Association Of Perioperative Steroid Use With Recovery Rate And Postoperative Infection Risk In Spinal Cord Injury, Nathan Zou, Athikur Rahman, Brian Lynch Jan 2026

Association Of Perioperative Steroid Use With Recovery Rate And Postoperative Infection Risk In Spinal Cord Injury, Nathan Zou, Athikur Rahman, Brian Lynch

Stony Brook Orthopaedic and Musculoskeletal Journal

Background: The purpose of this study is to compare recovery and infection outcomes between teenagers and adults who undergo surgery for traumatic spine injuries and the effect of steroid administration. Steroids are often used in traumatic spine injuries to help recovery, however there is a concern that steroid use could increase the risk of infection due to the suppression of the immune system. We examined the impact of postoperative steroid use on recovery rates and infection rates in both age groups.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using the TriNetX Research Network, which includes data from over 100 healthcare …

Synthetic Electrospun Fiber Matrix In The Management Of Acute Wounds Following Excision Of Hidradenitis Suppurativa Lesions: A Prospective Pilot Study, Michael Madueke, Frank Lau Sep 2025

Synthetic Electrospun Fiber Matrix In The Management Of Acute Wounds Following Excision Of Hidradenitis Suppurativa Lesions: A Prospective Pilot Study, Michael Madueke, Frank Lau

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Hurley Stage II or III hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) may necessitate surgical excision of diseased skin and subcutaneous fat for symptom control and disease management. These excisions result in open wounds in topographically challenging regions and typically cannot be primarily closed. This study evaluates the use of a synthetic electrospun fiber matrix (SEFM) as a post-resection regeneration template to accelerate re-granulation and improve subsequent skin graft incorporation. This prospective pilot study enrolled Hurley Stage II or III patients undergoing surgical resection of HS lesions. SEFM was applied to the resulting wounds in conjunction with negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT). Patients were …

Reconstruction Of Sternoclavicular Defect With Completely Detached Pectoralis Major Flap, Jude Opoku-Agyeman, Sergio Perez, Amir Behnam, David Matera Apr 2019

Reconstruction Of Sternoclavicular Defect With Completely Detached Pectoralis Major Flap, Jude Opoku-Agyeman, Sergio Perez, Amir Behnam, David Matera

Plastic Surgery Resident Research

Sternoclavicular joint infection is very rare. Osteomyelitis is a known complication of septic sternoclavicular joint. Once this condition is diagnosed, aggressive management including antibiotic and surgical debridement is warranted. Patients are often left with sizeable sternoclavicular defects that may need surgical reconstruction. In this report, we describe the use of a completely detached pectoralis major flap for the reconstruction of a large sternoclavicular defect after resection for osteomyelitis. Briefly, after the debridement of the infected sternoclavicular joint, the pectoralis major was detached from its sternoclavicular attachments and further detached from the humeral attachments rendering it completely detached on a vascular …

Necrotizing Fasciitis Of The Neck: Case Presentation, Emil Marginean, Ciprian Venter, Maria Domuta, Oana Valenas, Ildiko Sorban, Alina Pantis, Bogdan Popescu, Razvan V. Scăunașu Oct 2017

Necrotizing Fasciitis Of The Neck: Case Presentation, Emil Marginean, Ciprian Venter, Maria Domuta, Oana Valenas, Ildiko Sorban, Alina Pantis, Bogdan Popescu, Razvan V. Scăunașu

Necrotizing fasciitis represents a severe and rare infectious disease, which is accompanied by extended necrosis of subcutaneous tissues and fascia layers, having as a result gangrene of the teguments. To reduce mortality associated with this disease, a rapid diagnosis is necessary as well as aggressive surgical treatment, accompanied by adequate, aggressive antibiotic therapy. As a rule, etiology is teeth related, with the condition more common in immunology-depressed patients. This article presents the experience of the authors regarding a case presentation of necrotizing fasciitis with typical clinical expression and management of the disease in an immunological-depressed patient. Further data on diagnosis, …
