Background: The Jackson-Pratt (JP) drain is a closed suction drain used in surgeries throughout the body. This prevents seroma formation through continual negative pressure drainage while resisting collapse and obstruction. JP drains are mainstays in breast reconstruction and mastectomy.
Methods: Through a literature review using keywords such as “Surgical Site Infection” (SSI), “Quality of Life” (QOL), and “Surgical Site Pain” (SSP), we summarized JP drain-related complications in breast reconstruction and mastectomy. Although the drain effectively reduces seroma formation, there has been a lack of innovation in addressing these issues. There is no standardized approach to JP drain post-operative care or …

Purpose
The JP drain is a closed suction drain used in surgeries throughout the body. This design, introduced by Dr. Frederick Jackson and Dr. Richard Pratt in 1971, prevents seroma formation through continual negative pressure drainage while resisting drain collapse and obstruction. Through a focused literature review, we summarized findings on JP drain-related complications in breast reconstruction and mastectomy. Though the JP drain effectively reduces seroma formation, there has been a profound lack of innovation in how its design addresses Surgical Site Infection (SSI), Surgical Site Pain (SSP), and Quality of Life (QOL). In addition, there is no standardized, evidence-based …

Medical Student Research Symposium
Purpose: Increasing use of prepectoral plane in post mastectomy implant-based reconstruction has made immediate direct to implant (DTI) reconstruction more achievable. There has been increased incidence of post mastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT) making it important to understand the complication profile of immediate DTI reconstruction in patients who may require adjuvant radiation therapy.
Methods: A retrospective cohort study of consecutive patients undergoing prepectoral DTI reconstruction with and without PMRT was performed. Patient and treatment level factors, operative, and post-operative outcomes were extracted on both the patient and breast level for the prepectoral radiated and nonradiated patients. The presence of at least …

Purpose: Despite federally mandated insurance coverage and clear benefits of breast reconstruction after mastectomy, reported rates remain low at 23-63%. We hypothesize that rates and types of reconstruction would be disproportionately lower in the rural state of Nevada. The goal of this study was to identify and understand disparities in breast reconstruction utilization in Nevada compared to the nation. Methods: Breast cancer patient information (2008-2013) was aggregated from AHRQ’s HCUP Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) and the Nevada State Inpatient Database (NV SID). Chi-square analysis for two population proportions was used to determine differences between the NV SID (n=7,466) and NIS …
