Is There An Association Between Placental Inflammatory Lesions And Vaginal Microbiota In Preterm Labour? A Case Control Study, David Ogechi Atandi
Master of Medicine in Anatomic Pathology
Background: Preterm birth continues to be a significant contributor to neonatal mortality and morbidity despite diverse unique interventional strategies. There is need for better understanding of differences and influences of the now characterized vaginal microbiome on terminal inflammatory effects in the uterine microenvironment in term and preterm labour to improve on current strategies. How the existence of a postulated placenta microbiome also affects this understanding should be considered. Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore the association between the maternal vaginal microbiota and placental inflammatory lesions in preterm labour and to determine the presence of a placenta microbiome …
The Predictive Value Of Urine Dipstick Glucose Test In The Screening For Gestational Diabetes Mellitus In A Tertiary Private Hospital In Kenya, Janet Maranga
Master of Medicine in Clinical Pathology
Background: Worldwide, there is no consensus on the best approach to diagnose gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and though oral glucose tolerance testing (OGTT) is considered the gold standard, practices in the administration and interpretation of the test differ depending on the guidelines in use. Previous studies have questioned the utility of glycosuria as a screening test for GDM. Since the studies were conducted, there have been diagnostic threshold changes that might impact its utility. Justification: Diagnostic cut-offs of OGTT used in GDM diagnosis have evolved over time necessitating re-evaluation of glycosuria. The study was aimed at re-assessing the utility of …

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious threat to global public health, but obtaining representative data on AMR for healthy human populations is difficult. Here, we use metagenomic analysis of untreated sewage to characterize the bacterial resistome from 79 sites in 60 countries. We find systematic differences in abundance and diversity of AMR genes between Europe/North-America/Oceania and Africa/Asia/South-America. Antimicrobial use data and bacterial taxonomy only explains a minor part of the AMR variation that we observe. We find no evidence for cross-selection between antimicrobial classes, or for effect of air travel between sites. However, AMR gene abundance strongly correlates with socio-economic, …
