an 8-year-old male. The importance lies in the development of psychiatric symptoms after multiple respiratory infections and the subsequent diagnosis of Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS). It highlights a potential connection between infections and psychiatric manifestations in pediatric patients. PANDAS is an immune-mediated neuropsychiatric disorder that occurs after a Group A Strep (GAS) infection, characterized by the sudden onset or worsening of obsessive-compulsive disorder and tic disorder. While pathophysiology is not fully understood, evidence indicates that …

Comparing The Trends Of Postpartum Depression Screening Scores During And Before The Covid-19 Pandemic, Elif S. Duran, Dung Dang, Tony Ogburn

Research Colloquium

Introduction: Postpartum depression includes major and minor depressive disorder affecting women in the time period after childbirth. The studies reviewed in our literature found that the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the risk of postpartum depression for women. Our study location, the Rio Grande Valley is one of the hardest hit locations by the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. Our patient population is also one with the higher risk factors for postpartum depression. As such, we are expecting the psychological impact of the pandemic to be even more magnified and thus, actions need to be taken to support the vulnerable …

Assessing Influence Of Immigrant Status And Other Social Determinants Of Health On Community Psychiatry, Agnes M. Cruz, Jorge A. Romero Ortiz, Diana Chapa

Research Symposium

Background/purpose: Social determinants of health are fundamental and structural factors that affect people’s lives and impact their health and longevity. Differences in social determinants of health across populations and communities account for major health disparities between them. The purpose of this paper is to assess how social determinants of health have impacted the health outcomes in patients from our community psychiatry clinics, to evaluate the impact of irregular immigration status as an independent social determinant of health, and to investigate the use of SDOH screening instrument in our clinics.

Methods: An online questionnaire was sent to community psychiatry providers in …

Representation Of Racial And Ethnic Minorities And Their Preferences For Mood Stabilizing Treatment Selection For Bipolar Disorder: A Systematic Review, Francisco J. Barrera, Manuel Gardea, Juan Garzon, Ryan Toledo, Ana Paula Bonner, Andrea Maraboto, Mark Frye, Ihsan Salloum

Research Symposium

Background: The use of second-generation antipsychotics for bipolar disorder (BD) has increased in the past years1Concerns on potential serious medical side effects and need for blood level monitoring of some traditional mood stabilizers along with other factors have influenced this change. Shared decision-making (SDM) strategies have been implemented in clinical settings due to their ability to engage patients in the process of treatment selection.2 Within minority groups with mental illnesses, socioeconomic factors, individual concerns, and cultural variations in clinical presentations, are often overlooked or misrepresented when assessing the patient’s treatment preferences. Although several studies evaluating the …

Research Symposium

Objective/Hypothesis: Bipolar disorder (BD) has the highest association with alcohol and other substance use disorders compared to other major psychiatric disorders. This patient population is particularly challenging to treat. We have previously shown that some patients with co-occurring alcohol use and bipolar disorders respond to the GABAergic agonist valproate (VPA), which is known to modulates the dopaminergic system, and also as an epigenetic modifier. Predictors of therapeutic response to VPA in patients with AUD/BD are not known, and the subgroup which would benefit from VPA is still to be identified. Recent evidence suggests that AUD promotes a pro-inflammatory state while …

Depression and neurocognitive disorder continue to be the major neuropsychiatric disorders affecting persons with HIV (PWH). The prevalence of major depressive disorder is two to fourfold higher among PWH than the general population (∼6.7%). Prevalence estimates of neurocognitive disorder among PWH range from 25 to over 47% – depending upon the definition used (which is currently evolving), the size of the test battery employed, and the demographic and HIV disease characteristics of the participants included, such as age range and sex distribution. Both major depressive disorder and neurocognitive disorder also result in substantial morbidity and premature mortality. However, though anticipated …

Cardiometabolic disorders have known inflammatory implications, and peripheral measures of inflammation and cardiometabolic disorders are common in persons with psychotic disorders. Inflammatory signatures are also related to neurobiological and behavioral changes in psychosis. Relationships between systemic inflammation and cardiometabolic genetic risk in persons with psychosis have not been examined. Thirteen peripheral inflammatory markers and genome-wide genotyping were assessed in 122 participants (n = 86 psychosis, n = 36 healthy controls) of European ancestry. Cluster analyses of inflammatory markers classified higher and lower inflammation subgroups. Single-trait genetic risk scores (GRS) were constructed for each participant using previously reported GWAS summary statistics …

An opportunity has opened for research into primary prevention of psychotic disorders, based on progress in endophenotypes, genetics, and genomics. Primary prevention requires reliable prediction of susceptibility before any symptoms are present. We studied a battery of measures where published data supports abnormalities of these measurements prior to appearance of initial psychosis symptoms. These neurobiological and behavioral measurements included cognition, eye movement tracking, Event Related Potentials, and polygenic risk scores. They generated an acceptably precise separation of healthy controls from outpatients with a psychotic disorder.

Methods

The Bipolar and Schizophrenia Network on Intermediate Phenotypes (B-SNIP) measured this battery …

Schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BP) are complex genetic disorders. Their appearance is also likely informed by as yet only partially described epigenetic contributions. Using a sequencing-based method for genome-wide analysis, we quantitatively compared the blood DNA methylation landscapes in SZ and BP subjects to control, both in an understudied population, Hispanics along the US-Mexico border. Remarkably, we identified thousands of differentially methylated regions for SZ and BP preferentially located in promoters 3'-UTRs and 5'-UTRs of genes. Distinct patterns of aberrant methylation of promoter sequences were located surrounding transcription start sites. In these instances, aberrant methylation occurred in CpG islands …
